Autsch, das tut weh!

Ein Salzkristall wirdvon einer Zange gehalten. Normalerweise liegen die beiden Salzkristalle in einem hohen Glaszylinder in dessen Mitte eine große Kerze steht. Am Abend verbreitet die Flamme der Kerze ein wunderschönes sanftes Licht und die Kristalle leuchten wie Edelsteine. Ouch, that hurts!

A salt crystal is held by a pair of tongs. Normally, the two salt crystals lie in a tall glass cylinder with a large candle in the middle. Aïe, ça fait mal !

Un cristal de sel est tenu par une paire de pinces. Normalement, les deux cristaux de sel se trouvent dans un grand cylindre de verre avec une grande bougie au milieu. Le soir, la flamme de la bougie diffuse une belle lumière douce et les cristaux brillent comme des pierres précieuses.

Panfried Steak

 

Garlic and herb marinade:

Stir together, 1/4 cup olive oil, two minced cloves of garlic and your favorite choice of herbs, about 1 teaspoon each of: dried rosemary, dried oregano, dried thyme, dried basil and sea salt.

Sprinkle the steak generously with ground black pepper.

Rub all the ingredients on both sides of the steak. Wrap in plastic wrap or put in a plastic bag to seal flavors.

Leave in the fridge for at least 30 minutes or longer.

 

Heat a pan and add a tablespoon of oil.

Start frying the steak on its narrow side first, by standing it with tongs or a fork. This ensures that it will render some of the beef fat.

All over Uzbekistan, simple bread is a companion to lots of meals. In Bukhara, we found an old baker who was very kind an open to us foreign visitors. We were allowed to film and talk to him and his nephew while they were at work.

The traditional way is to prepare the dough, wet it and place it inside the oven. When done, the nephew in this case takes it down with the tongs. More dishes are prepared liks this, e.g. samsa.

 

Überall in Usbekistan ist einfaches gebackenes Brot ein ständiger Begleiter bei vielen Gerichten. In Buchara fanden wir einen alten Bäcker, der sehr nett und offen zu uns ausländischen Besuchern war. Wir durften filmen, fotografierten und mit ihm und seinem Neffen während der Arbeit sprechen.

Die traditionelle Herstellung ist so, dass der fertige Teig angefeuchtet wird und im Offen an die Wand geklebt wird. Ist er fertig gebacken, nimmt der Neffe sie mit der Greifzange herunter.

Einige weitere Gerichte werden so ähnlich hergestellt, z.B. Samsa.

The first tongs belong to the Egyptians. Tongs likely began as simple wooden tongs and evolved over time, as early as 3000 BC, into bronze rods. Over time, they evolved into what we now know as modern tongs. An Egyptian wall painting from 1450 BC depicts a crucible between two metal rods.

Spaghetti tongs, a small blue blinking light (for the key ring), a white paper and a little LED torch.

When the sun finally came out today I had only just finished my 'shadow' captures, which would have been much easier with bright sunlight than trying to keep the lights in place, focus on the point and keep everything balanced ;)

But this challenge is still a lot of fun.

The faïence of Quimper: Hand-made and hand-painted pottery are produced at the centre of Henriot-Quimper, which is open to the public, as is the Musée de l'Alambic.

 

Gâteau à l’orange. Orange Cake

1 cup Crisco

1.5 cups granulated sugar

zest from 1 orange

4 large eggs

¼ cup undiluted, frozen orange juice concentrate, thawed

1 tsp. vanilla extract

½ c. almond milk

2.5 c. flour

½ tsp. baking powder

½ tsp. baking soda

1 pinch salt

-Orange marmalade (optional)

-Candied Orange Slices

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour 2 9-inch round cake pans.

Cream together the Crisco and the sugar until it's fluffy. Add the orange zest.

Add the eggs, orange juice, and vanilla, and beat until the eggs are incorporated.

Combine the flour, baking powder, baking soda and salt in a separate container. Add the flour mixture and the almond milk, beating until just combined.

Divide the batter equally between the cake pans.

Bake just until a cake tester comes out clean -- about 25-30 minutes.

Let cool in the pan on a rack for about 10 minutes, then remove cakes from pans.

Let cool thoroughly on a rack before icing and decorating.

 

If you wish to accentuate the orange taste, spread some orange marmalade between layers before adding the icing.

 

Orange Butter Cream

1 cup (2 sticks) butter, softened (or dairy-free margarine)

3-4 cups of powdered sugar, preferably sifted

zest from 1 orange

3 T orange juice concentrate

2 T fresh lemon juice

 

Beat the butter until creamy, and slowly add the sugar until the preferred consistency.

Beat in the orange juice and zest and the lemon juice. Adjust seasonings to taste, adding more powdered sugar to increase thickness.

 

Candied Orange Slices

 

2 cups water

2 cups granulated sugar

10 orange slices

 

In a medium saucepan, combine water and sugar. Bring to a boil, add orange slices and simmer for 10 minutes.

Remove orange slices with tongs. Let cool completely before decorating the cake.

  

A modern day hay rake … can really twist the a 'hay-day' away!

I have been wanting to experiment with polarized light for some time now, and finally got the chance. These are salad tongs backlit with polarized light and filtered with a circular polarizer. The frame represents a span of 3¼ - inches across.

Eastern prickly pear makes a nice little focal point in a small border, in my case along the waterfall, needs some cutting back after they finished blooming,

Eastern prickly pear tends to spread open and low as it grows, Use caution when working with any cactus. even the young, fuzzy looking seedlings can stab. Rose gloves, tweezers and kitchen tongs will come in handy.

I use the long barbecue utensils to cut them back.

Those flowers never stop blooming and they are beautiful I think!
