Engine 1095, also known as ‘The Spirit of Sir John A.' has provided a favourite photo op for tourists visiting Confederation Park for more than 40 years.
It is a reminder that Confederation Park was once an active train yard, that the Visitor Information Centre was once the K&P Railway station and that Kingston was once home to the Canadian Locomotive Company for over 100 years. That company built more than 3,000 steam, electric and diesel engines for the Canadian Pacific Railway, including ‘The Spirit of Sir John A.'. 238

There's a lot wrong with this picture, as it was taken out of a window, hence all the splodges! And I've hesitated to post it for those reasons. But I love it because it showcases a place that had such an influence on me. I lived and worked in Melbourne in the late 70's and early 80's when it bore no resemblence to the city it is today. Flinders St Station was a nightmare to be endured on the daily commute to work ... Southbank didn't exist ... well it did but it was ugly trainyards and docklands. I left as soon as could, and kept away for several decades other than to visit friends and family. I now marvel at the city planners' vision that has transformed Melbourne into the truly world class city it is today. This view is from a high rise in William St ... you can see the wonderful Byzantine architecture of Flinders St Station, the multitude of bridges across the Yarra, Southbank in all its glory, the screens in the incredible Fed Square and the lights illuminating the hailed and iconic MCG. It's a cacphony of colour and action that is possibly irritating, but it reflects the energy and beauty of Melbourne and reminds me of where I've been and how grateful I am to have seen the evolution of this beautiful city.

CN #2001 takes the final stretch to Proctor Yard with a loaded pellet train. These loads will be taken down the mountain to prep the dock for the next Great Lakes freighter later in the day.
This is the abandoned part of Istvántelki trainyard (otherwise known as the “Red Star Train Graveyard” in the Internet), which is now a cemetery and officially not accessable because of risk of collapse of the buildings.
MÁV Class 301 engines were, it is said, considered to be Hungary's "most beautiful" steam engines. 301.016 is the only fully intact surviving member of the class and is displayed in the near museum. 301.006 is the second survivor and still exists as you can see here, but it was cannibalised in order to restore 301.016.
Overnight stay It's time to head back on the road, this time to Montreal. CP 40B departs Toronto Yard, a once busy hump yard, reduced to now flat switching traffic.

Roaming around the trainyard in Milpitas, shooting graffiti. Mostly, it's just crap vandalism, but once in a while...I'm not saying it's good, or even that I like it. Just saying it caught my eye.
We took a starlight train ride through the desert around Ely, Nevada, and after the wonderful trip, an employee from Nevada Northern Railway Museum saw me with my camera and tripod. He said I was more than welcome to photograph the trainyard at night. I think I got some really cool images. I can't recommend you going to the museum enough.

As a yard trimmer with SOO 4448 in the lead waits on standby, CP 475 comes up the side with UP 6310 (SP Patch) on the point, coming into the Nahant Yard to start working.
Sometime a few decades ago, it might've been a rather normal sight to see SOO and Southern Pacific in the Nahant Yard, especially with the SP detours on the river line.
Definitely the money shot of the chase!
