Construyen su nido en 3 ó 4 días y consiste en un tazón bastante sustancial hecho de pajitas, palitos, bejucos y raicillas. Es colocado a una altura entre 1 y 3 m., sobre un matorral, una maraña de bejucos, un cultivo enmalezado o un jardín. En ocasiones lo colocan tan bajo como a 30 cm. o tan alto como 1a 8 m. Ponen 2 huevos, o con menor frecuencia uno (ver imagen), entre anteado claro y blanco (miden 29.3 por 22.1 mm.). El período de incubación dura aproximadamente 14 días. Se reproducen a lo largo del año, con temporadas bajas en mayo y junio y octubre y noviembre.
Alimentación
Se alimentan al caminar sobre el suelo; recogen semillas, cascajo e insectos pequeños.
Comportamiento
Son solitarias o forman parejas, pero nunca bandadas. Los machos emiten reclamos desde el follaje denso, desde una altura a nivel del ojo hasta los 9 m.
Usualmente bajan en grupos a tomar agua en quebradas, pozos o ríos.

Viven en bosques secundarios jóvenes y maduros, jardínes, plantaciones de cacao, pejibaye y café, bordes e interior de bosques, áreas urbanas si existe algún predio vacío, bordes de carreteras y bosques de galería. Frecuenta el sotobosque de bosques caducifolios, pero no el de los perennifolios.
Distribución
Es una especie residente de común a abundante en las bajuras, a lo largo de la vertiente del Pacífico; asciende aproximadamente hasta los 800 m., a lo largo de las cordilleras de la zona norte (más alto en los sitios deforestados) y hasta los 1500 m. o más en los sectores sur y zona central. Es más abundante en el Valle Central y a lo largo del Valle del Reventazón hasta Turrialba, aunque se encuentra ausente del resto del lado del Caribe, con excepción de una presencia ocasional y esporádica; sin embargo, aún pueden colonizar esta vertiente a medida que avanza la deforestación.

Se encuentra desde el sur de Texas hasta la parte central de Argentina.

Descripción científica
Mide 26 cm. y pesa 165 grs. Es de tamaño mediano y de patas más bien largas; el forro alar canela rufo y la punta blanca de la cola son conspicuos al volar; a corta distancia se nota la piel azul de la cara.
En los adultos la garganta es blanquecina y progresa a ante rosáceo en la cara, la parte delantera del cuello y el pecho, y a blanco en el abdomen y las coberteras infracaudales. La coronilla, la nuca y lados y parte posterior del cuello son café grisáceo, con un lustre púrpura iridiscente en el macho (muy tenue o ausente en las hembras). El resto de la región superior es café opaco. Las remeras son fuscas y las timoneras laterales negruzcas con una buena porción de la punta de color blanco. El iris es anaranjado, las lores y el anillo ocular desnudos azules, el pico negruzco y las patas carmín (ver imagen).
Los individuos juveniles son más apagados, sin tonos rosados ni iridiscencia; el cuello, el manto y el pecho exhiben un escamado anteado opaco, y presenta un moteado o listado rufo opaco en la coronilla. El pico es café rojizo y la piel de la cara es gris opaco.
