Looking eastwards up the Ellen Valley from the dark pyramidical mound of waste and shale that is the Birkby Tip. Familiar to rail travellers between Workington and Carlisle, this hulking monolith stands relatively unspoiled, alongside the gently-decaying remains of the Birkby drift mine.
The rail mechanism by which the buckets of waste extracted from the bowels of the earth below were transported up the hill and tipped were still intact when I took this picture in 1985.
