A shelf to keep clutter off the bench.
Mostly likely the shelf will just allow room for twice as much clutter!
The shelf will be re-done soon. It's kind of uneven.

I found this ancient stone tool on the ground where I park my car. Opened the car door, looked down, saw a pretty rock, picked it up, saw indications of pressure flaking, and realized it was a stone cutting tool. Cool!
It felt good to straighten up and putter at Beth's Bicycle Braintrust today. (Homemade work bench, from scrap wood and old TriMet signs.)

The hardest part was finding a clear coating that would not ruin the alcohol based dye markers. A clear coating is absolutely necessary to keep markers from smudging and being wiped off. I actually spent days researching this...contacting several company technical departments, and doing research online. Once I decided to chance a coating , it took 3 trips to different stores before finding the clear spray.
I used the clear spray in thin layers...then colored in the drawings more, or layering more color (reds and oranges seem to fade out with clear coatings). Luckily the clear spray was able to isolate the markers from mixing and bleeding together. A few more coats on top and the reading tools are washable and permanent. *
I think this project could be done at home and perhaps even the children themselves could decorate their own read out loud tool. Its a very inexpensive project, truly helpful ...and FUN!
*Washable with soap and water...not hand sanitizing wipes or hand sanitizing liquids...as those contain alcohol and would destroy the finish.

I found this new group yesterday, for people who take macro photos at work ... which has inspired me to do a bit more of that!
Taken with iPhone 3GS with a home-made macro lens from a disposable camera.
The Mazzou castable refractory cement makes a nice lining for the forge. It's pretty solid and certianly holds up better than the Kaowool alone.

A surprising amount of equipment and consumables are required for what is essentially a straight forward job.
This time I've chosen Wilko semi-synthetic oil in the recommended grade of 10W-40 and a MANN filter.

Found in a discarded bucket of "guy stuff." Strikes me like it may be a special purpose wheel or gear puller, but I'm not sure.
