from one of those make-it-yourself machines that used to be everywhere. When I was a kid in the early 60's we would go to the bus station and make them with obscenities on them, thinking we were getting away with something. Come to think of it, if I could find one now, I would probably still do the same thing - - some people never grow up

The New York City Transit Authority first introduced the "Bullseye" tokens on January 1, 1986 when the fare was raised to $1. The metal disc in the centre was to prevent the use of slugs by fare evaders, although that didn't stop the token suckers.

The tokens were used through two more fare increases - $1.15 in 1990 and $1.25 in 1992.

The signaller at Rainford Junction prepares to lower down the token for the single line section to Kirkby to the driver of Northern Class 156, 156 427. The 'Super Sprinter' was forming the 2K66 11:58 Wigan Wallgate to Kirkby service.

Rainford Junction station - built in 1858 - used to be a busy intersection of the Liverpool and Bury Railway, the East Lancashire Railway's Skelmersdale Branch and the St. Helens Railway. However, lines gradually closed during the 1950s and 1960s and by the 1970s the line was down to just the single route between Wigan and Kirkby and the station was renamed plain old "Rainford".

The signal box retains the full "Rainford Junction" name and - along with the semaphores - is a reminder of a much busier railway in times gone by at this location.

Sharples Token

Ref: INV: 16851

Obverse [head]: Decorative pattern at the top and bottom, two four leaf clovers either side of inscription in the centre: T. SHARPLES CONCERT ROOM AND MUSEUM STAR INN CHURCHGATE BOLTON.

Reverse [tails]: Star with seven points inside a wreath.

Biography

This token is from an exciting Victorian Bolton attraction, the Sharples Concert Rooms and Museum, which were located above the Star Inn on Churchgate.

Unfortunately, it is not known how this token entered the museum. The token was found during an inventory of the token collection. However, there are several other tokens like this one in the collection. This is because the Sharples Concert Room and Museum are seen as an important part of the social history of Bolton.

Some interesting facts

The full name of the museum part of the Sharples rooms was ‘Sharples Museum of Curiosities in Nature & Art’, and you can see an original guide to the museum on display when our new Local History Gallery opens in the autumn.

In the guide book to the museum, strange curiosities described include a duck with two heads!

Find out more

There is currently another Sharples token on display in our very own ‘cabinet of curiosity’ located on the ground floor of Bolton Central library to the rear of the library.

My favourite image of the day as 34007 Wadebridge rolls the Pines Express off the viaduct , Fireman with the token out to exchange as the signalman gets into position . All taking place as snow steadily falls .

I've cropped the footbridge to exclude the gallery and removed a lime green bobble hat in the first carriage as well as a little desaturation of the colour for effect

I should also say I had my youngest in my left arm at the time whilst composing with the camera in my left and being aware of 80072 bearing down behind me
