Melle - Wat ik nog altijd nog niet voor de crafter had waren de Duitse 243'ers van DeltaRail. Op zondag 9 oktober besloot ik samen met een maat naar Duitsland te trekken voor deze fraaie trein. Het was die zondag vrij rustig in Duitsland, waardoor DeltaRail goed kon doorrijden. Zo deed deze trein van Berlijn tot aan Melle het ongeveer in 4,5u. Dat is enorm rap voor een goederentrein, zeker in Duitsland. We besloten de trein op te wachten in Melle, om vervolgens daarna de achtervolging in te zetten richting Nederland. Het was helaas de enige goederentrein die we die dag zagen, want andere vervoerders leiden liever hun goederentreinen om via Emmerich vanwege de beperkte capaciteit van Deventer. Omstreeks half 4 passeert de fraaie combi de omgeving van Melle, onderweg naar Bad Bentheim. Hierna zette we de achtervolging in naar Nederland, waar we de trein nog tot 3x toe konden fotograferen!

Marmolada Glacier (Ghiacciaio della Marmolada) is the only glacier in the Italian Dolomites. We took the ‘Funivia Fedaia Marmolada’ up Mount Marmolada to the toe of the glacier. This was part of the front during World War I. There is a lot of history in the area available in small local museums. Although I did not attempt it, associated with the war is the oldest, highest and longest via ferrata in the Dolomites.

Jack was in the yard adjusting sprinklers. He was soaked from head to toe. I was out taking photos of butterflies and birds. However, the most interesting subject in the yard at the time was Jack. So, I turned the camera towards him.
We were engaging in normal conversation as he was working away. Of course, I was click, click, clicking away. Suddenly, Jack looked up and I was caught. I love the fact that after all these years the moment he looks at me, a big grin appears on his face.

I did a bit of research yesterday. This sheep often has dark liquid coming from the slit next to the eye. Sheep don't have a lacrimal gland, they have an infraorbital organ, a gland that produces a substance with unknown purpose. There are three theories about this substance. A: the moor substance, the more dominance. This could really be it. This sheep is the boss. B: the substance smells good (from a sheepical point of view) and could be a self-produced perfume. Maybe that's why my sheep look so befuddled. C: The substance is a self-produced skin-care. Sounds unlikely, but sheep have scent glands between their toes and while I thought that those interdigital glands produce a substance to nourish the keratin part of the toes, I read now, that the interdigital gland has a sexual function too. And I guess the feet smell better.
Unlike other small sandpipers, the Sanderling has no hind toe, and that's how to distinguish them from similar species.

"Long-Toed Lapwing" is a striking and good-looking bird seen in large colonies in the Mabamba Swamp. It gets its name from its exceptionally long toes like the Jacanas and the Coots - Its exceptionally long toes spread out its body weight, allowing it to easily walk across floating lily pads and aquatic vegetation without sinking. The "One-Foot Stir" to forage - it has been documented standing on one foot and stirring the water with the other, a clever trick to coax hidden prey to the surface. David Hume's statue is on the Royal Mile in Edinburgh. People rub his big toe in the hope that some of his intelligence will rub off on them.
I'd herd of him before, but only because of Monty Python's philosopher's song (David Hume could out-consume Schopenhauer and Hegel... I looked it up.) The statue looks like it's been there for a hundred years but it's nearly new - 1996 - and the sculptor is very much alive and sculpting!

Op donderdag 12 juni 2025 werd het spoor weer eens opgezocht. De Rollbahn bevalt tot nu toe goed. Het is vanuit het noorden van Nederland nog redelijk goed te doen qua kilometers. Met een beetje geluk krijg je toch altijd wel interessante treinen voor de lens. Al helemaal als er omleiders via deze route rijden. Deze dag kon ik profiteren van een stremming op de druk bereden hoofdspoorlijn Hamm-Bielefeld-Löhne. Een groot deel van het treinverkeer werd omgeleid via o.a. Münster-Osnabrück. Zodoende werd deze sectie van de Rollbahn vandaag bezocht. De vele omgeleide ICE's krijg je er gewoon cadeau bij ;-).
Nu loopt het op dit deel van de lijn niet over qua bereikbare stekken. Dit heeft o.a. met de begroeiing te maken, maar ook de ligging van de lijnsecties ten opzichte van de zonnestand. Zo heb ik nu ook eens gebruik gemaakt van de bekende stek bij Schollbruch (staat zelfs op Google Maps) die tussen één en drie kan worden bezocht en waar de zon nu hoog genoeg staat.
Die dag werden stekken bij Westbevern, Kattevenne, Schollbruch en Lengerich bezocht. Bij de eerste stek staat inmiddels graan en mais in de velden. In het maisveld was het nog goed te doen en werden zeven goederentrein gespot. Bij Kattevenne werden vlakbij het station en de silo’s drie fraaie goederentreinen gepakt. ’s Middags bij Schollbruch werden vijf goederentreinen gefotografeerd. Tevreden werd naar de laatste stek van de dag bij Lengerich gereden.
Het was nog een hele uitdaging om op deze stek om de gewenste foto te maken. Een combinatie van de kerk links, de trein tot aan het viaduct verderop, het bordje “Halt für Rangierfahrten” en een onvlak en aflopend terrein maakten dat ik heel wat pogingen heb gedaan om mijn trap goed neer te zetten en ook op de juist fotopositie. Met nog twee aangesloten Duitse spotters werd gewacht op een aangekondigde goederentrein met als fraaie tractie een 181. Nadat deze vangst zeer tevreden werd ontvangen, gingen de Duitse spotters weer verder. Ik pakte daarna nog drie goederentreinen waaronder één met de fraaie “No time to waste” van Lineas. Door verschillende verstoringen verderop in de treindienst bleef een grote “uittocht” echter uit, maar met uiteindelijk zo’n twintig goederentreinen goed voor de zon en aardig wat afwisseling qua tractie en wagens kan ik zeer tevreden terugkijken.
Hier zien we de SEL 181 211-4 met een goederentrein richting Osnabrück in Lengerich op 12-6-2025.

Now for something local.The grebe was photographed under the birding tower in the reserve.
Part bird, part submarine, the Pied-billed Grebe is common across much of North America. These small brown birds have unusually thick bills that turn silver and black in summer.
These expert divers inhabit sluggish rivers, freshwater marshes, lakes, and estuaries. They use their chunky bills to kill and eat large crustaceans along with a great variety of fish, amphibians, insects, and other invertebrates.
Rarely seen in flight and often hidden amid vegetation, Pied-billed Grebes announce their presence with loud, far-reaching calls.
Lobed (not webbed) toes assist with swimming. Pied-billed Grebes pay for their aquatic prowess on land, where they walk awkwardly.
Pied-billed Grebe chicks typically leave the nest the first day after hatching and spend much of their first week riding around on a parent’s back. They usually spend most of their first 3 weeks on or near the nest platform.
Pied-billed Grebes are fairly poor fliers and typically stay on the water—although rare individuals have managed to fly as far as the Hawaiian Islands, Europe, the Azores, and the Canary Islands.
Pied-billed Grebes can trap water in their feathers, giving them great control over their buoyancy. They can sink deeply or stay just at or below the surface, exposing as much or as little of the body as they wish.
When in danger, Pied-billed Grebes sometimes make a dramatic “crash-dive” to get away. A crash-diving grebe pushes its body down with its wings thrust outward. Its tail and head disappears last, while the bird kicks water several feet into the air.
The longest-lived Pied-billed Grebe on record was at least 4 years, 7 months old and lived in California. – Wikipedia

While technically not a good image, I think it is interesting because one of the young birds has a toe of the hovering adult in its mouth. And the youngster was closing its beak on the toe. Likely a natural reaction to feeling the pressure of the toe on its mouth.

The short-toed snake eagle (Circaetus gallicus), also known as the short-toed eagle, is a medium-sized bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as kites, buzzards and harriers. The genus name Circaetus is from the Ancient Greek kirkos, a type of hawk, and aetos, "eagle". The specific gallicus means "of Gallia".[3]
This is an Old World species found throughout the Mediterranean basin, into Russia and the Middle East, and parts of Western Asia, and in the Indian Subcontinent and also further east in some Indonesian islands.
Those present on the northern edge of the Mediterranean and other parts of Europe migrate mainly to sub-Saharan Africa north of the equator, leaving in September/October and returning in April/May.[4] In the Middle and Far East the populations are resident. In Europe, it is most numerous in Spain where it is fairly common but elsewhere it is rare in many parts of its range. A bird on the Isles of Scilly, Britain, in October 1999 was the first confirmed record for that country.
The short-toed snake eagle is found in open cultivated plains, arid stony deciduous scrub areas and foothills and semi-desert areas.[5] It requires trees for nesting and open habitats, such as cultivations and grasslands for foraging.[6]
