Great Spotted Woodpeckers do not visit my garden feeders as they don't seem to like crossing the fields that surround my village. I see them frequently though whenever I walk in local woods, though I rarely get chance to photograph them. Though I know many of you are privileged to have them visit hides with feeding stations. Nearly every photograph of Great Spotted Woodpecker is of it sitting vertically on a trunk, or maybe on a bird feeder. But this one was a bit different as it landed briefly like a songbird, crosswise on a narrow Ash twig. This view really shows off the extensive crimson on the undertail though there are more obscuring twigs than I would have liked. This looks like a female to me as I cannot see any trace of red on the back of the head. I took this in early spring near Penistone in South Yorkshire.
Its scientific name Dendrocopos major translates literally as greater wood-striker, which suits him perfectly and differentiates him from Dendrocopos minor, his smaller rarer cousin, the Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. You will also notice that there are no hyphens in these names, indicating that it is the Spotted Woodpeckers themselves that are Greater and Lesser, rather than the spots. There are about 130,000 pairs of Great Spotted Woodpeckers breeding in Britain, which is only about 1 to 2% of the European population.
EN: As simple as simplicity, these are traces done by the water in the sand of a beach, the reflection of the sun and the clouds in the water, and the footprints of a seagull. Sometimes art and life become one, as if it were meant to be.
It breaks my heart to know that Kylie is gone. She was a beautiful soul who graced us with her gift for creating beautiful landscapes.

There is only one happiness in life : to love, and to be loved.
If you feel you're all alone, you gotta know that somewhere there's some person who would do anything just to make you happy :)
Today's Daily Verse :
See what great love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! The reason the world does not know us is that it did not know him.

Happy weekend everyone!
These portraits I did for an exhibition, we are raising funds for an Elders center in my area. Here, things are hard for elders, no retirement fees for anyone, so when they have no families they have to live on charity :(
No flash, only natural light. Thanks Pete and Claudio for the tips!!
A sunny Saturday, leisure time on the pool. I am just not interested in hanging on the beach or a pool for long time without some activity so I took my camera with me.
The ball was moving slowly around the pool, moved by water circulating through filters and I was trying to capture entire scene in the moment when the ball would make the best composition in relation to the crocs and the edge of the pool.

Now just a roofless shell after a fire a few years ago, but it appears to have new windows for some reason.
Long exposure at Overstrand in Norfolk. Not overly happy with the processing on this yet but it'll do for now.
