A pair of old Co-op tokens, with strong sidelighting to emphasise the lettering....

This is both sides of the same token but they were shot with my famous "I don't need no steenking tripod" technique so they aren't the same size. Slow learner, I guess.

Sonora, California The bank building replaced the original one story building in 1928. The token was likely issued shortly after the new building opened for business. The bank moved to a new location in 1978 and the original building is now home to the Candy Vault. The inset photograph shows the original bank vault is still in use as a candy display.

This was probably the most fun exhibit/installation I attended at the Art Basel Miami events. It was the Faile & Bast Deluxx Fluxx Arcade with free video games, pinball and foosball. And free alcohol! All the games were free and the token machine was just for commemorative coins. I stopped some lady from putting in a $20 bill and told her everything was free. She was happy she didn't lose her $20.

Imagine if your boss started minting their own money. Now imagine if they started paying you with it. Now imagine if only certain shops accepted that money, whilst it was worthless everywhere else.

This sounds ludicrous, even criminal to us. But this was exactly the situation that many 19th century factory workers found themselves in.

This copper twopence coin is an example of this unofficial money. It is known as a provincial token and was produced by John Henrickson, the owner of Lemmonsly Mill, near Lichfield in the late 18th to early 19th century.

Provincial tokens were coins minted by private individuals during the late 18th century in response to a chronic lack of small denomination coins in Britain. This shortage was caused by the effective ceasing of penny production by the Royal Mint in the 1660s.

Facing a shortage of low denomination coins with which to pay their workers, mill owners such as Henrickson produced these provincial tokens. The workers could then use these tokens in lieu of official coinage with local merchants and traders. These traders could then return the tokens to Henrickson in exchange for larger denomination, official currency. In this case, 120 of these tokens could be exchanged with Henrickson for one pound.

The obverse of the coin features an image of Lemmonsly cotton mill. In exergue beneath the image is the value: "TWO-PENNY TOKEN". Surrounding the image is the legend: "JOHN HENRICKSON LEMMONSLY MILL NEAR LITCHFIELD".

The reverse of the coin features a shield bearing the coat of arms of the City of Lichfield, consisting of three decapitated soldiers lying before Lichfield Cathedral. A lion's head is located at the base of the shield, whilst two floral branches border the shield. Around the edge of the reverse is the legend: "ONE POUND NOTE FOR 120 TOKENS".

My photo-summer wouldn't have been complete without a late-August shot of some sunflowers. It was hot, hot, hot that day, so I included the burning sun in the frame to give everybody a taste of that.

To make it slightly different than my (and everybody else's) previous sunflower shots, I went a bit crazy with the processing -- for my standards, that is. I also chose a square crop (I felt like copying Brad's idea).

Kaye Winks has been a token black person for as long as she can remember. In this solo show, she shares her hilarious and often cringeworthy adventures in being that lone black person in a world of white.

Token enjoyed a sold out run at The Second City Chicago in June and will be performed at UCB Los Angeles and the United Solo Theater Festival in New York City in August/September 2017.

Kaye Winks is a stage and screen actress, writer, part-time funny person and full-time cat person. A proud member of SAG-AFTRA, she trained at the Moscow Art Theater School in association with the American Repertory Theater and Harvard University. She also studied physical comedy and clown with world renowned French master teacher, Philippe Gaulier. She eats all her vegetables and considers 2017 a great year.

In the 1970's New York's graffiti writers battled the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) which sought to eliminate graffiti on the Subway system. One crew enlisted the MTA to help them:

"Writers 'borrowed' whatever suited their fancy from other sources. in the case of the MTA [Mad Transit Artists] crew, this extended to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's own initials, which were already painted on every train as part of their "official" design. Thereby, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority got up for the MTA crew" --- from "Taking the Train: how Graffiti Art Became an Urban Crisis in New York City" by Joe Austin. So - with all this history, is it significant that someone is putting up stickers in the design of NY subway tokens? Could be, or they could be selling some edgy toothpaste or something. I don't know.

Marchmont street foundling tokens

They are actually accurate representations of tokens from the nearby Foundling Museum - The museum remembers for posterity the Foundling Hospital, set up in the mid 18th century as a home for unwanted babies who were then raised and educated by the institution. Some of these children were left a token by their mothers as a remembrance which – sadly – they were never given.

Broken-down Soviet war equipment still dots the Panjshir valley here and there; I'm not sure if the ones gathered here were supposed to have been personally captured by Massoud, or what.

Should be "Singles' Party", shouldn't it? And who can tell what a treff point is...?

When I was in Tbilisi last year, I saw that a Wendy's restaurant would be opening soon. This year, I got to overcome my initial disappointment, by indulging in a delicious cheese burger. Also, they had a Wendy's arcade on the second floor. This was one of the tokens. I played some basketball and even pushed a kid away when he tried to play with me for free
