New Year’s Eve Ball History
The first New Year’s Eve Ball lowering celebration atop One Times Square was in 1907. This proud tradition is now a universal symbol of the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Ball is the property of the building owners of One Times Square. The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1904.
The Ball is covered with a total of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. The House of Waterford Crystal factory is located in Waterford, The Republic of Ireland
The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds.
As the famous New Year's Eve Ball descends atop One Times Square, an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world are united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

The Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio joined by Times Square 2017 Special Guest United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon push the Waterford crystal button that signals the descent of the New Year’s Eve Ball, and lead the final sixty-second countdown to the New Year on the Countdown Stage.

The lighted Ball descends 70 feet in sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, twelve feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. The Ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.

Times Square NYC New Years Eve Midnight Ball Drop - New Years Day Celebration New York City USA 2020 - 2021
The Times Square Ball is a time ball located atop the One Times Square building in New York City, primarily utilized as part of New Year's Eve celebrations held in Times Square. Yearly at 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31, the ball is lowered 77 feet (23 m) down a specially designed flagpole, resting on the midnight to signal the start of the new year. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, and has been held annually since (except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts). The ball's design has also been updated over the years to reflect new advances in technologies—its original design utilized 100 incandescent light bulbs, iron, and wood in its construction, while its current incarnation features a computerized LED lighting system and an outer surface consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels. As of 2009, the ball is also displayed atop One Times Square year-round and is removed only for general maintenance.

DETAILS OF ACTION:
- Couples (same-sex or straight) are asked to stand holding hands, hug or kiss in-place
- If you are single (like so many of us!) come join! We will be pairing-up single strangers to hold hands!
- We will line-up the couples in a diagonal line with gaps between each couple
- This will "force" the tourist traffic to walk directly through the line to get to the other side
- Participants will hold this position for approx 15-minutes
- Following the action, participants are encouraged to scrawl messages of love in chalk on the sidewalk/street
WHAT TO BRING:
- Participants are encouraged to bring signs with their own messages of LOVE (trying best to be informative and positive)
- Signs MUST be paper or cardboard! NO plastic or wooden poles/handles
- Please bring with you a printed image (PROVIDED BELOW) of an LGBT victim of hate violence or bullycide. Or bring a message, sign, loving memorial of your own declaring "I STAND HERE FOR..."

DETAILS OF ACTION:
- Couples (same-sex or straight) are asked to stand holding hands, hug or kiss in-place
- If you are single (like so many of us!) come join! We will be pairing-up single strangers to hold hands!
- We will line-up the couples in a diagonal line with gaps between each couple
- This will "force" the tourist traffic to walk directly through the line to get to the other side
- Participants will hold this position for approx 15-minutes
- Following the action, participants are encouraged to scrawl messages of love in chalk on the sidewalk/street
WHAT TO BRING:
- Participants are encouraged to bring signs with their own messages of LOVE (trying best to be informative and positive)
- Signs MUST be paper or cardboard! NO plastic or wooden poles/handles
- Please bring with you a printed image (PROVIDED BELOW) of an LGBT victim of hate violence or bullycide. Or bring a message, sign, loving memorial of your own declaring "I STAND HERE FOR..."

New Year’s Eve Ball History
The first New Year’s Eve Ball lowering celebration atop One Times Square was in 1907. This proud tradition is now a universal symbol of the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Ball is the property of the building owners of One Times Square. The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1904.
The Ball is covered with a total of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. The House of Waterford Crystal factory is located in Waterford, The Republic of Ireland
The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds.
As the famous New Year's Eve Ball descends atop One Times Square, an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world are united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

- This will "force" the tourist traffic to walk directly through the line to get to the other side
- Participants will hold this position for approx 15-minutes
- Following the action, participants are encouraged to scrawl messages of love in chalk on the sidewalk/street
WHAT TO BRING:
- Participants are encouraged to bring signs with their own messages of LOVE (trying best to be informative and positive)
- Signs MUST be paper or cardboard! NO plastic or wooden poles/handles
- Please bring with you a printed image (PROVIDED BELOW) of an LGBT victim of hate violence or bullycide. Or bring a message, sign, loving memorial of your own declaring "I STAND HERE FOR..."

The Times Square Ball is a time ball located atop the One Times Square building in New York City, primarily utilized as part of New Year's Eve celebrations held in Times Square. Yearly at 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31, the ball is lowered 77 feet (23 m) down a specially designed flagpole, resting on the midnight to signal the start of the new year. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, and has been held annually since (except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts). The ball's design has also been updated over the years to reflect new advances in technologies—its original design utilized 100 incandescent light bulbs, iron, and wood in its construction, while its current incarnation features a computerized LED lighting system and an outer surface consisting of triangle-shaped crystal panels. DETAILS OF ACTION:
- Couples (same-sex or straight) are asked to stand holding hands, hug or kiss in-place
- If you are single (like so many of us!) come join! We will be pairing-up single strangers to hold hands!
- We will line-up the couples in a diagonal line with gaps between each couple
- This will "force" the tourist traffic to walk directly through the line to get to the other side
- Participants will hold this position for approx 15-minutes
- Following the action, participants are encouraged to scrawl messages of love in chalk on the sidewalk/street
WHAT TO BRING:
- Participants are encouraged to bring signs with their own messages of LOVE (trying best to be informative and positive)
- Signs MUST be paper or cardboard! NO plastic or wooden poles/handles
- Please bring with you a printed image (PROVIDED BELOW) of an LGBT victim of hate violence or bullycide. Or bring a message, sign, loving memorial of your own declaring "I STAND HERE FOR..."

New Year’s Eve Ball History
The first New Year’s Eve Ball lowering celebration atop One Times Square was in 1907. This proud tradition is now a universal symbol of the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Ball is the property of the building owners of One Times Square. The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1904.
The Ball is covered with a total of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. The House of Waterford Crystal factory is located in Waterford, The Republic of Ireland
The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds.
As the famous New Year's Eve Ball descends atop One Times Square, an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world are united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

The lighted Ball descends 70 feet in sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, twelve feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. The Ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.

The Times Square Ball is a time ball located atop the One Times Square building in New York City, primarily utilized as part of New Year's Eve celebrations held in Times Square. Yearly at 11:59 p.m. EST on December 31, the ball is lowered 77 feet (23 m) down a specially designed flagpole, resting on the midnight to signal the start of the new year. The first ball drop in Times Square took place on December 31, 1907, and has been held annually since (except in 1942 and 1943 in observance of wartime blackouts). Each year during the New Year’s Eve celebration in Times Square in Manhattan New York City a time ball made by Waterford Crystal and electric lights is raised to the top of a pole on the One Times Square building at 6:00 pm and then lowered to mark the coming of the New Year. The ball descends 77 feet (23 m) over the course of a minute coming to rest at the bottom of its pole at midnight, then a sign with the digits of the new year lights up as the ball's lights turn off. Toshiba's Times Square billboard directly below the ball counts down to midnight as well.
Every year up to one million people gather in Times Square to watch the ball drop and an estimated 1 billion watch the video of the event, 100 million of them in the United States.
In 1904 The New York Times opens its new headquarters on Longacre Square (the city's second tallest building) and persuades the city to rename the triangular "square" for the newspaper. Owner Adolph Ochs initiates a massive celebration in the square for New Year's, which is so popular 200,000 came it permanently displaces the celebration from Trinity Church. There is no ball, but there are fireworks.
1907 Walter F. Palmer chief electrician for The Times creates the first New Year’s Eve Ball in response to the behest of publisher Adolph Ochs to create some kind of spectacular midnight show that would draw attention to the Square. The New Year’s Eve Ball first descended from a flagpole at One Times Square constructed with iron and wood materials with 100 25-watt bulbs weighing 700 pounds (320 kg) and measuring 5 feet (1.5 m) in diameter. At first it dropped 1 second after midnight.

The first New Year’s Eve Ball lowering celebration atop One Times Square was in 1907. This proud tradition is now a universal symbol of the New Year. The New Year’s Eve Ball is the property of the building owners of One Times Square. The first Times Square New Year’s Eve celebration was held in 1904.
The Ball is covered with a total of 2,688 Waterford Crystal triangles. The House of Waterford Crystal factory is located in Waterford, The Republic of Ireland
The Ball is 12 feet in diameter, and weighs 11,875 pounds.
As the famous New Year's Eve Ball descends atop One Times Square, an estimated one million people in Times Square, millions nationwide and over a billion watching throughout the world are united in bidding a collective farewell to the departing year, and expressing joy and hope for the year ahead.

The Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio joined by Times Square 2017 Special Guest United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon push the Waterford crystal button that signals the descent of the New Year’s Eve Ball, and lead the final sixty-second countdown to the New Year on the Countdown Stage.

The lighted Ball descends 70 feet in sixty seconds. The Ball is a geodesic sphere, twelve feet in diameter, weighing 11,875 pounds. The Ball is covered with 2,688 Waterford crystal triangles and lit by 32,256 Philips Luxeon Rebel LEDs.
