Have an awesome Friday, everyone...

The Congress Avenue Bridge spans the impoundment of the Colorado River known as Lady Bird Lake on the south side of Downtown Austin, Texas.

The sun sets on Downtown Austin and the South First Street Bridge as it spans Lady Bird Lake.

HFF!!

This is a small inlet at Festival Beach over looking Lake Lady Bird Johnson.

Going to get my flu shot today..:) I had the one that wasn't very good last year but I'm proof it wasn't very good because I caught the flu. Ouch! The shots suppose to be a better match this year, I hope so because I really didn't like having the flu.

Hope everyone has a great weekend

I posted a shot like this one on slider Sunday, but I just really like the point of view on this one so I'm posting it as well.

Today was remember Pearl Harbor day. I had almost forgotten it. On December 7, 1941 over 2200 military personal lost there lives in combat. It's really something we should remember.

The Missouri-Pacific/Union Pacific Railroad Bridge—built in 1902—spans Lady Bird Lake on the south side of Downtown Austin, Texas.

It's hard to find the right image to slide, but I think this one works pretty good. Austin has this great little lake in the middle of town and on a pretty weekend, there are hundreds of people on it canoeing and paddle boarding , OK, maybe not that many..;) But a lot, nonetheless...:)

Going to a festival in Dripping Springs Sunday. Hope it isn't too hot

And Austin, Texas skyline as a backdrop..;)..lol..No surprise there. Something about warm weather that make me want to get out on the water. Here in Central Texas we still have plenty of sunshine and warm, sometimes hot, weather..;)

With the sun about to fade below the horizon, city lights begin to illuminate the beautiful skyline of Austin, Texas.

A blue-hour view of the Art-Deco style Lamar Boulevard Bridge as seen from Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge in downtown Austin. Completed in 1942 as the second permanent bridge to cross the Colorado River in downtown Austin, the Lamar Boulevard Bridge is one of the last Art Deco-style open-spandrel concrete arch bridges built in Texas. The bridge was named an Austin Landmark in 1993 and added to the National Register of Historic Places the following year.

This was always just, Townlake. I know! You would think a city like Austin could do better than that. Now, it's Lady Bird Lake. The former first lady and President Johnson's wife. It was named after her because of all the work she did to beautify the lake and the trail around it.

A view of the gnarled-looking exposed roots of a bald cypress tree on Red Bud Isle, a 17-acre Isle that lies on Lady Bird Lake, just below the Lake Austin dam. Part of the Austin Park system, it is a popular leash-free park for dogs, as well as canoers and kayakers.

The creation of Red Bud Isle lay in the destruction of the original Lake Austin dam. On April 7, 1900, after a historic rainfall, the dam broke, leaving a 60-foot gap in the wall. This caused large granite blocks to start flowing downstream and provided a foundation that would become Red Bud Isle.

Over the years, sediments and plants started making their ways onto the island. Cypress and red bud trees were the first to grow on the island, which can be found all over the park now.

Since the beginning of the 2000s, Austin has been undergoing a skyscraper boom, which includes recent construction on new office, hotel and residential buildings. Downtown's buildings are somewhat spread out, partly due to a set of zoning restrictions that preserve the view of the Texas State Capitol from various locations around Austin, known as the Capitol View Corridors.

Unless you are a dog, swimming is not allowed in Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir of the Colorado River that runs past downtown Austin. Indeed, when the Auditorium Shores Dog Park (shown in yesterday's post) was redeveloped in 2015, three distinct water access areas were created for dogs could take a swim. The dog park, nearby to the spot I was standing at when I took this photo in 2019, even includes a doggy shower and drinking fountain.

Unfortunately, the presence of toxic algae has periodically made it unsafe for dogs to be in the water. Dog owners are now advised not to let their dogs swim or drink from any part of Lady Bird Lake, and especially to stay clear of algae that was responsible for several dog deaths in 2019.

I am grateful for what I am and have. My thanksgiving is perpetual. - Henry David Thoreau

Have a wonderful day, everyone...

Friends: Will be posting and commenting periodically while in ATX.

A view of downtown Austin as seen from the Pfluger Pedestrian Bridge that connects that north and south shores of Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir of the Colorado River. Google's beautiful new Austin office headquarters was completed earlier this year. The 594-floor building, with its west facing side shaped like a sail, is just one of several new and architecturally impressive downtown skyscrapers that are recently completed or are under construction.

To the left of center are the upper floors of The Independent, the tallest residential building in the United States west of the Mississippi River. The jenga-shaped, 690-foot structure became Austin's tallest building when it was completed in 2019. If you look closely in the distance behind and to the right of The Independent is Sixth and Guadalupe, a skyscraper under construction that already has topped out at 875 feet. And its reign as the city's tallest will be short-lived as construction already is underway on Waterline (98 Red River), that will become the tallest building in Texas at 1,022-feet when it is completed in 2026.

This place is booming!

A view of the Austin skyline as seen from Lou Neff Point in Zilker Park. The point is the juncture of Barton Springs with Lady Bird Lake, a reservoir of the Colorado River that fronts downtown Austin.

The 1969 Town Lake Gazebo was the first public structure built in the effort to beautify the south shore of Town Lake (now Lady Bird Lake), which was created after the construction of Longhorn Dam on the Colorado River in 1960. The Austin Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), established in the 1950s for women working in the construction industry, spearheaded and raised funds for the project. Thirty-five visionary women in Austin saw the possibility of putting something on the shores for all to enjoy and dedicate it to the construction industry.

Inspired by the then First Lady of the United States Lady Bird Johnson, a national leader in environmental beautification and later the honorary co-chair of the Town Lake Beautification Committee, the Austin chapter began planning and raising money for the structure in 1965. Almost 100 contractors and suppliers enthusiastically supported the gazebo project with donations of materials and labor. The gazebo was dedicated in June 1970, and then in 1984, the structure was named for Fannie Davis, a founding member of the Austin chapter of NAWIC.

The gazebo was designed by architect J. Sterry Nill to resemble an inverted morning glory flower. The design reflects the diverse architectural trends of the 1960s, and playfully references Frank Lloyd Wright's geometric experimentation and combination of organic material with modern forms and the rustic park architecture found in central Texas.

Both bridges span Lady Bird Lake, a river-like reservoir on the Colorado River named in honor of former FLOTUS, the late Lady Bird Johnson.

The tallest building in this view is The Independent, which was about one year away from being completed at the time this photograph was taken in November 2018. At a height of 690 ft (210 m), the Independent is the tallest residential skyscraper in the United States west of the Mississippi River. It will remain the tallest building in Austin until 2022 when 6 X Guadalupe, a residential and office tower now under construction, tops out at 847 feet (258 m).

Below and to the left of The Austonian is the Frost Bank Tower, noted by its crystal crown. The Frost Bank Tower was the first skyscraper in the United States to start construction after the September 11 attacks. The 33-floor, 516-foot-tall office building was the tallest building in the city upon its completion in 2004. It is now the sixth tallest building in Austin as of July 2021.

The scene on an overcast, mid-November day at Auditorium Shores Dog Park. Located on the south side of Lady Bird Lake, this 4.5 acre not fully fenced park was redeveloped in 2015. It is a great place for dogs to make new canine friends, play frisbee fetch or take a swim in Lady Bird Lake (only for the dogs, not their owners.)

The redeveloped park now features three distinct water access areas for dogs, a drinking fountain for dogs with a shower to rinse dogs off, and an interior walking trail. The park, as can be said of all of Auditorium Shores, is a nice place to take in the Austin skyline day or night.

Here... to a rosy 2021...

Wishing you and yours a 2021 full of health and happiness.

Have a delightful day, everyone.

The sail shaped building in this skyline view of downtown Austin is Block 185, a 35-story, 594-foot sailboat-inspired office building that is Google's new Austin headquarters. Interior buildout of the building is currently underway with occupancy expected later this year. With 793,883 square feet of office space—enough for about 5,000 people—the Google tower includes tech-company perks such as a two-story fitness center with creek views, bike storage area and a garage filled with EV charging stations. There are lounges, kitchen and dining areas, conference centers, a bar/tavern, and even transit monitoring station where people can view bus traffic and, someday, light rail schedules.

The internationally acclaimed Connecticut-based firm of Pelli Clarke Pelli designed the building. The firm is probably best known for the Petronas Towers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Google's new Austin headquarters is just one of several projects in and around Austin that led Forbes to describe Austin as the #1 U.S. city of the future. Austin is the second fastest growing city in the U.S. out of the 50 largest metropolitan areas according to North Carolina's Kenan Institute of Private Enterprise. Nicknamed "Silicon Hills," the city is a thriving hubs of tech startups and big name tech companies.
