A close look at the band reveals the letters ABRE. I've never noticed that before and after a search I found out that it is Spanish for OPEN, which is also imprinted on the opposite side. Apparently the hope is if the bird is found dead the band will be opened to reveal a toll free number, 1-800-327-BAND valid in Canada, the United States and Mexico to report the find.

Dusk. With more frontal day lighting, the mood is quite different from eve lighting. The area has quite a few vendors for these Chinese bbq eats, and they seem to have good business. This vendor has a toll free number for take out! These days, though, the foods have "added ingredients" to improve colour and flavour, so true tradition is gone. The problem for me is I am allergic to many of these ingredients, so unfortunately do not consume.

Our big dog Glory was extremely ill for the first time ever. Without going into the gory details, she became very weak at one point, not even able to keep water down and we didn't think she would make it. She's only 4 years old and very trim and active. It turned out to be a bad batch of dog food. I had purchased a different brand of dog food when my usual was out of stock. Only Glory ate it but picky Bean would not. The food is -- Purina ONE Beyond -- their premium and supposedly natural, health conscious recipe. It sounds good on paper and the ingredient list is very impressive but the reality is something different.
Checking online revealed some very disturbing things...recalls of dog and cat food, recalls of soy products used in pet foods due to contamination and hundreds of complaints for Purina dog and cat food in the past few months alone. And very sad and tragic stories...pets were dieing. They were getting sick, exactly like Glory, recovering and then going back on the food! These unfortunate people didn't suspect it could be the food. It was heartbreaking.
My daughter was distraught and when Glory was at the very worst she took it upon herself to send Purina a message via twitter "Purina you bastards, you're killing my dog, how do you put this crap in the stores!!!" I asked her not to send any more messages to large corporations like that without telling me first but what was done was done. She received a lot of replies from people who felt the same way - And minutes later a reply from good old Purina. "We care please call us at our toll free number..."
I put a call in to Purina that morning, I was told they have not had any complaints about the food. I said come on, there are hundreds if not thousands of complaints online in recent months, do you mean to tell me, mine is actually the first complaint to Purina, ever?!! He replied, it was the first complaint that HE personally had received THAT DAY! I didn't need that kind of doubletalk or free coupons. I just want you not to put garbage in a bag labeled dog food. Good luck Purina. I hope the information I gave you helps you solve your problem, but I doubt it.
Glory is now doing well and I'm just happy I realized it was the food and stopped giving it to her. My kids have a new appreciation for their dogs and how fragile life is, so that is one good thing to come from this ordeal. I'm sorry this is so long but maybe it will help save a few pets. If your pet suddenly becomes sick please consider the food.

I've got a series of images just for the "One Letter" group on flickr, and for those who use the flickr application called "Spell with flickr". This is from a casino sign in Laughlin, Nevada. BUT, I introduce it here to those who may be interested in my trip to Los Angles, California right now.
So, is the C for Crazy California or for Crazy cobalt?
On this long 7 hour drive from Phoenix, Arizona over west to La, I keep seeing things that seem improbable. Maybe my California flickr friends will be able to shed some light on these observations:
1. In Blythe, CA, I got gas at an ARCO Am/PM gas station for only ("only" !!!!) $2.77per gallon. This, of course, is horrifying, but around this place there were at least 6 other gas stations that advertised the gas price as $3.33! I knew the gas would be higher in California over Arizona, so I sought to buy it far enough outside of LA at the least price. And I heard on the radio that the $3.00 per gallon mark would be reached soon. But really, how can there be a 56 cent per gallon price difference within blocks of competitors? Something seems really skewed....
2. Where is that sign you read on trucks, saying "How's my driving", and giving a toll free number to call? Let me tell you, I needed it around Desert Palms, CA on I-10 for the driver of a double-trailer semi truck who tailgated like a crazy man and was a great danger on the road!
3. Signs were frequent on the Interstate, with speed as 70 mph, but there were other signs that said "trucks/trailers 55 mph". So how is it that every truck on the road was going 70 to 75 mph? Let me tell you,it is not fun being behind or alongside a double-trailer semi in strong wind where you are fighting for control and so is that driver.
4. I've rarely driven with such wind conditions as the stretch between Indio and Palm Springs. No signs about "dangerous cross currents", or "blowing dust" there, but it was like shafts of wind shear for about 30 miles, and so much dust that the wind threw down blankets of dust violently. Is this a rare event?
5. In Coachilla, CA I went to a Carl's restaurant about midnight, and was told I could not order for their computers are always down then for 10 minutes. I offered to pay cash and exact price, but the answer was "no" because no order could be taken without a computer. I was thinking, what happened to pencil and paper, or use of a calculator! Really, the food and employees were present, but the concept of taking an order "rote" was beyond the staff.
6. With an unfortunate name, the Morongo Casino, with its huge neon displays, always strikes me as "Moron Go to Casino"....
7. Remember that rotten truck driver I mentioned earlier? I was glad to see him pulled over for a truck scales inspection around the "29 Palms" exit. Then, 50 miles later he caught up with me and yes, he was speeding up and slowing down, with tailgating me and others once again. Watch out for trucks from GI Trucking Company!
8. I passed the exit for "Running Springs, CA". Realistically, could a "spring" not always be considered as "running"?
Ah, these are just the random observations of a traveler in the US. I am sure that the US of A has far more idiosyncracies that other countries, right?
This is kind of cool. Last week there was a cool video put out about Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters and that if you are gifted they wanted you to attend. It was a neat little video done in 80's style.
At the end of the video (linked below) there is a toll free number displayed. I thought, why not I will call it. So I did and there is a cool message on there, but at the end it asked for your name and address after the tone. So I stated my name and address. Well today I got a cool postcard in the mail from Xavier's School For Gifted Youngsters.
That evening I played the message for Rich, it was the same message but they no longer were asking for names and addresses. My guess is there were too many people leaving messages.
I feel lucky to have been able to get this collector's piece.

This photo/art of mine has been chosen by Narsad ArtWorks for a Holiday/Christmas card this coming season. <------ this sentence written in late 2007. They are an offshoot of NARSAD, the National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Affective Disorders. One hundred percent of their profit goes for reseach on brain disorders that are often referred to as mental illness. I don't like for people to feel spammed, so if you want their toll-free number, flickr mail me, and I'll give it to you. There is a whole little catalogue of pretty work done by people with various brain disorders.
I removed the information about price and size and number and page on catalogue, on December 20, 2009, because I don't have the most current information on their availability, etc. It is a very fine cause. They have already paid me to use my picture, and I make no more money whether they sell one box of them or thousands of boxes of them. All I would get would be the pleasure of seeing them sell and go to a great cause.
The photo itself was a huge Douglas Fir Tree sticking up through low-lying clouds with silver and yellow/gold lining on the clouds. I took the picture handheld with a Sony Mavica FD-71 sub-megapixel camera seven years ago. I put it in my ArcSoft 1 or 2 program, which is what I had at the time, and I played around with saturation and confetti, splash, oil and whatever else I thought was fun and pretty. I did a whole bunch of versions, and called my series "Christmas Tree in Heaven", but I named this one Fuschsia Falls because of the colors that seemed to be flowing over the clouds. The clouds now look like snow with confetti on it, and the tree only shows the top of the tree sticking out. Later I will post the picture I started with, down in my comments. Also, there is a picture they bought about 7 years ago, (updated to 9 years on December 20, 2009) and it has done very well on Flickr. I'll try to post a little thumbnail of it too.
For the Exhibited and Sold Works (Pool), the only difference between this and they one they used is I sent them a higher resolution, and they may have cropped a bit to fit the card to 5 x 7.

An Ounce of Prevention. (Read the tags! Read everything! This thing is chock full of entertainment! And information, too. :P)
This thing was Photoshopped to hell and back, and I did this for a variety of reasons: 1) to isolate me from the rest of the image, because 2) I wanted to saturate that shirt all to hell (I think I did a reasonably acceptable job of making it look totally obnoxious :P LOL — actually, I wanted the shirt and the background to be as vibrant as possible), and 3) I wanted to experiment with a different method of masking, using some instruction I'd found in Ben Willmore's fabulous book, Adobe Photoshop CS2 Studio Techniques. When viewed at full-resolution, the result wasn't perfect, but it also wasn't too bad considering that it was my first effort using the Extraction Filter. Good stuff! ^.^
I also learned a technique that will make the processing of any future images in which I apply a texture to my face much, much easier, and that's a good thing! :D

Now, some travel advice for my U.S. contacts. There are several things you should do before traveling abroad. Much of what follows you can learn at www.usps.com/passport, so if you read nothing else, at least read items 4-10. However, I've included in items 1-3 a few tips that neither the State Department nor the U.S. Postal Service will tell you until it's too late, so you might want to consider perusing this list if you've any upcoming plans to travel abroad.
1. Make sure you have a valid passport. U.S. passports are valid for 10 years from the date of issue. If you need a new passport, it's best to apply a few months before you plan to travel. It generally takes 5-6 weeks for an application to be processed, but applying early ensures that your plans aren't ruined by any delays in processing your application.
2. If the date of your passport's expiration is less than 6 months away, apply for a new one. Some countries will not grant you a visa if your passport is that close to expiration.
3. If you need a new passport, you'll need the following when applying:
Passport Application:
* Passport Application Form DS-11 (unsigned; you will sign it when you present it to the postal clerk).
Proof of U.S. Citizenship (one of the following):
* Previous U.S. passport (this works best! and, surprisingly, even an expired passport will work better than a birth certificate—see below)
* Certified U.S. birth certificate (I learned when I applied that my birth certificate was not good enough to prove my citizenship, even though it had been signed by the Clerk of County in the State and County of my birth; I was even told that most birth certificates are not acceptable... supposedly because they're not certified, whatever the hell that's supposed to mean—personally, I think it's just a conspiracy to make the passport application process as difficult and as inconvenient as possible... typical government bullshit)
* Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth
* Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
Proof of Identity (provide one of the following):
* Certificate of Naturalization or Citizenship
* Current, valid driver's license
* Government ID
* Military ID
* For minors under 14 years of age, each child must appear in person and both parents or legal guardians must present evidence of identity
Two Identical Passport Photos (taken at a location other than the Post Office; you can get these easily and affordably at your nearest Kinko's):
* 2 x 2 inches in size
* Taken within the past 6 months
* Colour preferred
* Full-face, front view with a plain white or off-white background (Kinko's knows exactly what to do and has everything set up for these; just tell them what you want and they'll get it done)
* Normal street attire, no hats or headgear (I also suggest a clear complexion, and I'm very serious because my face was all aflame with my psoriasis when I got mine done; passport photos are as bad as those on a driver's license, and there's no need to make it any worse than it already is)
* Select Post Office locations offer passport photo services, but there is an additional $15 fee (this is no more expensive than the fee charged by Kinko's, so it makes no difference where you go to get this done)
Passport fees:
* U.S. Department of State Passport Fee: $55 age 16 and older/$40 age 15 or younger
* Security Surcharge Fee: $12 all ages
* USPS Acceptance Fee: $30 all ages
4. Once your passport arrives, photocopy the page with your signature and photo. This is just in case you lose your passport. It provides you with papers to show local authorities, if necessary. This is unlikely, but why tempt fate? It also gives the U.S. Embassy/Consulate vital information needed if they need to help you in replacing a lost passport. When traveling, keep this separate from your passport. If you lose this along with your passport, then what's the point, right? Duh!
5. Along with your passport, you'll receive a "Passport Services — Information Card." Fill it out with your passport number and expiration date. On the back of this card are several phone numbers, and the URL for the State Department, so that you can locate your nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate, if need be. Keep this separate, too, along with that page you photocopied in item #4.
6. It's best to register certain personal items with Customs before departing the U.S., lest you be forced to pay Import Taxes when you re-enter the country. Register items such as cameras, lenses, any camera accessories that are high priced and have identifying serial numbers, iPods (or any MP3 player), laptop computers. Go to this page at the Customs and Border Patrol web site, and scroll down to find and download CBP Form 4457. Fill this form out, then take it to the Customs office at your local airport to have it stamped and signed by a Customs official. You can do this prior to your departure (which is what I plan to do for all my new camera gear), or you can leave extra early for the airport on the date of your departure and get it done before you board your plane.
7. Call your credit card companies so that they can put a travel alert on your accounts for the dates that you'll be out of the country. Credit cards and ATM cards have pretty much made traveler's cheques obsolete. Most banks charge only a 1% fee for currency conversion when making purchases or withdrawals abroad. Also, find the phone numbers on the backs of your credit cards, and write them down. Keep them along with that passport page you photocopied. This way, if your credit cards get lost or stolen, you have contact information so that you can have the cards cancelled and prevent any charges against your account. In fact, when you call to notify your credit card companies of your travel dates, they'll provide you with a toll-free number to call when out of country. Remember that you'll have to use the prefix for international dialing of the country you're visiting when calling the U.S. from abroad. This can vary, so check before you leave which prefix will be necessary in the countries you'll be visiting.
8. Because I love to travel, I made sure I bought a quad-band phone (mine's a Nokia) from my provider (T-Mobile). Quad-band phones work anywhere in the world. If you have one, call your provider and let them know of your travel plans, this way they can make sure your account is set up to allow for your phone to be used overseas. How much are calls overseas? With T-Mobile, my calls are 99¢ per minute, and SMSs (text messages) are 35¢ per message. Other carriers' charges are probably very similar.
9. Have fun and, for crying out loud, try the local cuisine! (And since my girlfriend mentioned it, I'll add that you should also try local drinks, too, alcoholic or otherwise. I'll also add that whenever I've gone to Portugal, I've never had as much Diet Coke as I do when I'm home. :P) There's nothing more ridiculous, in my opinion, than Americans who travel abroad and then spend all their time looking for a McDonald's. Sheesh! I've got a story on that subject alone, but I'll save that for another time. Yes, there are people who do this, believe it or not. When I travel abroad, I ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to eat anything American!
10. Respect the people and the culture of the place you are visiting. I have met untold numbers of Americans (military and civilian alike) who have the most arrogant attitudes, thinking things like America is the best and everyone should cater to their every whim and desire. (Believe it or not, there ARE things about other cultures that are better than things you'll find here in the U.S. We are NOT the centre of the fucking universe, but that's another personal rant I'll save for later.) Even if you do believe such things, try to swallow that shit for the duration of your trip, and I promise you it'll be a far more pleasant experience.
If you do all of the above, then you won't be pulling your hair out like me in my silly photo for today. :P :D LOL!

Earlier this week I wrote a blog post about Netflix's new Watch Now service being, well, out of service, last Saturday night. A couple of folks called me a cry baby for being a bit worked up over having my Friday Night Lights episode pulled out from underneath my eyes right at a very tense part of the show (ok, so how tense can Friday Night Lights get right?). In the post though I worried that Netflix's Watch Now technical difficulties last weekend might be a harbinger of things to come.
Unfortunately it looks like this Saturday night Netflix's Watch Now service is dead once again. Note to Netflix, if you want to screw around with your servers, do it on a Monday afternoon when nobody's watching TV anyways. Saturday night is of course probably just about the worst time for Netflix's service to go down.
The photograph above is what my screen looks like right now. On the plus side Netflix does seem to offer a toll-free number to contact them (866-579-7113). On the negative side that toll-free number has been busy for the past 20 minutes. Netflix's customer service number on their website has also been busy for the past 20 minutes as well. Of course nowhere on Netflix's site is any indication that they are having these technical difficulties but a quick Twitter search confirms that I'm not the only one who's not going to be able to watch my Friday Night Light's tonight.
As much as I love me my Netflix Watch Now, I'm beginning to worry a bit that their service may end up being a whole lot worst than your cable or satellite provider. At a bear minimum Netflix ought to post on their website that they are having problems with their service. Or if this is going to be an every Saturday night sort of problem, maybe they ought to think about hiring that Frank Cares Twitter guy from over at Comcast so he can get chummy with all the people complaining on Twitter about this outage right now.

Racial hoax causes PR headache for McDonald’s

An online hoax that falsely suggests McDonald's discriminates against African-American customers is causing a PR headache for the Golden Arches.
Over the weekend, the photograph above circulated widely on the internet. The image shows what looks like an official McDonald's notice in the window of a restaurant, telling customers that blacks will be charged $1.50 extra "as an insurance measure due in part to a recent string of robberies."
Many internet users retweeted the photo, using the words "Seriously McDonald's," to express their disapproval of the burger chain.
In response, McDonald's sent a tweet of its own on Saturday: "That pic is a senseless & ignorant hoax McD's values ALL our customers. Diversity runs deep in our culture on both sides of the counter."
But that clearly wasn't enough to clear things up, because Twitter users continued to send out the picture, with that same message of condemnation: "Seriously McDonald's." Indeed, so many people sent "Seriously McDonald's" Tweets that the phrase became a leading entry on Twitter's trend list.
That led to a second, blunter McTweet, on Sunday: "That Seriously McDonalds picture is a hoax."
The latest pushback effort seems to have helped keep the photo from spreading too much further--but there's no telling how many people out there still think the photo is for real.
This is hardly the only recent barrage of negative publicity for the burger behemoth--some of it more justified. McDonalds CEO Jim Skinner recently was forced to defend the company's renewed use of the Ronald McDonald mascot to appeal to children, after critics said the restaurant's fat-laden burgers and fries endanger kids' health.
It's not clear who created the hoax image. It appears to have first showed up on the popular 4chan message board, and it was posted last year on an anti-McDonald's blog.
But there's no doubt it's fake. As some Twitter users have pointed out, the toll-free number given at the bottom of the sign is actually the number for ... Kentucky Fried Chicken.

January 29, 2017- New York City, NY- Governor Andrew Cuomo announces legislation protecting the rights of transportation workers after a Muslim airline employee was attacked at John F. Deputy Commissioner Hamid Al-Karim and Executive District Health Officer Dr. Abdul Rahim Sherani inaugurated the three-day anti-polio campaign by administering anti-polio drops to the children at DHQ civil hospital Zhob.
Medical Superintendent Dr. Abdul Rehman Miankhail and District Support Officer WHO Shamsullah Tareen were also present on the occasion.
The anti-polio campaign began on June 13th, which continued till June 15th 2011.
After kicking off three-day anti polio drive Deputy Commissioner talking to the journalists said “Disability not only makes life of the affected child miserable but also makes him a burden on his family. We would continue to strive hard to completely eliminate the menace of Polio from our society.
He directed the District Health Department to use all available resources to make the drive successful. He stressed upon doctors and media to make the masses aware of importance of polio vaccination. The parents to get their children vaccinated without any fear as it would prevent their children from disability for the entire life, he asked.
EDO health Dr. Abdul Rahim Sherani briefed on the occasion “We have a target of 45215 children for administering anti polio vaccine. In this regard total 138 mobile teams have been constituted to administer polio drops to children at their doorstep. 41 special centers, 5 transit points on Quetta road, Dera Ismail Khan Road, Murgha Kibzai road and Waziristan road and 3 border points have been established in the district to administer polio drops to children at 22 Union Councils of the district. He maintained.
He further said “Polio is an extremely hazardous disease that paralyses the children for entire life. He emphasized the need to ensure that no eligible child is missed during the current round as Pakistan inches close to achieving polio-free status. Health department teams would visit door to door to administer polio drops to children up to 5 years of age against the fatal disease in every nook and corner of the district”. He added.
“Clerics should cooperate with anti-polio teams in their noble task to vaccinate their children against the disease and save our generation from the fatal virus and disability. Parents should feed anti polio drops to their children so that this menace can be eradicated from our country”. He appealed.
District Support Officer WHO Shamsullah Tareen requested to the people to extend their full pledge cooperation towards the vaccination teams and feed anti-polio drops to their children of under five years age.
