This is the one I won for my weather pictures, it's on my kitchen windowsill catching the sunrise beyond.

Nata il 14 dicembre 2004, la Riserva Naturale Regionale Sentina è la più piccola area protetta marchigiana, ma con una grande valenza ambientale.
Un paesaggio di acqua e sabbia che si sviluppa per circa 180 ettari all'interno del Comune di San Benedetto del Tronto, tra l'abitato di Porto d'Ascoli a Nord e il fiume Tronto a Sud.
La Sentina è costituita da ambienti unici come cordoni sabbiosi, zone umide retrodunali, e praterie salmastre che ospitano una ricca e peculiare flora ormai scomparsa in quasi tutto il litorale adriatico devastato dall'antropizzazione.
Notevole è l'importanza dell'area per l'avifauna migratoria, che trova nella Riserva l'unica possibilità di sosta costiera tra le aree umide del delta del Po e del Gargano.

The Sentina Natural Regional Reserve was established in 2004 by a regional law and is the smallest Park in the Marche region.
For the natural organization of the places, Sentina is considered a homogeneous system of land, river, and lake areas, a landscape of waters and sand covering an area of 177.55 ha, entirely in the territory of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, between the town of Porto d'Ascoli in the north and the river Tronto in the south, between the coastline in the east and the railway line in the west.
Sentina Regional Nature Reserve represents for San Benedetto del Tronto an invaluable treasure for its natural environments, life quality, and a differentiated tourist offer completing the already existing proposals offered by the seaside tourism.
The Manila American Cemetery and Memorial is located in Fort Bonifacio, Metro Manila, within the boundaries of the former Fort William McKinley. With a total of 17,206 graves, it has the largest number of graves of any cemetery for U.S. personnel killed during World War II and holds war dead from the Philippines and other allied nations.
This photo is from Marado [Mara Island]. Marado represents the southernmost point in South Korean territory. The island is about 30km from the southern port of Jeju and the trip by ferry took about 15-20 minutes. The island is comparatively small (approximately 0.3 square kilometers) and you can walk around its entirety at a leisurely pace in about 90 minutes. Marado is home to about 90 residents and "…has long been known for its population being composed of strong women and docile men." (Wiki). While there, we saw traditional "haenyeo" women divers actively working at their trade of free diving to gather seafood.

Im Laufe des Zweiten Weltkriegs erhielt das Münster Symbolcharakter für beide Parteien. Adolf Hitler, der es am 28. Juni 1940 besichtigte, wollte aus dem Sakralbau ein „Nationalheiligtum des deutschen Volkes“ machen. Am 2. März 1941 schworen sich Generalmajor Leclerc und die Soldaten seiner Division in Kufra (in Libyen), die „Waffen erst dann niederzulegen, wenn unsere schönen Farben wieder auf der Straßburger Kathedrale wehen“ („Le serment de Koufra“, Der Schwur von Koufra). Diesen Schwur erfüllten sie am 23. November 1944. Am 11. August 1944 erlitt das Gebäude Schäden, als es von britischen und amerikanischen Fliegerbomben getroffen wurde, endgültig behoben wurden diese erst 1990. "
My two favourite birding locations in Ontario - Pelee Island and Prince Edward County - both jut into bodies of water and mark the southernmost tips of their regions. As a consequence, both areas host significant wine-making operations, which in turn attracts boutique hotels and restaurants and a very different kind of tourism.
The odd thing is that both areas have managed to retain large areas of very rough terrain for wildlife, and these tend to be unpopular with the folks from Ottawa and Toronto who are visiting for other reasons. That is quite obvious when backroading: driving on the many dirt roads that crisscross the areas near the water. Barred Owls, Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawks, Bald Eagles, and even the occasional Upland Sandpiper are fairly common sights on these rarely travelled routes.
I was alerted by my friend Paul to the location of a Red Fox den on one of these roads, and made a point of keeping my eyes peeled for adults and kits. This adult was spotted hunting for rodents along a grassy ridge alongside one of these roads.
I slowed down and stopped, pulling off on the opposite (wrong) side of the road, and then turned off the engine. Unlike the tamer Red Foxes around Ottawa, who are more used to sharing space with humans, these creatures are more skittish. Homes are pretty scarce in this area, and the Foxes are more natural predators.
In any event, I figured I had about thirty seconds to work. I had the windows down and my camera ready to go on the front seat. I wanted to really lean out of the window to avoid heat waves distorting the image. The Fox had just failed to catch something and had assumed a very focused pose, planning its next move. A short burst of three images and it was gone into the tall grasses of the nearby field.

Sun Voyager Statue on a grey, rainy day. Reykjavik, Iceland. The city is a beautiful place but the rain made things rather chilly. We spent part of the day at Perlan, the Natural History Museum. An exceedingly excellent place with fabulous special exhibitions. An ice Cave at -15 degrees C, Volcano movie and then a new special big screen dive into an erupting volcano. Amazing indeed. The staff were very welcoming, Jack in particular.

I suppose that this one would be the aspect of Tossa when Ava Gardner fell in love with this town and Spain in 1951. The filming of “Pandora and the flying Dutchman” meant the beginning of the tourist boom of the Costa Brava, and then all Spain too.

Tossa de Mar is a holiday resort located in Catalonia on the Costa Brava, about 95 kilometres north of Barcelona and 100 kilometres south of the French border. It is accessible through Girona airport, some distance north.
There is ample evidence of settlements dating back to the Neolithic period, and it is believed that the area has been continuously populated since that time. Between the 4th century BC and the 1st century BC appeared the first Iberian settlements, followed shortly after by the Romans in the 1st century.
In 966 Tossa is ceded by Count Miró of Barcelona to the Abbey of Ripoll. Some two centuries latter, in 1187 Tossa is granted its charter by the Abbot of Ripoll, coinciding with the building of a church atop Mount Guardí, the remnants of which can still be seen today.
Sometime in the 12th century the mediaeval town was walled off and a castle was built on the highest point of Mt. Guardí, this castle was to be subsequently replaced by a wind mill, and this in turn by a lighthouse which is still operational.
By the year 1500 the first houses were built extra-muros to accommodate population growth. This process was greatly accelerated during the 17th and 18th centuries, shaping an urban configuration which was to remain practically unchanged until the arrival of mass tourism in the 1950s.

Yo supongo que éste sería el aspecto de Tossa cuando Ava Gardner se enamoró de este pueblo y de España en 1951. El rodaje de la película "Pandora y el Holandés Errante" significó el inicio del boom turístico de la Costa Brava, y del de toda España en consecuencia.

Tossa de Mar, también llamado Tossa, es un municipio de 5.260 habitantes (INE 2005) perteneciente a la provincia de Gerona, Cataluña (España). Situada en la comarca de La Selva, su ubicación en la Costa Brava hace que sea un destino turístico importante.
En la bahía de Tossa, posee un recinto amurallado románico, la Vila Vella, en un pequeño promontorio en plena playa con siete torres circulares, se estima su origen en el siglo XII para evitar los ataques de piratas. En su interior los restos de una iglesia y el palacio del gobernador del siglo XIV. Cerca del recinto se encuentran los hallazgos arqueológicos de lo que fuera una villa romana del siglo IV, la villa romana de Els Ametllers. Posee un museo municipal dentro del propio recinto con colecciones arqueológicas, de pintura local y extranjera, escultura y vidrio.
En los años 50, Ava Gardner y James Mason llegaron a la pequeña localidad para rodar "Pandora y el holandés errante" y eso le dio cierta fama al pueblo, en cuyo filme se bautizó "Esperanza".
Marc Chagall la bautizó con el nombre de "Paraíso azul" en 1933.
