Toytown Boats

This week’s challenge, Tilt-Shift, had been hanging over me and I had not had time to do anything about it. Today was the last day I could take it, so I made and effort to get out with Cumulus the big Domo to try and find a suitable location.Eventually I managed to get something usable at Sandford Mill Lock, with Domo overlooking the tiny toytown boats in the distance. In the immortal words of Rocky and Bullwinkle, "and now, time for something different".

Many, many, many months ago, I was at Square One waiting for a transaction meet up (for the Fate prize figure, in case you were wondering) and as I usually am prone to do I wandered into the Disney Store.

Disney merch is kind of a mixed bag. For sure it's a place where they gouge you, but there can be some neat surprises there - exclusive surprises, I might add. I actually do like some of the sculpts on their larger dolls, but they don't quite fit anywhere in my collection.

During this particular trip, I happened across the Avengers line from the new Disney Toybox collection, which are of course kid-ified action figures of various Disney properties, like something out of Kingdom Hearts. It's almost like Disney repurposed the Infinity designed team.

Naturally, I gravitated towards Black Widow.

Opening up the figure, I offer up the following observations.

First off, for whatever reason (I'm guessing budget.. again), Widow does not have her comic style yellow belt, as advertised on the back of the box. Who knows.. maybe yellow paint costs more due to multiple layers.. I dunno. Overall, this figure seems to be inspired by a combination of all her appearances, ranging from the red short hair (Avengers), black body suit (Age of Ultron/Civil War), yellow bracelets (comic), and her weapon (Infinity War).

The actual figure itself has a decent amount of articulation. It's no Figma, but it's much better than what I grew up with. Pretty much the figure is ball joints all around. No waist, ab, or neck post movement, or tilting ankles.

Kind of light on the accessories, basically consisting of the figure and her weapon.

Her quarterstaff can be segmented and dual wielded and for some reason, seem more in scale with this figure than the Figuarts version was. Or maybe I just girls with big sticks.

Yes, interpret that as you must.

The sticks are designed in such a way that I suspect has to do with child safety laws (the staff splits in half, and the handle comes off the sticks as well), which allows for a neat holstered mode on her back. It's just that, as one would suspect, the QC is kind of crap and as a result things tend to fall apart very easily... yet I still managed to not lose this thing.

The sculpting is quite nice - simplistic but still portraying the character quite well and as mentioned above, very reminiscent of the Infinity series figure. The body is functional, though perhaps due to the smaller size the joints aren't as unsightly as its Marvel Legends counterparts. Production didn't leave an unacceptable number of poor finishes on the plastic.

The paint is... not bad. The body paint apps are actually pretty sharp, but it's not like there's a whole lot to actually do on the figure. Face paint apps are a mixture of "pretty good" and "dollar store", so in other words pretty typical for a Disney toy.

So is this something that I'd collect the whole line of? Not personally, but this isn't really my niche, as it were.

I think kids with connections to the various properties will dig these, though Lord have mercy upon the souls of the poor parents, as these are about $19 here in Ontario after taxes. I'm crossing my fingers that my kids don't have a Disney fetish.. so far, so good.

As an adult collector though with a desire to collect North American toys, it's a tough call. The Marvel Legends stuff is definitely larger and comes with more accessories and maybe more articulation, but it seems the final product is cleaner on these toys. Having said that, you're never going to get the full line up from Disney, nor are you going to get the "grown up" look, so at the end of the day, it's probably going to be a supplemental line.

World's Smallest: Micro Toy Box "Series 1" Giftset (Super Impulse)

Poor thing tried SO hard to climb on top of her toybox. I love her tippy toes!

When I did the art for this box, I wanted the whole box itself to look to be a building on fire. That's exactly what I did with this wrap-around styled box. Each side of the box cover is a side of the building. The "top" looks like the roof of the building with smoke billowing from the fire. Finally, if you look at the bottom panel it looks as how I imagine the bottom of a building would look - with pipes, conduits, and foundation pillars.

In the forground I did an upshot of the featured robot. On one of the sides I have several subordinate Chief Smoky robots with a fireman's safety net / trampoline about to catch a pretty alien girl who's jumped from the building. In several windows I came up with different aleins (if you look close on the side of the box I snuck in Quisp from one of my favorite childhood breakfast cereals).

The illustration was done with ink, watercolors, acrylic paint and colored pencils.

Finally, I set the type for the box. While I very much like the type fonts I picked out - apparently I was so enamored with my flames that I really set the type way too small for the box, it should twice the size it is. A small error which I wish I could go back and fix, otherwise, I am happy with the box.

Toybox Tomatoes, Caramelized Cipollini Onions, "Haricots Verts," Romaine Lettuce and Bottarga-Hen Egg Emulsion

Our fifth course and third time choosing. This was Zach's choice. The pork belly was encased in a very thin pastry, I think. It gave you a crispy texture to go along with the melt-in-your-mouth pork belly. There was also corn puree on the plate and that was really good.

Okay, about the complaints. There were two older women at the table next to us. One had this same dish and said it was dry. The pork belly Zach had was far from dry. At that point the server asked if she could bring something else instead. Woman said no. Server was not taking "no" for an answer and insisted on bringing out a little something. What they both received was the Hen Egg Custard in a hollowed out egg shell. From what I've read, this is another of Keller's signature dishes. The woman told us to complain about something so we could get it. If I had only known that earlier.

Construction Duck

I found Construction Duck supervising the works at the Barbican Centre today, while on my way to work. We had a quick chat and he was happy to pose for my picture, making a great image for this week’s theme, People at Work. Well, Ducks at Work, anyway!

Fond Farewells

Tomorrow Sunny will be setting off on the next leg of his journey, going to visit Simon at the seaside! We have all enjoyed Sunny's visit a great deal, and will miss the little guy terribly when he leaves. So the Domo clan held a very drunken and raucous leaving party for him this evening. There were many tales told, ales drunk and the usual excited shouting going on all evening. Now my head hurts!

I love this little fellow - one day I might suck it up and buy one of the big'uns!

I used Nelly Nero's 'Grunge It' action for a bit of a pop.

A dream sized workshop if I ever win the Powerball. This one has been going up over the last few weeks and I had to stop in and feed that fantasy.

Today we took a snow day and I went for a long photowalk with the toys. Geeky insisted on coming along, of course, as did Dai and Leo. They had their scarf and hat to keep them warm, but Geeky just needed his enthusiasm!

Tweeting From The Branches

Since Redlegs came home with us yesterday, he’s been getting on well with the other toys. But he has complained that the house is a little bit warm for him all the time. It turns out he’s from Siberia, so is quite used to the cold. This morning he hopped outside and sat on the frosty branches for a while, tweeting happily to himself and anyone else who would listen.
