Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum endemic to Sumatra, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world.
Due to its odour, like that of a rotting corpse, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the corpse flower or corpse plant.
The plant only flowers once every 7 to 10 years and that for a very short time (only a few days). (This photo was taken on May 12th 2021)
The titan arum is a giant among plants, with a massive flowering structure that can reach over 3 meters (10 ft) in height . The plant generally requires 7–10 years of vegetative growth before blooming for the first time. Due to its odor, which is like the smell of a rotting animal, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the corpse flower. The titan arum grows in the wild only in the rainforests of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is classified as Vulnerable (V) in the 1997 IUCN Red List of Threatened Plants.
Scientific name: Amorphophallus titanum (Becc.) Becc.
Common name: titan arum, carrion flower, corpse flower, Kibut.

Rainforests of Bengkulu province are also home to the world's tallest flower and possibly the smelliest flower Titan Arum (Amorphophallus titanum), known locally as Kibut or also known as bunga Bangkai.
The flower is a rich red, with a huge yellow stamen protruding from its core, when it throws up a spectacular flower spike than can stand over 2 m (6.5 feet) high. Titan Arum / Kibut creates such a stink because when the flower is fully open, it gets hot and emits a repulsive scent that is attractive to its pollinators. It only lasts about 3 days before collapsing. Read more at my blog virtualadrian.blogspot.com/2013/03/kibut-worlds-tallest-f...

This unusual plant called Titan arum has been in the Botanical Garden in Vienna since 2019. It only blooms every 2 to 3 years for about 2 days and grows 2 to 3 metres high. To attract insects for pollination, the plant develops a stench that smells like carrion. Fortunately, this becomes less after the first day, when the flower starts to close again, and was therefore bearable during our visit on 30 May 2022 !!
Slits were cut into the petal so that visitors could take a look inside the flower. In the small picture on the bottom right you can see this, unfortunately somewhat blurred, view into the interior.
Amorphophallus titanum, also known as the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. The titan arum's inflorescence is not as large as that of the talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera, but the inflorescence of the talipot palm is branched rather than unbranched.
Due to its odor, which is like the smell of a rotting corpse or carcass, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the corpse flower or corpse plant (Indonesian: bunga bangkai – bunga means flower, while bangkai can be translated as corpse, cadaver, or carrion). For the same reason, the title corpse flower is also attributed to the genus Rafflesia.
Cultivation, the titan arum generally requires 7–10 years of vegetative growth before blooming for the first time. After its initial blooming, there can be considerable variation in blooming frequency. Some plants may not bloom again for another 7–10 years while others may bloom every two to three years.

Corpse Smell
The strong odor of rotting meat that the flower emits increases gradually from sundown to the middle of the night. This is when the pollinators are most active, and these include flesh flies that then go away as morning approaches.

I waited in line for almost three hours to get a photo of this plant. It bloomed early yesterday morning. I went in the evening and it had already started to close. It only stays open for a day, and only blooms about every 7 - 10 years. It smells like rotting flesh...no, I did not smell it. This corpse plant is named "The Beast", The gardens were supposed to be closed at 9pm, but everyone that was in line at 8 were allowed to view it, I got there at 7:30 and finally got to see it at 10:45. There were probably at least 150 people behind me. It was a long night for the volunteers. It was in front of a window that is normally sunlit...my shot had a dark sky behind it.
Thanks for the views, comments and favs :)
It's a huge, rare flower called Titan arum, also known as a corpse flower. That name comes from the putrid stench that the flower gives off, which smells like rotting flesh, in order to attract the insects that it needs for pollination. Carrion beetles and flesh flies are its natural pollinators in the wild.
Native to Sumatran rain forests, these plants are endangered, and most remaining plants are cultivated in gardens around the world. This one is currently on display at the Chicago Botanic Garden, in Glencoe, Illinois, and is one of 18 corpse flowers that are housed there.
At about 6 feet tall when this shot was taken, the plant is currently in bloom. They typically bloom every three to four years. That huge bud in the center, called a spadex, grows about 5 to 6 inches per day for about two weeks. Then the flower structure around the bottom, called the spathe, opens up and the plant blasts its foul smelling odor for several hours to attract pollinators.
The Chicago Botanic Garden works with other gardens around the country to facilitate cross pollination. Pollen is exchanged with other gardens that also house these plants. I don't know for sure, but I suspect that the rectangular shape that is cut out near the bottom of the spathe is to facilitate the cross pollination effort.
The rarely flowering 'Might Titan' came to flower today here at Kew and is expected to be in flower for the next few days before it collapses.

Excerpt from the plaque:
Titan Arum
The titan arum unfurls at night, emitting a foul aroma that attracts sweat bees as well as flies and carrion beetles-insects that typically dine on decaying animal remains. The insects linger at the base of the spike, which is ringed with the female parts of the plant. In the morning, the spike wilts, the smell fades and the insects leave. They pick up pollen on their way out, then move on to fertilize the next titan arum plant.

Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum, is a flowering plant with the largest unbranched inflorescence in the world. The talipot palm, Corypha umbraculifera, has a larger inflorescence, but it is branched rather than unbranched. A. titanum is endemic to Sumatra.
Due to its odor, like that of a rotting corpse, the titan arum is characterized as a carrion flower, and is also known as the corpse flower or corpse plant (Indonesian: bunga bangkai—bunga means flower, while bangkai can be translated as corpse, cadaver, or carrion). For the same reason, the title "corpse flower" is also attributed to the genus Rafflesia.
The titan arum's inflorescence can reach over 3 metres (10 ft) in height. Like the related cuckoo pint and calla lily, it consists of a fragrant spadix of flowers wrapped by a spathe, which looks like a large petal. In the case of the titan arum, the spathe is a deep green on the outside and dark burgundy red on the inside, with a deeply furrowed texture. The spadix is hollow and resembles a large baguette. Near the bottom of the spadix, hidden from view inside the sheath of the spathe, the spadix bears two rings of small flowers. The upper ring bears the male flowers, the lower ring is spangled with bright red-orange carpels. The "fragrance" of the titan arum resembles rotting meat, attracting carrion-eating beetles and flesh flies (family Sarcophagidae) that pollinate it. The inflorescence's deep red color and texture contribute to the illusion that the spathe is a piece of meat. During bloom, the tip of the spadix is approximately human body temperature, which helps the perfume volatilize; this heat is also believed to assist in the illusion that attracts carcass-eating insects.
Both male and female flowers grow in the same inflorescence. The female flowers open first, then a day or two following, the male flowers open. This usually prevents the flower from self-pollinating.
After the flower dies back, a single leaf, which reaches the size of a small tree, grows from the underground corm. The leaf grows on a somewhat green stalk that branches into three sections at the top, each containing many leaflets. The leaf structure can reach up to 6 metres (20 ft) tall and 5 metres (16 ft) across. Each year, the old leaf dies and a new one grows in its place. When the corm has stored enough energy, it becomes dormant for about four months. Then the process repeats.
In cultivation, the titan arum generally requires 7 to 10 years of vegetative growth before blooming for the first time. After its initial blooming, there can be considerable variation in blooming frequency. Some plants may not bloom again for another 7 to 10 years while others may bloom every two to three years. There have also been documented cases of back-to-back blooms occurring within a year and corms simultaneously sending up both a leaf (or two) and an inflorescence. There has also been an occasion when a corm produced multiple simultaneous blooms.
The spathe generally begins to open between mid-afternoon and late evening and remains open all night. At this time, the female flowers are receptive to pollination. Although most spathes begin to wilt within twelve hours, some have been known to remain open for 24 to 48 hours. As the spathe wilts, the female flowers lose receptivity to pollination.
Self-pollination is normally considered impossible, but in 1999, Huntington Botanical Garden botanists hand-pollinated their plant with its own pollen from ground-up male flowers. The procedure was successful, resulting in fruit and ten fertile seeds from which several seedlings eventually were produced.

Blooms only once every 10 years, now at Bloedel Conservatory in Vancouver. It must be happy there because it bloomed in only 7 years! We didn't get to see it open fully because sun was shining on it from the glass dome above (it needs shade); there's a shot of one of the signs outside the Conservatory in comments below - shows what it looks like when open.
It grows only in Sumatra and Java jungles. As it gradually opens, it releases powerful odors to attract pollinators - insects which feed on dead animals or lay their eggs in rotting meat. The potency of the odor gradually increases from late evening until the middle of the night, when carrion beetles and flesh flies are active as pollinators, then tapers off towards morning
Some corpse flowers only bloom once every few decades. The plant's energy is stored in the corm – a swollen stem base typically weighing around 100 lbs. (45 kilograms). The corpse plant has the world's largest known corm, sometimes weighing up to 220 lbs. (100kg). During the non-flowering years, a single leaf, the size of a small tree, shoots up from the corm. This leaf branches out into three sections with each of these sprouting more leaflets. Each year, this shooting leaf dies and a new one grows in its place. After many years, the plant finally gathers enough energy to bloom, and once it does, it can only hold the bloom for 24 to 36 hours before it collapses.
The plant itself grows to around 10 to 15 feet (3 to 4.6 meters) and typically can grow to a massive 8 feet (2.4 m) tall and the leaves can be as big as 13 feet (4 m) wide.

Amorphophallus titanum, the titan arum or Corpse flower, is a flowering plant in the family Araceae. It has a large unbranched inflorescence; a tall single leaf, branched like a tree; and a heavy tuber which enables the plant to produce the inflorescence. A. titanum is endemic to rainforests on the Indonesian island of Sumatra.
Because its flower blooms infrequently and only for a short period, it gives off a powerful scent of rotting flesh to attract pollinators. As a consequence, it is characterized as a carrion flower, earning it the names corpse flower or corpse plant.
After some years, when the tuber is sufficiently large, the titan arum develops an inflorescence instead of a leaf. This inflorescence can reach over 3 m (10 ft) in height. Like the related cuckoo pint and calla lily, it consists of a fragrant spadix of flowers wrapped by a spathe, which looks like a large petal. The spathe is deep green on the outside and dark burgundy red on the inside, with a deeply furrowed texture. The spadix is almost hollow and resembles a large baguette. Near the bottom of the spadix, hidden from view inside the sheath of the spathe, the spadix bears two rings of small flowers. The upper ring bears the male flowers and the lower ring is spangled with the bright red-orange carpels of female flowers. The female flowers open first, and the male flowers open a day or two later. This timing usually prevents the flower from self-pollinating.
As the spathe gradually opens, the spadix heats up to 37 °C (99 °F), and rhythmically releases a powerful odor to attract carrion insects which feed on or lay their eggs in rotting meat. The potency of the odor gradually increases from late evening until the middle of the night, when carrion beetles and flesh flies are active as pollinators, then tapers off towards morning. Analyses of chemicals released by the spadix show the stench includes dimethyl trisulfide (like limburger cheese), dimethyl disulfide (garlic), trimethylamine (rotting fish), isovaleric acid (sweaty socks), benzyl alcohol (sweet floral scent), phenol (like Chloraseptic), and indole (like feces). The odor is detectable up to a half mile (0.8 km) away. The inflorescence's deep red color and texture contribute to the illusion that the spathe is a piece of meat. During bloom, the tip of the spadix is roughly human body temperature, which helps the perfume volatilize. The heated spadix creates a micro-convection in the cool ambient air, enhancing the transport of the scent. The heat also helps to convince carrion-feeding insects that a dead body is present, attracting them to the inflorescence. S_2550

CORPSE FLOWER (TITAN ARUM)
At Foster's Botanical Garden in Honolulu back in 2013. The world's largest flower and one of the stinkiest, hence the name. This one took 8 years to bloom. They bloom at night so I wanted to get there when the garden opened so I could a good whiff of what it smelled like. Smells like roadkill after a few days. Just glad I got to experience this.
Red leafy spathe with 6ft tall spadix, Titan Arum - Corpse Flower. The little rectangle in the bottom is an access port to the actual flowers residing in the base of the spadix. Pollen is harvested from this plant which is then stored. It is also shipped to other growers of this endangered plant for cross-pollinating other Alum flowers. The outer portion of what appears to be the flower's petals is actually a giant leaf. The flower itself is contained deep within the leaf bowl inside the central spike called a spadix. This plant exudes a corpse-like stench in order to attract pollinators to it. These plants bloom every few years for about 48 hours. This is one of 4 images in a series, showing examples of the Alum plant group.
The giant Titan Arum flower (taller than a person), blooms only once every two or three years and the flower only lasts for one or two days.
This flower bloomed today at the McMaster University greenhouse and I managed to see it and snap a picture of it at full height.

The bloom opened day before yesterday in the late afternoon. I expected the flower still to be open today, but alas, after only 1.5 days it's already closing and slowly dying.

It's the largest inflorescence in the world.
The giant Titan Arum flower (taller than a person), blooms only once every two or three years and the flower only lasts for one or two days.
This flower bloomed today at the McMaster University greenhouse and I managed to snap a seldom seen view of the inside of the flower as seen here.
She bloomed today...at Frederik Meijer Gardens. This is a Titan Arum (amorphophallus titanum), better known as a Corpse Flower. Meijer Gardens received this plant as a seedling 18 years ago...this is the first bloom. Will be many years before it blooms again. It smells like rotting meat, which is meant to attract pollinators. It is one of the largest flowers in the world.
