This is what happens when things go wrong.
We are making the part on the left. Material is 3/8 inch square, machined down to 1/4 inch round then threaded. Process takes 45 seconds from start to finish.
Material is fed into the machines 12 feet at a time.
Tool in middle is called a Roller Box Tool. The hole in it's middle is currently closed by the burnt metal. Metal was spinning at 2180 rpm. It got so hot it melted apart from the bar.
And for the first time in 19 yrs, the oil coolant flowing over the working surface caught fire. Solution to the fire..... turn off the supply.
Some days it does not pay to get out of bed!! But this is fixable and the machine is reset and ready for production.
FYI..... the machine is a Brown & Sharpe No. 2G Automatic Screw Machine, built in 1942.
Entry for the 2nd of October. The weapon of choice, buckled up to the Beetle owners' tool of choice - the 13mm socket.
Captured during Tool's performance on the main stage at Coachella. I didn't take my pictures during Tool's set as seeing them is something akin to a spiritual experience for me.
