The problem with the wampas was their attitude, always looking for a fight they were. With everyone – and everything, big and small.
They rarely won their fights, though. Poor things.
In September 2014 I photographed this for a page in the Lego Blocks magazine. I planned to do a more elaborate shoot but the first version worked so well that I didn't proceed. I planned to do something later but then I saw this painting and thought the idea was done for.
Tonight, having stored the "Three Kings" Lego AT-AT walkers on my work table for weeks, I decided to give it a go after all. I just replaced the rebel trooper for something different. One go before putting the walkers away for a moment in an attempt to keep the table clear for work at least a few days.
…and 100! We made it. 100 minifigure silhouettes.
I launched this project as an homage to the Lego minifigure which evolved so much since the first one in 1978 (new hairpieces, new moulds,…), yet it’s simple shape keep it recognisable: you see the silhouette, you recognise the character and yet you recognise it is a Lego minifigure. With only some head moulds or accessories, you can create very iconic characters.
With this project, I tried to find minifgures from the popular culture which were recognisable even as a shadow. Ok, not all my pictures are based on minifigures (I took some dinosaur pictures for example).
Simple as it seems, I had difficulties with some characters. For example, Spiderman which silhouette looks like the same as a blank minifgure.
I was also amazed by the appreciation I got when sharing this project. A lot of people loved it which made me want to push myself farther and continue beyond the original 100.

As well as being an homage to the Lego minifigure, this picture is also an “inverted” version of one of my pictures that I called “Lego rainbow Minifigure”. You can find it on my feed (flic.kr/p/u3gwAQ). Note that you can make monochrome minifigures with all the colours that you see on this background. I know because I have them ;-)
And what now? Well, let’s continue. Starting in two days, I will start posting the second series of 100_Shadows. If you have any ideas of character you want to see, don’t hesitate to let me know. Maybe you’ll see them in this new series.
