موجود زنده در کوششی که برای حیات می کند ناچار است خود را طوری مجهز بسازد که بتواند در محیطی که هست بحیات خود ادامه دهد و تردیدی نیست که عوامل طبیعی و شرایط ادامه حیات همیشه و همه جا یکسان نیست بلکه مختلف و متفاوت است . این اختلاف و تفاوت شرایط ادامه حیات قهرا موجب اختلاف و تفاوت احتیاجات حیاتی موجود زنده می شود یعنی ادامه حیات در هر محیطی مستلزم مجهز بودن موجود زنده به وسایل و ابزارها و تجهیزات مخصوصی است که احتیاجات مخصوص آن محیط را رفع کند ،این فرآیند را «انطباق» در محیط می گویند
