ODC-Time Is Of The Essence

I just made this dough for my Rugelach, and it's firming up in the fridge so I can roll it out. But, it has to sit for at least 3 hours, so I'll finish making these cookies after lunch! I am going to freeze these, and we can enjoy them this Sunday for Chanukkah!

The DHL Express network in Italy is made up of 11 centres, among which two international airport hubs: Milan Malpensa and Bergamo Orio al Serio. Milan Bergamo Airport today is the third Italian airport for air transported goods, and market leader in southern Europe for "Express Couriers". Recently, DHL and Aerologic opened from Italy to China the Hong Kong – Bergamo route, twice a week, flown with a Boeing 777F. Malpensa is becoming more and more the location for expansion of the BGY operation as BGY has a strict night curfew.

There are also two domestic hubs: Bologna and Carpiano. The company’s Italian fleet is composed of 16 aircraft.

This 757-256PCF is almost ready for departure. Only two more pallets have to be boarded. But this is always done at the last minute for obvious reasons. The crew already started the flight preparation in the cockpit. The flight is destined for Leipzig-Halle. Leipzig-Halle is the biggest European air freight hub in the DHL network and serves global flights.

The G-DHKC started its service life at Iberia in 2000. Its manufacturer serial number is 30052 and was number 948 in the production count of Boeing (Renton). In 2007 the aircraft entered service with Icelandair in a C22Y161 configuration. Finally in 2015 it was painted in the DHL yellow livery.

Technical stuff

In the hectic process prior to departure a quick shot was possible. So, I had to work with a high ISO setting. Luckily, the X-T2 is in its element when using high settings. This photo is taken handheld at 10.000 ISO F4.0 and 1/70 with the magnificent and versatile (also read forgiving) XF16-55mm lens.

Post-production was done with PS CC. It consisted of colour balancing the whole ensemble and cropping. Finally I added the copyright watermarks. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

Pushbacks at busy airports are usually subjected to ground control clearance to facilitate optimal ground movement capacity on taxiways. Once clearance is obtained, the pilot will communicate with the pushback tractor driver (or a ground handler walking alongside the aircraft as in this case) to start the pushback. To communicate, a headset may be connected near the nose gear.

As the pilots cannot see what is behind the aircraft, steering is done by the tug driver and not by the pilots. Depending on the aircraft type and airline procedure, a bypass or ground locking pin may be temporarily installed into the nose gear to disconnect it from the aircraft's normal steering mechanism. However, this is now no longer always the case.

Occasionally, a pushback may need to be followed by an engines-running pull forward to a position where local procedures allow aircraft to move forward under their own power

Once the pushback is completed, the towbar is disconnected, and – if applicable – the bypass pin is removed. The ground handler will show the pin to the pilots to make it clear that it has been removed. The pushback is then complete, and the aircraft can taxi forward under its own power.

Here you see a towbarless tug or TBL tug. They scoop up the nose wheel and lift it off the ground, allowing the tug to manoeuvre the aircraft with more precision. It allows for better control of the aircraft and higher speeds. The main advantage of a towbarless tug is simplicity. By eliminating the towbar, operators are alleviated from maintaining many towbars. Also, the physical action and coordination required by the tug operator to move an aircraft with a TBL tug is simpler and easier to learn than with a towbar. By connecting the tug directly to the aircraft's landing gear – instead of through a towbar – tug operators have better control and responsiveness when maneuvering.

What can I say?! It’s a single handheld shot, while I was flat on my belly on the apron. Sure, it must have been a first for the pilots too!

Post production consisted of cropping it a little, including levelling the horizon. The color toning was done in PS CC with a plugin Color Efex Pro 4 from the Nik Collection. Get it while you can, as Google recently published it for free!

Orio al Serio International Airport (BGY) is the international airport located in the municipal territory of Orio al Serio in Italy, better known as Bergamo. Since 2011 the airport is also known as Il Caravaggio International Airport, after the Baroque painter Michelangelo Merisi da Caravaggio. But actually everybody still calls it Orio al Serio

It served 11,159,631 passengers in 2016 and is the third busiest airport in Italy. 90% of all aircraft movements are by Ryanair and DHL. In the Ryanair network BGY is one of the busiest hubs, serving over 70 destinations. For DHL BGY is one of the five international hubs in Italy.

Last week I had the opportunity to do a photo documentary on BGY. I had guides access to all the scenes (‘front stage and back stage’) in the passenger terminal, the DHL logistical centre and the tarmac. It resulted in a wonderful insight into a time critical operation. Of course, at every airport the operation time is of the essence. But it’s safe to say that at Bergamo time is more critical. Ryanair has a turnaround time of only 25 minutes. And DHL handles all their packages in just under 4 hours every night to guarantee next morning delivery everywhere in the world.

I made a ton of photos. I will post some of them over time on flickr. This one is the first in this series.

Technical stuff

This is one handheld shot made with a Fujifilm X-T2 and a XF16-55mm F2.8 R LM WR lens mounted. Post-production was done by using NIK Efex (Color Efex Pro 4 mode) and Photoshop CC. Post-production included cropping, colour toning, selective colouring, a little noise reduction, balancing the lighting conditions, adding a subtle black-and-white layer and adding the copyright sign. The latter is, alas, there to stay due to the frequent copying of my photos. So, don't bother commenting on that.

sometimes i feel like i want too much out of life, too soon. i'm always worrying that i'm running out of time, but i have no reason to worry. the only thing i truly need to worry about is that i'm not taking advantage of the time that i do have, working too much or whatever.

i need to make more time to go out and take photos like this one, that somehow captured the light perfectly.

Time is probably the most valuable thing we have. Still, people keep on wasting it.

We create our own past, present and tomorrow by how we decide to manage our time. We think that time is running away, but that depends on whether we decide to take control over it or not. ⌛️ Thanks for helping us creating valuable time, @travelandleisureasia and @patekphilippe

Igniting his Lightsaber, Zaakkar turns to face...

A Mystic!

"Greetings, Jedi Master Zaakkar..." The Mystic said, "You will not need your weapons, I mean no harm..."

Putting away his Lighstabers, Zaakkar began to speak to the Mystic, "It has been a while old friend, how are you?" Asked Zaakkar.

"The neutrality of the Mystics to the Sith and Jedi, will always be, but not since your Grandmaster's apprentice almost wiped us out..."

Replied The Mystic.

"I know and for that I am deeply sorry, but The Sith have return and summon an army... The Warriors of Mandalore..." Replied Zaakkar.

"It is not possible, The Sith are extinct from their Sith Civil War..." Replied the Mystic.

"I thought the same, until one of our own a Mandalorian Jedi reported that a Sith apprentice/assassin attacked traitor to the Jedi Council,

JuJu Jargon, and then a Sith Lord killed him with a new ability... Force Fire..." Said Zaakkar.

"If what you say is true than your most sacred possession the Kyber Crystals are at stake... This could be another Great Kyber War..." The

Mystic thought aloud.

"I come here, because the Jedi need your help, we will be wiped out by The Sith and its armies without your help and the rest of Voss..."

Stated Jedi Master Zaakkar.

"Hmmm, I'm sorry my old friend, but we ourselves are as depleted and out of resources as the Jedi find themselves to be, we cannot help

you..." Replied The Mystic.

"Don't you understand, if The Sith and Mandalore destroy The Jedi, whose to say you're not next?!" Basically yelling was Zaakkar.

"Even if what you say is true, and we do come to The Aide of The Jedi, and we join in your war... Whose to say we are not all wiped out?"

Asked The Mystic.

"All I know is this if we stand together, we have a chance, apart we will both be annihilated..." Zaakkar put simply.

"We will need to time to process your decision..." Zaakkar cut him off, "THERE IS NO TIME!!! Mandalore prepares with the Sith Lord as we

speak! Come to our aide or we will both face extinction!" Zaakkar shouted.

"If you want our help Jedi Master Zaakkar, you would think twice at yelling at me as Leader of Voss on my home planet!" Retorted The

Mystic.

"Yes, my friend, it's just... I fear the worst for The Jedi Order especially without any help... But if it's time you need I will report to

Grandmaster Trask and tell him the grave news..." Zaakkar stated.

"Remeber Zaakkar I said we needed time, I did not say we wouldn't come," The Mystic responded.

"Time, is something The Jedi don't have..." Zaakkar said as he walked back to his ship.
