Ryanair B737-800 on a downwind to Dublin Airport after a go-around....don't get too many things for "free" on this airline!!!
My favorite sound in the entire world (as of this point in my experiences) is the sound of snow crunching underfoot as you walk through it. This is because of two reasons:
1) It is snowing, and I love snow.
2) In order to hear this crunching, it has to be quiet and whenever it snows, things get really quiet. It does not matter if it is out in the Gorge or in the middle of downtown. Snowy mornings are almost always quiet mornings.
This was the case this morning a few years back. Though there were ample signs of life continuing on in the foot prints and tire treads cutting through the snow, I saw nary another soul in this hour or so I wandered downtown. Eventually I found myself on top of a parking garage, which seems to happen with alarming regularity since I got into photography. I liked the pattern in the tire marks as they cut through the intersection and got this shot with my Nikon FM2. Actually I really really like the flow of travel amongst all the trails left by both pedestrians and motorists. It is interesting to see where people turned, where they swerved, etc. Maybe that is just me.
I have few qualms about living in Portland. It rains a lot. The city is green. It is close to the mountains, the gorge and the beach. The people are ... interesting. What is not to love? Well the fact that we get one good snowfall every other year in town. If we had more practice at driving in the snow, maybe we would not all panic the moment we got half an inch of the stuff. ;-)

A cheerful new version of my Traffic Pattern design. I've wanted to make this version forever. Blogged.
After a harrowing experience driving the freeway from French Catalonia just north of the Spanish border and into Spanish Catalonia, we parked in an underground garage (very) glad to leave the car behind!! We emerged into the bustling center of town...hungry and slightly disheveled. (Try driving 95 mph - 152 kilometers an hour ... along a crowded freeway with trucks passing you on the right and left going 100 mph - 160 kilometers an hour!!! Sure to drive up the blood pressure! I had to pry my hands off the seat belt and many times just shut my eyes. .... and no i wasn't driving but often couldn't even WATCH!!)
Ah.....but Barcelona had its magic!! And I had come here for a day trip to see the work of Gaudi (next photo to be posted tomorrow). And now there was lunch!! served on the top story of a department store ... a cafeteria style buffet with a great bird's eye view of town. Perfect!! Here's an interactive photo map of Barcelona if you like: www.barcelona-tourist-guide.com/maps/barcelona-map.html

It's been weeks since a crash at Driftwood and Cypress, but these 'wave of the future' Cross Traffic Reduction Turning Lanes don't seem to be catching on that well.

looking down from the High Line, I noticed a pattern.....a conformity in traffic......but one lone soul dared to defy the leader, sullying his lead by taking his own direction on foot.............
okay, if you look closely there is someone by his side........details details......but honestly....why mess with fiction?

This works much better than the Muni data put through the same program. You can see how the traffic light timing works on many streets!
People who have doubted whether Guerrero actually has timed traffic lights can see here that it does.
The timing on Bush, Pine, and California especially stands out, as do many Tenderloin, Nob Hill, South of Market, and Mission streets.
I am kind of amazed that the clocks on the traffic signals are stable from day to day over the course of months. I had assumed that the timing on the signals would drift a few seconds each day and it wouldn't be possible to pick out patterns so easily.
Green is seconds 0-19 of each minute; red is seconds 20-39 of each minute; blue is seconds 40-59 of each minute.

Seemed very innovative at the time, and looked great on paper, but people just can't seem to get the hang of these new fangled Cross Traffic Reduction Lanes on Driftwood Road.
I think they would be better received if they came up with a catchy name.

This was a surprise! I caught this NP-3D in the traffic pattern at Moffett Federal Airfield (KNUQ); aircraft is assigned to VX-30 "Bloodhounds" from NAS Point Mugu, CA (KNTD).
Runaway in use is 36, no wind, late afternoon (video recorded with an old cam)

This still doesn't explain the pattern of the pulsations on many routes, but shows distinctive patterns on more streets than the previous version.
Green is seconds 0-19 of each minute; red is seconds 20-39 of each minute; blue is seconds 40-59 of each minute.

This is an old video of a landing at Venegono on 36 head with a very strong wind. The video was captured about an year and half ago and rediscovered these days (in order to explain to a friend how land with an heavy traverse wind without destroying the cessna).
Turbulences, a possible rotor, wind 30 kts from NW to NE - bursts up to 45 kts (as reported from the tower). The building at the border of the runaway - Aermacchi factory and some Italian Airforce buildings - have reduced the wind of about 10 kts

Graph from DoubleClick Performics showing major online holiday season traffic increases peaking on Mondays after Black Friday each year.
I cited this graph in an article I wrote on Preparing Websites for Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
About this graph, DoubleClick Performics says: "Here's how the seasonal sales patterns have looked for the last couple of years across our client base. Each year's data is lined up from Thanksgiving through Christmas, which falls a different number of days out each year, but is always the nadir of the season. The first gray bar is offline retail's so-called "Black Friday." The remaining bars are the four cyber-mondays. This season we'll have a fifth to take into account in budgeting."

Another view -- sunny day on Wiehle Ave...
At the Bennett Martin Public Library in downtown Lincoln, NE, we recently moved our increasingly popular DVD collection from the 2nd floor (where they had been near all the other "recorded" material -- CDs, Books-on-CD, VHS tapes, etc.) to a more high-traffic area on the 1st floor. Some subsequent furniture shifting to move tables out of the way and a couple of easy chairs nearby has resulted in a very popular new browsing area!
