You can see through the photos the huge difference they have made! This totals over 3 miles of stream and a road that are now completely trash free!!! Die Stadt Friedrichstadt (dänisch Frederiksstad, friesisch: Fräärstää, plattdeutsch: Friesstadt, Frieestadt, niederländisch Frederikstad aan de Eider) liegt zwischen den Flüssen Eider und Treene im Kreis Nordfriesland in Schleswig-Holstein. Der Luftkurort bildet mit dem Amt Nordsee-Treene eine Verwaltungsgemeinschaft, das Amt führt die Geschäfte der Stadt.
Friedrichstadt wurde 1621 durch den gottorfschen Herzog Friedrich III. gegründet und ist heute ein hochrangiges Kulturdenkmal. Herzog Friedrich III. zielte auf die Errichtung einer Handelsmetropole und holte dazu niederländische Bürger, besonders die verfolgten Remonstranten, an den Ort und gewährte ihnen Religionsfreiheit. Infolge dieser Maßnahme siedelten sich auch Mitglieder vieler anderer Religionsgemeinschaften in Friedrichstadt an, so dass der Ort als „Stadt der Toleranz“ galt. Heute sind noch fünf Religionsgemeinschaften aktiv.
Die Bauten der niederländischen Backsteinrenaissance und Grachten prägen das Stadtbild des heute vor allem vom Tourismus lebenden „Holländerstädtchens“ mit knapp 2.500 Einwohnern.
Friedrichstadt liegt in der Eider-Treene-Niederung an der Mündung des Nebenflusses Treene in die Eider. Bewohnbar wurde die in der Marsch gelegene Fläche erst 1573, nachdem Adolf von Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorf hier die Treene hatte durchdämmen lassen, so dass sie ihrem ursprünglichen Bett nicht mehr folgen konnte. Unter der Stadt befinden sich anderthalb Meter aufgeschütteter Kleiboden, der auf tieferen Klei- und Moorschichten ruht.
Eine Schleuse trennt Friedrichstadt von der Eider. Die von der Nordsee kommenden Gezeiten verursachten bis 1973, dem Jahr der Einweihung des Eidersperrwerkes, im Fluss noch einen durchschnittlichen Tidenhub von 2,1 Meter. Vor einem Ansteigen des Wasserstandes durch Gezeitenströme oder durch Sturmfluten ist die Stadt somit doppelt geschützt.
Zwei Sielzüge mit drei, ursprünglich vier, Sielen verbinden die Treene mit der Eider und entwässern das Gebiet um den Zusammenfluss. Die Stadt liegt daher auf einer künstlichen Insel. Im Süden begrenzt die Eider das Stadtgebiet, im Norden die Treene. Die Ost- und Westgrenze werden jeweils durch den Oster- und Westersielzug gebildet. Durch die Innenstadt selbst fließen zwei Kanäle, die die Sielzüge miteinander verbinden: der Mittelburggraben und der Fürstenburggraben.
Der Westersielzug ist mit etwa 30 Metern Breite und vier bis fünf Metern Wassertiefe der größere der beiden Hauptkanäle, während der Ostersielzug im Schnitt nur etwa zehn Meter breit und zwei bis drei Meter tief ist. Die Kanäle in der Stadt sind deutlich kleiner. Die Strömungsverhältnisse unterscheiden sich stark, je nachdem ob die Schleuse zur Eider hin offen oder geschlossen ist. Während die Kanäle bei geschlossenen Toren beinahe stehende Gewässer sind, können sich bei offenem Wasser starke Strömungen entwickeln.
Die Bäume der Stadt bieten Lebensraum für zahlreiche Dohlen, die Wasserarme für unzählige Stockenten, deren Fütterung angesichts der Überpopulation mittlerweile verboten wurde.

Thank you! Thank You! THANK YOU! Our incredible volunteers cleaned from Merritt Boulevard to North Point Boulevard and included North Point Road today (4/6)! Over 170 volunteers arrived at Bread and Cheese Creek to clean the Willow Road Section of the stream, but they quickly met and exceeded this goal and cleaned up the section of North Point Road between North Point Plaza (Wal-Mart’s Shopping Center) and German Hill Road. As if this wasn’t incredible enough the continued cleaning in the stream until they reached North Point Boulevard! However, this still was not the end volunteers moved in the opposite direction cleaning up to Merritt Boulevard including the trash choked shore next to Merritt Manor shopping center! You can see through the photos the huge difference they have made! This totals over 3 miles of stream and a road that are now completely trash free!!! We have said it before and we will say it again No-one can match our incredible volunteers! Thank you so much for your incredible and monumental effort! Today we removed over 3.5 tons of trash (227 trash bags!), over 2 tons of metal that has been recycled, 23 shopping carts, 14 tires (one a huge tractor tire), 2 bicycles, 2 lawnmowers, a portable black and white TV, a section of wrought iron fence, an elliptical machine, and more! Our motto is “Together can make a Difference” and thanks to our volunteers, we are! Today was our must successful cleanup EVER thank you YOU!
We would also like to thank Gold's Gym Dundalk, Gotügo Portable Restrooms, The Caddy Shack, The Boulevard Diner, The Lions Club, Bob Long, & Entenmann's Bakery Outlet for all their donation of food and supplies to help make today so successful!
