after judiciously trimming the end, Topher selects the best location for the eye bolt that will make attachment for the cable that will distribute loads on this branch in extreme conditions...
Sometimes, that is SOMETIMES, you can keep ahead of the acceleration of the tree without a pulling machine by putting a weight in the pull line. Extreme care must be taken!!! In the pic, from last winter, I felt I could NOT trust the hinge wood in a failing poplar to a narrow DZ. So, I limbed it up 60'; put in an open face & bore cut; rigged & tensioned a heavy round mid-line; then tripped the back strap. It kept tension in the redirected pull line until the round hit the ground ... went dead to the intended lay.
Again, it's not to be taken lightly but it's a useful trick, for special cases, sometimes.
Part of the cleanup is to take care of future problems. We had three trees removed that were leaning toward structures. Another storm like Irma may cause them to fall.

As I came down clearing any hangers, i found myself where all these thick leads converged, found my co-worker and asked him to grab my camera. The tree is very thick at this level. what an honor to be in her center.
