One of the last engines to leave the scrapyard, this was a very familiar engine to Northampton transpotters. She spent many years at Willesden before heading for Barry, where I photographed her in June 1986.

You've got to be a mad trackbasher or transpotter to decide in the morning that today you will drive a 420 mile round trip to ride 27 miles on a steam hauled train. After travelling 223.5 miles there is not a lot to see on a foggy afternoon at this trainspotters' holy grail called "Cauldon Lowe"
Stanier 8F locomotive 8624 had banked the six coach train up the one in forty gradient from Leekbrook Junction to Ipstones Summit (1,063 feet AMSL) on the outward journey to Cauldon Lowe and would now work back tender first taking the train to Kingsley and Froghall.
You've got to be a mad transpotter to decide when you wake in the morning that today you will drive a 420 miles round trip to ride a 27 miles round trip on a steam hauled train. At the furthest point of the train ride there is not a lot to see at the aggregates loading site at Cauldon Lowe. In the distance steam rises from 8P Pacific class locomotive 71000 Duke of Gloucester which has brought the train up from Kingsley and Froghall.
