When these little hummingbirds land they immediately lift their wings for a fraction of a second. Of course, as soon as you've seen it, that's the shot you want!!! Taken at Guango Lodge, Ecuador.
So the first was too big (Aquamarine), the second was too little (Brown Tourmaline), hoping this is just right. Brown Tourmaline is known for the healing crystal.
I was able to get hold of another gem, this time not so macro, just a close up. So Rudolph with your Tourmaline so bright will you guide the sleigh tonight...thanks for the loaner for the shot😊👍 !
Gemstones: indigo Tourmaline earrings that are handmade. Wax candle glass was the prop I used.
This is my entry for Looking close... on Friday! - "Gemstones"
Dark hummingbird with a fairly short straight bill. The male has a bright purple throat patch and blue-green forecrown. The female has a white throat. Also, note white under tail coverts and fairly long notched tail.
Heliangelus exortis
It was a very dark afternoon at Guango. The skies opened several times as we wandered the grounds by ourselves. The Ecuador we visited this time was very different from pre-Covid Ecuador - we very often were the only visitors to many amazing and in the past crowded birding hot spots. Tourism was destroyed in 2020 and has not recovered - it was the fourth largest sector of the national economy (number one is oil). We heard the same story everywhere - zero income for three years. No assistance. Folks in South America generally don’t save money either, as the hard lesson of currency devaluation has been learned: money saved will become worthless. Truly hard times for nearly everyone, and it ain’t over. It was good to be a tourist and do our part for the recovery.
Rough gemstone

Heliangelus exortis
(Tourmaline sunangel / Colibrí turmalina)
The tourmaline sunangel (Heliangelus exortis) is a species of hummingbird in the "coquettes", tribe Lesbiini of subfamily Lesbiinae. It is found in Colombia and Ecuador.
The tourmaline sunangel is 10 to 11 cm (3.9 to 4.3 in) long. Their bill is blackish, straight, and of medium length.
The tourmaline sunangel is found in all three Andes ranges of Colombia. It inhabits the interior and edges of humid to wet premontane forest, especially cloudforest and elfin forest. In elevation it mainly ranges between 2,300 and 3,400 m (7,500 and 11,200 ft).
