Tramontane: a northern, or cold, wind.

Coup de vent sur le Cap Cerbère. France 2021.

Just another day in November down here in the very South of France.

This day of the year we often have some wind from the Tramontane also whipping the sea as here right outside of the harbour in Collioure and the little chapel St. Vincent.

From the net:

The tramontane in France is a strong, dry cold wind from the northwest (in lower Languedoc, Roussillon, Catalonia and the Balearic Islands). It is similar to the mistral in its causes and effects, but it follows a different corridor; the tramontane accelerates as it passes between the Pyrenees and the Massif Central, (WIKI)

St. Vincent Chapel. Located on a former island where, according to legend, Saint Vincent suffered martyrdom in 303.

The chapel was built in 1701 for the arrival of new relics of the saint.

At that time, hermits and religious retired in remote locations were accessed through the population who had regularly searched for advice from them.

Architecturally, the chapel is very small. This is a simple rectangular piece with an arcuate portal .

A large wooden cross bearing a martyr Christ can be seen behind, facing the sea

When visiting le Massif de la Clape,France, we discovered a lovely medieval festival.

Actually we wanted to hike along some wonderful places there, but the hiking trails have been closed and strongly protected due to fire risk a few days before we arrived...Furthermore, Le Tramontane. - a strong, cold and dry north wind- was blowing

constantly for several days.

By the way: In 2014, the French parliament passed a law reducing the number of metropolitan regions from 22 to 13.

Effective 1 January 2016.

A bit confusing.

Not only for putting new images in my existing albums...

Flickr-map still shows the former regions.

In two days of observation in the Camargue, it is the only species that I have photographed. The Tramontane (wind) being so strong, that no bird ventured on the ground.

Rather than sea mist, the haze on the horizon is due to water lifted from the crests of waves by gale force wind. France has over 200km of coast with a false interior line - the beach above is on an etang which is a shallow fresh water lake that is in a slightly salty dialogue with the sea. The gift during the ages of prehistory would have been that simple boats could fish even on days when the sea's waves were too energetic. The shallow areas would also be of interest for the production of salt and collection of shellfish, eggs and birds. The areas are also very productive for reeds that could have been employed for building and maybe music and clothing.

Jour de grande Tramontane.

Because of the tramontane (a strong cold northern wind) the air was too clear and the sun was too bright for a "classical" sunset photo. But, nevertheless, walking along this little road in Tuscany, I could not resist to give it a try, and I got this nice lens flare effect. Also, I could not resist to play a little with Photoshop's liquify filter.

Cadaqués (Catalan pronunciation: [kəðəˈkes]) is a town in the Alt Empordà comarca, in province of Girona, Catalonia, Spain. It is on a bay near the Cap de Creus peninsula, on the Costa Brava of the Mediterranean. It is only a two-and-a-half hour drive from Barcelona, and thus it is very accessible and not only attracts tourists but people who want a second home for weekends and summers. In 2002, Cadaqués had an official population of 2,612, but up to ten times as many people can live in the town during the peak of the summer tourism season.

Cadaqués has a special place in art history. Commanding charcoals, by local artist Mei Fren, of the 19th century Cadaqués beleaguered by a winter Tramontane, can be seen at the Cadaqués museum. Fren was the first modern artist to live in Cadaqués and gave the town many of his works and a marble top table on which he sketched many of its turn-of-the-century fishermen.

Salvador Dalí often visited Cadaqués in his childhood, and later kept a home in Port Lligat, a small village on a bay next to the town. A summer holiday here in 1916, spent with the family of Ramon Pichot is seen as especially important to Dalí's artistic career. Other notable artists, including Pablo Picasso, Joan Miró, Marcel Duchamp, Antoni Pitxot, Henri-François Rey, Melina Mercouri and Maurice Boitel also spent time here. Cadaqués is mentioned in the story Tramontana by Gabriel García Márquez.

The interesting submarine life of this sleepy fishing village was studied for several years by phycologist Françoise Ardré, long before Cadaqués was discovered and transformed into a tourism destination. On Mondays there is a travelling market in Cadaqués, located near the parking lot. This market has a wide variety of products.
