Elkton, Maryland, the seat of Cecil County, traces its heritage back to Swedish colonists who began to populate the area in the 1690s, traveling west from present-day Delaware. Originally called "Head of Elk" for its position at the furthest navigable point of the Elk River, the town took shape in the early 18th century. During the American Revolution, Elkton was the launch site of three major campaigns, including Lafayette's 1781 pursuit of Benedict Arnold. Incorporated in 1787, the town had been the site of the court of Cecil County since 1674. Elkton would gain a distinction of a very different nature in the early 20th century when its proximity to Philadelphia/New York and the lack of a legal waiting period in the State of Maryland for the issuing of a marriage license led to Elkton becoming the wedding capital of the east. Today, Elkton's historic Main Street is lined with structures ranging from Georgian and Federal to Gothic Revival and the town's Art Deco courthouse.
Originally begun as a mission of St. Mary Anne's Church of North Elk Parish, Trinity Church at Elkton was organized in 1832. The present structure replaced an earlier frame building. Built in Gothic Revival Style and featuring a unique design of stone and brick work, the present Trinity Church was consecrated in 1867. A parish house, mimicking the church's stone and brick design, was constructed in 1904. Since 1871, Trinity has been the Parish Church of Trinity Parish, separated from North Elk Parish.
Natchez Trace Parkway Bridge across Birdsong Hollow.
The double arch bridge at milepost 438 on the Natchez Trace Parkway was completed in 1994 and received the Presidential Award for Design Excellence in 1995 for its innovative design. The bridge rises 155 feet above the valley and eliminates the need for spandrel columns.
Preparing your terminal tackle. Building dozens and dozens of steel traces in various shapes and styles and lengths and strengths for fly fishing on pike. Big plans :-)
