A very amusing postcard made in 1911 in Lager Lechfeld, one of the training grounds, a Truppe Übungsplatz.
On scene is a group of soldiers from the 16th Royal Bavarian Infantry Regiment "Großherzog Ferdinand von Toskana" from Passau of the I Bayer. Armee Korps. Most men are wearing their pre-war Dunkelblau tunics with Brandenburg cuffs with vertical panel piped in white. The shoulder straps are red with yellow 16 and their leather spiked helmet features a gilt Bayern Wappen, as seen in the back right. Several men are also regimental musicians (Musiker), as evidenced by the Schwalbeneste or Swallow nests at their shoulders.
Clearly, making this picture involved drinking a lot of beer and this resulted in some priceless scenes and facial expressions. A selection of close-ups can be seen if you scroll down to the comments.
One gentleman calls for some extra attention, namely the seated NCO in the front left. He is wearing his Pickelhaube the other way around and given his facial expression, there's a fair chance that it was not deliberate, but just the best he could manage in this condition. Highly interesting is the weapon he's holding: a massive short short with sawback. I can't find information on the exact model, but these Fashinenmesser mit Säge are very scarce. Also, it was an antique by that time already, dating back to somewhere around 1850. A company troddel is tied to it. Check out the close-up for a detailed view
