When I don’t feel like shooting toys and don’t have many ideas I find grabbing a toy I haven’t shot for some time helps in overcoming this creative block.

I hadn’t photographed Miguel from Coco for awhile and so I went out and posed him in the backyard. I had done some pruning of our tree and hadn’t cleaned up the branches yet.

This Miguel is quite difficult to pose as the leg joints are very loose - especially at the knees. I attempted to stiffen the joints with nail polish but it hasn’t seemed to have much of an effect.

After posing him in the debris it looked like a Jurassic jungle and boom - the inspiration hit.

I feel a lot of my inspiration for my photography comes like this. It’s not there until I start the creative process. I like to tell my kiddos bedtime stories and I have an ongoing Ted the Elephant series. They would rather hear a story than stay up to watch a movie. I find that flattering but at the same time sometimes the creative juices are wearing thin at the end of a long day and I’m fresh out of ideas. I find this same method of starting kicks the creativity into full throttle for me. Some of the best stories happen when there are no preconceived ideas. Interesting...🤔

So my kiddos were out in the backyard and found what they though was a dead lizard in a toy bin that collected a lot of rain water. My boy came in with this T-Rex saying a dead lizard was on it; they had poked it to make sure. I stopped him just as he was throwing it in the trash bin. I looked closer and the lizards eye opened. Apparently he was too cold to move, and had latched himself to the head of T-Rex. I placed him in another bin with a warming lamp. I got a few shots because when does this ever happen? After about 30min my daughter reached in to pet the lizard and it bolted as she let out a multitude of shrieks. I let the lizard go on our wall and he scrambled off... fun stuffs!
