Fair Oaks Avenue is lighter on oaks than the name might suggest, but in the last four years, the roughy half-mile stretch near my house between two main streets, has lost a frightening number of big street-side and front yard trees. An incense cedar the same size as this one fell in November 2011. Four massive deodars have been removed by house flippers -- Altadena does not see fit to protect it's official tree. A large elm, two large boxelders, a massive old magnolia, and beautiful old white alder have also gone. Add in many removals of backyard trees, including a gorgeous old mulberry, and the canopy has become alarmingly gap-toothed with no succession planting in place or planned. Perhaps most alarming, awareness of tree care in drought not what it needs to be. To help guide homeowners, the Urban Forest Council produced a useful tree care brochure: rcrcd.org/Publications/TreeCare.pdf
