Das Tote Gebirge ist eine Gebirgsgruppe der Nördlichen Kalkalpen in den Ostalpen. Es ist ein Plateaugebirge im Bereich der nördlichen Steiermark und des südlichen Oberösterreich, zwischen Trauntal im Westen und Stodertal im Osten. Der Name leitet sich vermutlich von der stark verkarsteten und großteils vegetationslosen Hochfläche ab. Die höchste Erhebung ist der Große Priel mit 2515 m.
The Totes Gebirge is a group of mountains in Austria, part of the Northern Limestone Alps, lying between the Salzkammergut and the Ennstaler Alpen. The name Totes Gebirge is derived from the German words tot meaning "dead", referring to the apparent lack of vegetation, and Gebirge meaning "mountain range". The area is a large karstic plateau with steep sides, and several mountain peaks above 2000 m. The highest point is the summit of Großer Priel, at 2,515 metres (8,251 ft)
Blick über das noch nebelverhütte Stodertal zum Toten Gebirge mit Spitzmauer und Großer Priel. Im Herbst ist das hintere Stodertal um Hinterstoder häufig von morgendlichen Neblel verhüllt, der sich im Laufe des Vormittages auflöst. Es ist ein herrliches Erlebnis frühmorgens aus dem Neblmeer auf die umliegenden Hügel hinaufzusteigen.
View over the still fog covered Stodertal (valley) to the Totes Gebirge with the prominent peaks of Spitzmauer and Großer Priel. The rearmost part of the Stodertal around Hinterstoder is often covered by morning mist in autumn. This mist then usually lifts when it is touched by the morning sun. It is a wonderful experience to climb up the surrounding hills through the sea of mist in the morning.
Das passiert wenn man alte Tagebaulöcher flutet. Die toten Bäume stehen wie Streichhölzer in der Pampe und modern langsam vor sich her. Ein Refugium für viele Vögel und seltene Arten da vom Bergbauunternehmen gut eingezäunt.
Die Natur erobert sich die Fläche allmählich wieder.

Man sieht es auf dem Bild ganz deutlich, der größte Teil des noch verbliebenen Baumbestandes im Hochharz besteht aus abgestorbenen Fichten, die vermutlich auch bald der Kettensäge zum Opfer fallen.
Davon unbeeindruckt bringt 99 234 am 2. März 2022 mit dem P 8923 bei schönstem Frühlingswetter zahlreiche Fahrgäste auf den Brocken.
Der früher dichte Fichtenwald am Brocken ist schon seit Jahren infolge der Trockenheit großflächig abgestorben. Zudem hat hier, am Königsberg, im letzten Jahr das tote Holz gebrannt wie Zunder. Da wo verkohlte Stämme auf die Strecke zu fallen drohten, hat man sie umgesägt, man sieht es rechts unten auf dem Bild. Gleichwohl sind Bilder wie dieses nur möglich, weil durch das Absterben des Waldes die "Sichtbehinderung" weggefallen war. 99 7247 bringt Zug 8925 hoch zum Brocken.
