I ROBOT

This is one of the first books I ever read after leaving school and it took me down the long road of Science Fiction. Isaac Asimov, Philip K Dick, J G Ballard, Frederic Pohl, Jack Williamson, Robert A Heinlein and so many others.

So this is a little tribute to those imaginative folk who put pen to paper, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

The little clock character was a birthday gift of many moons ago, he seemed appropriate to go on the shelf too. A bit cranky now, he doesn’t stand up by himself but leans in a very casual way and is a good timekeeper.

The next bit is a bit weird, I don’t own a copy of Asimov’s “I Robot” because it’s not in Penguin Books and I only collect Penguin Science fiction but I might make an exception and buy it along with the ‘Foundation' series at some time.

Hope some of you have enjoyed Sci/Fi too and have appreciated those writers and their imaginations. Here are a couple of other titles that I think have gone down in history as classic fiction.

Standing quietly on the waters of Roath Park Lake, the Scott Memorial Lighthouse watches over Cardiff with timeless grace. Dedicated to Captain Robert Falcon Scott and his ill-fated Antarctic expedition, the tower is a poignant and elegant local landmark.

Kill the Bill protest, Sheffield. The guy with his back to us is the timekeeper for the drummers.

"Our equatorial sundial was created and installed by Observatory staff (Leon Hall and Joseph Frame) in 1957. The ring is made of high-nickel bronze and has an outside diameter of 34 inches. Engraved markings on the ring allow one to track the movement of the shadow and, thus, to keep the time using the Sun. The ring is held in position by a clamp, which can be loosened to allow staff to rotate the ring when adjustments are needed (such as when Daylight Saving Time begins and ends). The heavy wire passing through the center of the ring, and at right angles to it, is made of a nickel-copper alloy. It is parallel to the Earth's axis, being accurately mounted in a north-south direction and pointed to the north pole of the sky. The angle it makes with the horizon is 34 degrees, which is equal to the latitude of Los Angeles. The Sundial gives us a better appreciation of the role of our rotating Earth as the fundamental timekeeper." Source: griffithobservatory.org/exhibits/astronomers_monument.html

Torre do Relógio

Located in the heart of Sintra, a picturesque town just outside Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city, you will find one of its most iconic landmarks – Torre do Relógio or Clock Tower. This majestic tower has stood tall for centuries and offers visitors an intriguing glimpse into Portugal’s rich history.

The Torre do Relógio is steeped in history that dates back to the early 16th century. The tower was initially constructed as part of the Royal Palace complex during the reign of King Manuel I, who ruled from 1495-1521. It served not only as a timekeeper but also as an important symbol of royal power and prestige.

In its long existence, it has survived earthquakes and wars while maintaining much of its original structure. The clock itself was installed later on in the 19th century under Queen Maria II’s orders during her reign (1834-1853). Withstanding time and elements alike, this remarkable edifice continues to function today both as a historical monument and a working clock tower. - Explorial

I made this image for the Macro Mondays group on the topic of Inheritance but decided to use the previous image instead but still like this as an interesting close-up

Deep within the Grand Canyon, I found one of the most amazing locations to photograph the night sky. This particular photograph represents two hours of the Earth's rotation with a thousands of stars acting as the timekeeper. The tranquility and awe imbued into this view will forever be fused into my memory. There's no doubt in my mind that the Grand Canyon deserves a place as one of the greatest wonders on Earth.

I've been playing with this image for 6 months off and on. I add something then take something else out and on and on. I decided to post it and call it finished.

You may recognize the "ladies" from a shot I took and posted a while back of a monument in Chippiannock Cemetery.

Here is a link to that shot in case you are interested in what started this whole idea:

Those wast that all to me, love,

For which my soul did pine -

A green isle in the sea, love,

A fountain and a shrine

All wreathes with fairy fruits and flowers,

And all the flowers were mine.

And all my days are trances

And all my nightly dreams

Are where thy gray eye glances,

And where thy footstep gleams -

In what ethereal dances,

By what eternal streams.

Perched high above at around 10,000 feet elevation, the white mountains are home to the ancient bristlecone forest. Here, blistering winds and harsh winters shape the trees into having twisted branches and leaning trunks. One of the more well-known trees, this ancient dweller succumbed at some point leaving behind a ghostly and gnarled frame. Without leaves and consisting only of twisted trunks and branches, it is the dead trees that are typically the most photogenic. Luckily for us, some monsoonal clouds lasted into sunset for a beautiful evening up in the mountains.

Big Ben

"Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London[1] and is usually extended to refer to both the clock and the clock tower as well. The tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; previously, it was known simply as the Clock Tower.

When completed in 1859, it was, says clockmaker Ian Westworth, “the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world.” The tower had its 150th anniversary on 31 May 2009, during which celebratory events took place."

Westminster Bridge

"The bridge is painted predominantly green, the same colour as the leather seats in the House of Commons which is on the side of the Palace of Westminster nearest to the bridge. This is in contrast to Lambeth Bridge, which is red, the same colour as the seats in the House of Lords and is on the opposite side of the Houses of Parliament."

"Opened in 1862, Westminster Bridge was designated a Grade II* listed structure in 1981"

A watch is a small timepiece intended to be carried or worn by a person. It is designed to keep working despite the motions caused by the person's activities. A wristwatch is designed to be worn on a wrist, attached by a watch strap or other type of bracelet. A pocket watch is designed for a person to carry in a pocket.

Watches evolved in the 17th century from spring-powered clocks, which appeared as early as the 14th century. The first watches were strictly mechanical, driven by clockwork. As technology progressed, mechanical devices, used to control the speed of the watch, were largely superseded by vibrating quartz crystals that produce accurately timed electronic pulses. Some watches use radio clocktechnology to regularly correct the time. The first digital electronic watch was developed in 1970.

Most inexpensive and medium-priced watches, used mainly for timekeeping, are electronic watches with quartz movements.Expensive collectible watches, valued more for their elaborate craftsmanship, aesthetic appeal and glamorous design than for simple timekeeping, often have purely mechanical movements and are powered by springs, even though these movements are generally less accurate and more expensive than electronic ones. Various extra features, called "complications", such as moon-phase displays and the different types of tourbillon, are sometimes included. Modern watches often display the day, date, month and year, and electronic watches may have many other functions. Time-related features such as timers, chronographs and alarm functions are common. Some modern designs incorporate calculators, GPS and Bluetooth technology or have heart-rate monitoring capabilities. Watches incorporating GPS receivers use them not only to determine their position. They also receive and use time signals from the satellites, which make them essentially perfectly accurate timekeepers, even over long periods of time.

Developments in the 2010s include smartwatches, which are elaborate computer-like electronic devices designed to be worn on a wrist. They generally incorporate timekeeping functions, but these are only small fractions of what the watch can do.

The study of timekeeping is known as horology.

A rather damp spring day outside had me thinking about indoor photo projects. This old Railway Timekeeper watch I have sprung to mind, and I found this photo from WW2 (evacuee children, 1941) to use as a background prop.

As I was setting this up, I was thinking what an amazing old photo this is and what a special moment the photographer captured - the importance of photography and also printing these sorts of photos for the future.

I was asked by singer/songwriter Lucy Schwartz to do some artwork for her, and this is what resulted! This image was specifically created for her single, Ghost in my House, and the other image on my blog for her album as a whole, Timekeeper.

My blog has both pictures as well as the beautifully cinematic behind the scenes video created from the day. Lots of smoke filling rooms and beautiful light. Ah it was a great day :)

This young man, with ten years cycle racing experience in this legs, took on the task of trying to break the club 100 mile time trial record, the course was set, out and back and same road return, measured and approved, marshalls, witnesses, and official timekeepers hired, the best time for the attempt was 5am Sunday 19th August 1973. The day was dry with little wind, perfect conditions the attempt was on! and it was broken by almost a amazing three mins. in 4hrs 20mins 38secs his finest cycling achievement. Nearly forgot to say that young man was Tom Webzell (me)...

Thank you for your visit, any comments would be gratefully received, any jokes about my legs, I will accept ..........Tom.

Alas, they were genuinely shocked when the clock in the background rattled the foundations of the entire district the moment she announced her "Gravity-defying time measurer" adorned with hideous cackling."

The Selimiye Mosque (Turkish: Selimiye Camii) is a mosque in the city of Edirne, Turkey. The mosque was commissioned by Sultan Selim II and was built by architect Mimar Sinan between 1568 and 1574. It was considered by Sinan to be his masterpiece and is one of the highest achievements of Islamic architecture.

This grand mosque stands at the center of a külliye (complex of a hospital, school, library and/or baths around a mosque) which comprises a medrese (Islamic academy teaches both Islamic and Scientific lessons), a dar-ül hadis (Al-Hadith school), a timekeeper's room and an arasta (row of shops). It also contains a Bayezid II Külliye Health Museum, now a museum. In this mosque Sinan employed an octagonal supporting system that is created through eight pillars incised in a square shell of walls. The four semi domes at the corners of the square behind the arches that spring from the pillars, are intermediary sections between the huge encompassing dome (31.25m diameter with spherical profile) and the walls. While conventional mosques were limited by a segmented interior, Sinan's effort at Edirne was a structure that made it possible to see the mihrab from any location within the mosque. Surrounded by four of the tallest pencil-shaped minarets, the Mosque of Selim II has a grand dome atop it. Around the rest of the mosque were many additions: libraries, schools, hospices, baths, soup kitchens for the poor, markets, hospitals, and a cemetery. These annexes were aligned axially and grouped, if possible. In front of the splendid mosque sits a rectangular court with an area equal to that of the mosque. The innovation however, comes not in the size of the building, but from the organization of its interior. The mihrab is pushed back into an apse-like alcove with a space with enough depth to allow for window illumination from three sides. This has the effect of making the tile panels of its lower walls sparkler with natural light. The amalgamation of the main hall forms a fused octagon with the dome-covered square. Formed by eight massive dome supports, the octagon, is pierced by four half dome covered corners of the square. The beauty resulting from the conformity of geometric shapes engulfed in each other was the culmination of Sinan's life long search for a unified interior space.

At the Bulgarian siege of Edirne in 1915, the dome of the mosque is hit by Bulgarian artillery. Since the dome is built extremely strong, the mosque survived the assult with only some damages at the coating of the dome. With Atatürk's order, it has not been restored since then, to warn the next generations.

Perched above the bustling concourse of Charing Cross Station, this elegant clock has silently marked the passage of time for generations of Londoners and travelers alike. More than a mere timepiece, it stands as a sentinel to history, witnessing moments both grand and everyday.

Notably, on 26 December 1918, the clock looked on as President Woodrow Wilson arrived at Charing Cross Station, greeted by King George V—a historic meeting commemorated by a plaque beneath the clock.

Charing Cross Station itself, opened in 1864, was designed by Sir John Hawkshaw and served as a pivotal terminus connecting London to the southeast and continental Europe. Its forecourt features the Queen Eleanor Memorial Cross, a Victorian homage to the original 13th-century monument, symbolizing the station’s deep-rooted historical significance.

Today, while trains come and go beneath its gaze, the clock remains a steadfast emblem of Charing Cross’s enduring legacy.

Big Ben is the nickname for the Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, and the nickname is often extended to refer to the clock and the clock tower.

However, the clock tower is officially known as Elizabeth Tower, renamed to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of Elizabeth II in 2012; previously it was known simply as the Clock Tower.

When the Great Clock was completed in 1859, it was, says clockmaker Ian Westworth, “the prince of timekeepers: the biggest, most accurate four-faced striking and chiming clock in the world.”

A British cultural icon, the tower is one of the most prominent symbols of the United Kingdom and is often in the establishing shot of films set in London.
