Late afternoon leaf-peeping led me to South Lake on the edge of the John Muir Wilderness in the Eastern Sierras.

As the sun was starting to play hide and seek with the clouds, I decided that hiking further onto the Bishops Pass Trail was probably not going to yield much, so I loitered around the trailhead looking for interesting compositions. I like how this wide angle, including Hurd Peak worked out from this vantage.

With several years of la Niña plaguing Southern California, South Lake is extremely low. The cafe and pontoon boat proprietor at Sabrina Lake told me they haven't been able to put boats in South Lake for three years, and this coming winter looks like another dry one. These clouds, despite being a nuisance for photography produced no rain.

Steens Mountain, located in southeastern Oregon, is the largest fault block mountain in the Great Basin. Eons ago, enormous pressure under the earth’s crust pushed up one side of an existing fault line, creating the jagged east face of Steens Mountain, which towers nearly a mile above the Alvord Desert below. On the west side, Steens Mountain slopes down more gradually. Over time, the western side was carved by glaciers that created the Big Indian, Little Blitzen, Kiger, and Wildhorse gorges. (Taken from Northwest Horse Trails)

The mountain was once known as a sacred place by Native Americans who lived on its slopes. Later, the area became known as Steen’s Mountain, named after the Army Cavalry Major, who defeated and removed the Native American population from the mountain during the Snake Indian Wars. Today, in recognition that no man can own such a place, the name dropped the ownership apostrophe and became Steens Mountain.

This shot was taken from the loop road at approximately 9500 feet. All that brilliant yellow you are seeing are Aspens stands. We took the Steens Mountain Road from French Glen up to Steens summit trailhead where you can find Wildhorse Lake.

This is the trailhead for trails at Stony Creek Metropark, Michigan. The shortest trail, about a mile long, is a pleasant walk in the woods; the longest trail, about three miles of rolling landscape, goes through deep woods, meadow, and grassland, featuring the effects of Ice-Age glacier activity in the formation of the landscape.

by the time we drove up to the Glen Allen Trailhead above Anchorage. But it was perfect the way it was hitting the mountain tops. It was extremely cold though. We didn't stay long

These trails into the Florida Everglades are a great gathering point for locals who like to watch an unimpeded sunset, often drawing a hundred people or more for evening strolls. Check my map for the exact location.

Early morning during the golden hour above the Reflection Canyon Trailhead illustrating the breath of the upcoming hike I would undertake and the notable Navajo Mountain in the far ground at the end of the 50 Mile ridgeline, which is the end of the right ridgeline in the slick rock area beyond the first grouping of slick rock. Individuals wishing to undertake the hard hike should check out the trail information on AllTrails.

So I went down a bit further and found this beautiful trail. As I walked by the people that were walking back up, all of them were huffing and puffing. It was a bit tiring for sure, but it was all worth it!

The people you see down below looked like little ants in one of those ant hill 😁.

Have a great Wednesday my friends!

(This image is half of the story, read below to know the full).

All storytellers agreed on this legend. Millions of years ago, the forest got infected with myriads of mosquitoes. So many that the Forest got alarmed and sent a message through the ground and air, which went as far as the other side of the world. A magnificent and powerful creature called the Dragon was sleeping there but woke up at sensing the message. Then he flew non-stop 8,000 miles over the ocean, and when he entered the Forest, he devoured all the mosquitoes. When he finished, he looked for a tall grass in a clearing by the forest and rested. While resting decided to make the forest his new home forever.

From the trailhead of a wildflower trail (my previous post), Gothic Mountain is to the left, Crested Butte is in the distance (center) and Whetstone Mountain is in the distance to the right. All three mountains are between 12,000 and 13,000 feet.

The town of Crested Butte has proclaimed itself the wildflower capital of Colorado, and celebrates with an annual wildflower festival.

It takes at least a few hours to hike all the way up to the top of Big Daddy. Start early lest you melt into the sand.

Taken from the terrace of Yari Hut. What you see here is the trailhead to Mt Ohbami (right there on the left) to Mt Nakadake to Mt Minamidake to Daikiretto (knife-ridge) to Mt Kitaho (its peak barely visible across from here). Faraway under the cloud are Mt East Tensho (right) and Mt Otensho (left). Across them is Mt Tsubakuro. They offer the nicest ridge walk in southern part of the Northern Japanese Alps Mountains, Ime.

The red flower is called Indian Paintbrush.

I Was Back to My Start Point! A setting looking to the southeast while taking in views across white sands and dune formations present along the Alkali Flat Trail in White Sands National Park. My other thought in composing this image was to capture that look of the parking area along the Dunes Drive where I had started my hike several hours prior. It was definitely good to see that area after the long hike!

According to local legend, this geologic feature received its name because an early settler considered it "a hell of a place to lose a cow."

The Arizona landscape is so unique

This is the trailhead for one of the many hikes in Muir Woods. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough time and the ground was extremely muddy so I wasn't able to follow this trail but I want to return some day and check it out!

ABOUT THIS SERIES

I'd been to Muir Woods several times in my childhood but the last time I was there I can't recall. I was inspired to return after watching the Ken Burns series The National Parks: America's Best Idea on PBS.

Muir Woods, is the nation's sixth national monument but the first that was created from private land (the land was donated by William Kent). The woods are home to Coast Redwood trees (Sequoia sempervirens) which can grow to over 370 feet tall and 26 feet in diameter.

I think Muir Woods is one of the most beautiful places on Earth. If you're ever in the San Francisco Bay Area, I highly encourage you to visit it. You won't be disappointed.

we didn't go out for a hike the last few weekends, we had other plans and also do to some maintenance in our backyard.

So this time a few photos from a hike a few weeks ago.

We had a weekend with some nice and warm weather, decided to visit a nature reserve close to home.

Visited Balloërveld and followed one of the available trails.

Used the Canon Eos 1V again, have decided to use the Eos 1V more often and give our Canon Eos 3 bodies some rest and TLC

The 1v was loaded with some (Ilford) Kentmere Pan 100 and used it at EI 200 (ISO)

Developing is as always done with our caffenol recipe, Caffenol-C-L at 22c and stand developing for 55 minutes this time.

Fun exploring all the wonderful trails in Colorado. This one is really beautiful for it's various views of canyons and vistas.

A very overcast day heading out to Point Reyes Lighthouse

This is a hill just North West of the gate at the end of the road on the White Mountain Range. This is where the trailhead to White Mountain Peak begins.

White Mountain Peak, located northeast of the city of Bishop, Ca. is the third highest peak in California and the highest outside of the Sierra Nevada. From the gate it is a seven mile hike to the summit.

Plus, I got some stills like this one.
