BBC Four - Ident

Top of the Pops

(Original Broadcast Date: 28th January 1982)

TOP of the pops BBC TV 1980

Beacon South Quarter, Sandyford, Dublin.

I don't know when this is actually being broadcast. Judging by the overhead blimp it's a show to promote their forthcoming Stadium Arcadium double-album, but they actually played more of a Greatest Hits set.

Me? Never liked 'em, sorry. I've had to sit through their enormodrome drone at the arse end of too many festivals. But they're more bearable in front of a few hundred people than tens of thousands.

(The album's on WEA, by the way, so I suggest you just bittorrent it rather than give any more money to that bunch of boorish, gak-addled morons and their ludicrous hiring policies. Bitter? Me?)

Somebody much closer with a much better camera has got some pics of the previous night's Radio 1 show here.

And a couple more here.

Happy Toy-in-the-frame Thursday!

Emma and her brother Peanut decided to listen to the boom box after Mom. When Peanut pressed play, he and Emma were energized to hear an unusual, guitar-driven song "In A Big Country" that had propelled the Scottish band Big Country to reach a moment of international stardom in the 1980s.

Big Country also performed on the Band Aid song "Do They Know It's Christmas?"

The kids loved the song so much that they looked up the video on YouTube. In 1983, the video for "In A Big Country" got a lot of play on MTV. And lead guitarist Stuart Adamson had been SOOOOO cute!

(They personally liked best on YouTube the Top of the Pops video, Big Country - In a Big Country (TOTP 1983) because it's so '80s!)

The lyrics spoke to them as well:

"...I've never seen you look like this without a reason

...And that's a desperate way to look for someone who is still a child

In a big country, dreams stay with you

Like a lover's voice fires the mountainside

Stay alive..."*

After Stuart Adamson (1958-2001) died, U2's The Edge said in the eulogy at his funeral that Big Country wrote songs that he wished U2 could have written...

1980s, where did you go?

Merry Christmas everybody! Hope you are all enjoying a fabulous festive fun day. Can you guess which is his and which is hers LOL. XXX

Ongoing restoration work on HMS Gannet - the fact that this museum is work in progress is definitely part of it's charm.

Phil Collins' paint pot ? Possibly apocryphal story about Phil Collins' TOTP appearance for 'In The Air Tonight' with paint pot on his piano to 'celebrate' (?) his wife's desertion with the interior decorator.

A message for you from Phil here

Mammoth guitarsenal for the recording sessions at Purple when every song was in a different tuning. Total pain in the arse. Squier Telecaster (broken before this once and repaired and then sold to Ian in Econoline/Hey Colossus, then sold back to me, then sold back to Ian who still has it - UPDATE APRIL 08 : I bought it back again), Fender Telecaster (sold to Luke Younger), Gordon Smith (sold to Marceline from Diskant), Fender Jaguar (still have it, in much worse condition), Commodore (still have it) and Phill's lovely Wal bass that's been on TOTP with The Eurhythmics.

Google two factor authentication running on a Pebble Watch, based on the Arduino version. It implements RFC-6238, "TOTP: Time-Based One-Time Password Algorithm" with a version of the SHA1 hash copied from an arduino library. The bargraph at the bottom shows how much longer the code is valid and updates with a new code every thirty seconds.

Shaun used to be the dancing bassist in the 90s indie super-group "1000 Yard Stare". They were top class.

TYS reached no37 in the hit parade. Unfortunately this chart position went unreported on 'Top of the Pops' because of Michael Jackson.

In showcasing a 9 minute video Jacko forced TOTP into slicing 40 through to 30 from the chart countdown.

The #3 has small brown spots that are not washing off, so I'm thinking a benzoyle peroxide treatment is in order. #4 has remarkably clean legs but appears to have lost her big toe (perhaps in the same accident that blew off her eyebrows?)

I was going to do it sooner or later - upload a picture of someone who in the past year or so has become a hate figure. It's a certain platinum-haired DJ who helped to raise awareness of the dangers of not wearing a seat belt, someone who was a prolific fundraiser for charity, hosted the first TV show of its kind to help kids demolish a cooling tower, get a cabbie to 'follow that cab' and them some. He also helped to advertise British Rail in the 1980s. I think you know who I'm on about.

You see, I'm being objective here because the one-time miner, wrestler and dance hall manager did have his good points. I'm not defending what he was alleged to have done but all these allegations CAN'T be proven - not in a court of law anyway because he's DEAD. Besides, it should have been dealt with years ago because if there's one thing you can't do it's apply modern-day standards to old crimes.

Back to this picture, it's a screenshot from a documentary on the former DJ shown about this time two years ago of Jimbo wheeling a girl through what might be Leeds General Infirmary in about 1971 to the strains of "I'm Gonna Run Away From You" by Tammi Lynn (it was an except from TOTP). There's something very atmospheric about this shot of a Victoria hospital at the beginning of the 1970s, modern hospitals won't have this character in years to come. This one is from further along the corridor or it might have been a different one because I'm not FROM Leeds.

Had I not been a fan of Jim'll Fix It or indeed not watched TOTP when he was presenting, then I would probably agree with many but that makes it hard to distance myself from the man.

This is very weird for me, I usually never upload out of order. I have to upload everything by when it was taken but today I decided to upload just two photos that I have taken recently.

This my friends is Josh M. He's a super talented designer and I am hoping that I will be able to work with him soon on a few things. Check out his work! www.joshuaminnichdesign.com

By the way, any comments inferring that I need my head seeing to for uploading these shots of Jimbo will be deleted. I treat this like my website so I'll post what I fucking like, okay, but within reason of course.
