They say the eyes are the windows to your soul...

It was a delight watching this fledgling Burrowing Owl as he climbed out of his underground home and investigated the surrounding area. I got a quick shot of him as he pushed through the grass in search of a bit of adventure and a tasty bug. Life is Good : )

Burrowing Owls are small, sandy colored owls with bright-yellow eyes. They live underground in burrows they’ve dug themselves or taken over from a prairie dog, ground squirrel, or tortoise.

They live in grasslands, deserts, and other open habitats, where they hunt mainly insects and rodents. Their numbers have declined sharply with human alteration of their habitat and the decline of prairie dogs and ground squirrels.

Before laying eggs, Burrowing Owls carpet the entrances to their homes with animal dung, which attracts dung beetles and other insects that the owls then catch and eat. They may also collect bottle caps, metal foil, cigarette butts, paper scraps, and other bits of trash at the entrance, possibly signifying that the burrow is occupied.

Burrowing Owls have a higher tolerance for carbon dioxide than other birds—an adaptation found in other burrowing animals, which spend long periods underground, where the gas can accumulate to higher levels than found above ground.

Unlike most owls in which the female is larger than the male, the sexes of the Burrowing Owl are the same size.

Burrowing Owls often stow extra food to ensure an adequate supply during incubation and brooding. When food is plentiful, the birds' underground larders can reach prodigious sizes. One cache observed in Saskatchewan in 1997 contained more than 200 rodents.

That was the claim made by a friend who was fiercely holding on to a position of faith. It is generally true, that at a certain point we just must take a position, subjectively, willingly or not. However, what when these various subjective absolutisms collide with each other? The Talibans are "subjective absolutists" for example. Then, my friend says, we need to exercise our individual absolutism with tolerance and kindness. Sounds good. But where do tolerance and kindness come from? Neither Christianity nor Islam have a convincing record when it comes to the treatment of others or of people thinking differently. According to the logic of both religions, only God is absolute - man is relative. This basic principle makes a 'tolerant' exercise of subjective absolutism really difficult. In other words, the profound problem here is not subjectivity, we all have got that, the problem is "absolutism". We all hold positions - absolute they are not.

International trade is prohibited by the Wildlife Protection Act in Pakistan. Snow Leopard Foundation (SLF) in Pakistan conducts research on the current status of Himalayan brown bears in the Pamir Range in Gilgit-Baltistan, a promising habitat for the bears and a wildlife corridor connecting bear populations in Pakistan to central Asia. The project also intends to investigate the conflicts humans have with the bears, while promoting tolerance for bears in the region through environmental education. SLF received funding from the Prince Bernhard Nature Fund and Alertis. Unlike its American cousin, which is found in good numbers, the Himalayan brown bear is critically endangered. They are poached for their fur and claws for ornamental purposes and internal organs for use in medicines. They are killed by shepherds to protect their livestock and their home is destroyed by human encroachment. In Himachal, their home is the Kugti and Tundah wildlife sanctuaries and the tribal Chamba region. Their estimated population is just 20 in Kugti and 15 in Tundah. The tree bearing the state flower of Himachal — buransh — is the favourite hangout of this bear. Due to the high value of the buransh tree, it is being commercially cut causing further destruction to the brown bear’s home. The Himalayan brown bear is a critically endangered species in some of its range with a population of only 150-200 in Pakistan. The populations in Pakistan are slow reproducing, small, and declining because of habitat loss, fragmentation, poaching, and bear baiting.

Part 3 of 3: Badger and Coyote have settled down and turned their attention to the photographer, who has by now slithered out of his rolling red Toyota blind and is crawling through the snow and mud toward them. Coyote wasn't putting up with that. She made a quick exit, stage right, keeping a wary eye on the intruder. How close did Badger allow me to approach? Tune in tomorrow.

As for the mutual tolerance of these two predators for each other, this is the most companionable moment I've seen (we're talking species now, not individuals). They have a long, well documented association as hunters, one often following the other on their rounds, and there must be mutual benefit from this or it would not happen. I've witnessed this behaviour on many occasions. But I've never seen two hanging out like this - very close and relatively calm. Nature continues to surprise me.

My edit of NYC street art 'Tolerance', from renowned Brazilian artist Eduardo Kobra, created in his signature, harlequin-pattern, Technicolor style. Painted on the side of the Chelsea Square Market, the image features the profiles of Mother Teresa and Mahatma Gandhi, facing each other, in a tribute to their roles as two of the world’s greatest humanitarians.

Atalopedes campestris (Hesperiidae) called Sachem in the United States and Canada is a small grass skipper butterfly with wingspan of 35–41 mm (1+3⁄8–1+5⁄8 in). This skipper is common in the southern United States ranging south through Mexico and Central America to Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador, and Brazil. It had been observed that the sachem expanded its range northward rapidly during the beginning of the 21st century. A study by Crozier shows that this expansion is due to the winter warming trend of climate change rather than evolution of cold tolerance for this species. The host plants used by the sachem caterpillar are various grasses including Bermuda grass, hairy crabgrass, red fescue, St. Augustine grass, Indian goosegrass, seashore saltgrass, and Imperata cylindrica.

====================

The Mallard duck (Anas platyrhynchos) is arguably the most familiar and widespread duck in the world, found throughout North America, Europe, and Asia. It is a large, adaptable "dabbling duck" often seen in city parks, ponds, rivers, and marshes.

Appearance and Identification

Mallards exhibit strong sexual dimorphism (males and females look different):

Male (Drake): In breeding plumage, the male is instantly recognizable by its glossy, iridescent green head and neck, a bright yellow bill, and a crisp white collar. Its body is gray, sandwiched between a chestnut-brown breast and a black rear with characteristic curled central tail feathers.

Female (Hen): The female is more camouflaged to protect her nest. Her plumage is a mottled and streaky brown and tan all over, with an orange and black bill.

Both Sexes: A key identifying feature for both sexes, especially in flight, is the iridescent blue wing patch (called a speculum) bordered by a white band on both the leading and trailing edges.

Habitat and Behavior

Mallards are highly adaptable and thrive in almost any freshwater habitat, from wild wetlands to urban park ponds.

Dabbling: They are dabbling ducks, meaning they feed primarily on the water's surface or by tipping their bodies forward to graze on underwater plants, rarely diving completely.

Diet: They are omnivores with a diverse diet, including seeds, aquatic plants, grains, insects, snails, and crustaceans.

Vocalization: The classic, loud "quack" is exclusively the sound of the female mallard. Males make a quieter, softer, rasping sound.

Adaptability: Mallards are the ancestors of nearly all domestic duck breeds and their tolerance of human presence makes them common visitors to urban areas where they often accept food from people.

. ... Une aigrette garzette et un héron cendré.

. ... Photo prise au Jardin Botanique de Bordeaux.

A macro view of a dowel screw from a pair of eye glasses sitting atop a metal ruler, taken for the Macro Mondays group theme, "My Closest." The screw measures 5mm in length.

The hardest part of this shoot was getting that tiny screw to stay put on the ruler where I wanted it (I won't get into the time I dropped it on my carpet floor and the adventure that ensued trying to find it!).

Strobist/technical info:

The scene was illuminated by two LEDs and two Nikon SB900 speedlights. The two SB900s were placed at 9- and 3-o'clock, one-foot above and three-feet away from the screw. They were fired in Manual mode @ 1⁄16 power through Neewer 24" x 24" soft boxes. A white Led light panel was placed at 12-o'clock and the blue LED of a Coast TX10 Quad Color flashlight was placed overhead (for the blue highlights and background). Both were exposed for 1/10 s.

The SB900s were triggered by three PocketWizard Plus X flash triggers.

Lens: Vega 11U 50mm f2.8 attached to a bellows extended 123mm.

Nothing political, just a standardized color code on a resistor indicating its resistance value and the percentage of variation in that value. Most resistors have four stripes; some may have a fifth stripe for additional data. A single black stripe (denoting, as oxymoronic as it might seem, a “resistor” without any resistance) is just jumper wire in a resistor-like package for special purposes.

On a typical resistor, the first two stripes indicate the significat digits, in this instance, brown for the digit one and black for the digit zero; to form the number 10. The third stripe multiplies the two significant digits by a power of 10 (1, 10, 100, 1,000, and so on) to arrive at the final figure; in this case, orange for 1,000 times 10, for a value of 10 kilohms, or 10,000 ohms. The red band indicates the tolerance, plus or minus two percent for this part.

The resistor body is about ¼" (6.35mm) long, the smallest item I have photographed in a while.

A Tricolored Heron tolerates me passing by, getting only slightly distracted.

They belong to one family and therefore seem them on top of each other.

Given the voracity with which this calf was feeding it is no wonder the mom has such a look of impatient tolerance on her face! No doubt very close to being fully weaned, she did not allow it to feed for very long. Still, it was a very tender moment to witness.
