I pulled the ABS sensor out (had to destroy it in the process after 14 years of corrosion). With the sensor removed, I was able to inspect the tone ring by slowly rotating the CV joint and peering through the hole. The tone ring appears to be fine (no cracks, no signs of slippage) so a new sensor should do the trick.
