om
ganga cha yamune chaiva
godavari saravati
narmade sindho kaveri
jale ‘smin sannidhim kuru
(O Ganges, O Yamuna,
O Godavari, O Saravati,
O Narmada, O Sindhu,
O Kaveri,
por favor hazte presente en esta agua)
There was something about this Sadhu that got my attention while I was covering a vintage car rally in old Delhi. When I took his photo he raised his hand to give his blessing in typical Hindu style. His forehead covered with turmeric Tilak, turban adorns his head and face full of gray beard and mustache, eyes so intriguing. He stood there behind the railing like he only wanted to stop to give his blessings. He soon went his way with other Sadhus.

Pushkar is one of the oldest existing cities of India. It lies on the shore of the Pushkar Sarovar (Lake). The date of its actual origin is not known, but legend associates Brahma with its creation. The city has many temples and ghats and has people from all over the world coming here. It has flourishing market with loads of tourists and pilgrims. This old Sadhu I spotted in one such market. Thick gray eyebrows and mustache, stubble and wearing head scarf, he looked stern and gave a very angry look to me showing displeasure at being shot!

Pushkar in Rajasthan, India is one of the holiest places for Hindus. The lake around which Pushkar is inhabited is believed to be a holy creation. People come here for bathing which is considered to be very auspicious. Sadhus from all over India come here. Seen here in this black and white shot is a white bearded Sadhu, with a turban on his head, bag on one shoulder and shawl on the other, walking in one of the streets of Pushkar. He seemed happy to be clicked and his face is beaming with joy. Though not too old, his smile made his wrinkles on his face more pronounced. He wears holy beads around his neck and has a vermillion and ash spot on his forehead!

We spent two days with amazing people of Trondheim, hanging around the city and staying at the best alternative district, Svartlamon :)

The Golden Temple or Shri Harmandir Sahib is considered holy by Sikhs because the eternal guru of Sikhism, the Sri Guru Granth Sahib, is always present inside it and its construction was mainly intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religion to come and worship God equally. The Sri Guru Granth Sahib is the holiest literature in the Sikh religion, the tenth guru of Sikhism, Guru Gobind Singh, on 7 October 1708 at Nanded made it the eternal Sikh Guru and the leader of Sikhism.Anywhere in the world where the Guru Granth Sahib is present is equally holy and precious to Sikhs. Amritsar is the location of Harmandir Sahib.
Pushkar, in Rajasthan is one of the most ancient cities in India. Pushkar has one of the few Brahma temples in the world. Pushkar is also one of the five sacred Dhaams. It is often referred to as Tirth Raj. Over the years, Pushkar is one of the most popular destinations among tourists from India and also from abroad. It isn’t difficult to fall in love with Pushkar’s tranquility, its spiritual ambiance, its winding lanes and its colorful fairs. Adding to the spiritual ambiance of the city are Sadhus (Holy Man) such as this in the shot visiting from all over India. Like most, this Sadhu is wearing a turban and a Tilak on forehead. A long face, droopy eyes, sunken cheeks and a stubble, this Sadhu doesn't look tired from the heat of summer in the desert, roaming in the busy 'bazaar' of Pushkar!

Dopo varie richieste sullo sfondo. Distoglievano attenzione a lei.

One more from Edinburgh.
There we were, having sampled a few pre-match pints to help build up the atmosphere, and keep us warm on the way to the stadium.
As we walked to the ground, we were approached by the lady above, apparently a Hindu nun, looking for some contributions in order to help her save more souls (I'm not sure if that was her exact mission, but something along the lines of the Hindu equivalent of soul-saving).
My philosophy is never to argue with a woman carrying CDs entitled "The Three Gates Leading to Hell".
Having parted with a pound sterling, I asked her if I could take a photograph. I think she was surprised, but then gave a big 'go ahead' smile.
That's the first time I've ever asked a stranger if I could take their picture! (I just noticed that my photostream has a lot more 'people' in it recently - not a concious decision either way!).
For the record, the 'three gates leading to hell' are lust, anger, and greed. I'm doomed!!

Patan city - Nepal
When I asked what these leves were, the answer was that they were gifts that the brothers gave to their sisters, on this last and special day of the Festival of the Lights (Diwali).
This are Betel leaves that are rolled, with a filling of Betel nut and some other spices, and lime. It is normally, chewed, like a chewing gum, and it functions as an harmless stimulant. They call it "pan".
However, although the betel leaf has some virtues and applications at medical level, with the continuation, it can be addicting.
These boys were participating in the preparation of the leaves, adding, themselves, the condiments they wanted to the leaves which they were going to offer to their sisters…
Here is some information about the Bhai - Tika:
A special day for brothers...
In the last day of the Diwali (festival of Lights), boys offer these leaves, and other gifts, to their sisters...
"Bhai Tika
Bhai - Tika is a popular name for the festival of Bhai-Dooj in Nepal. The festival is celebrated on the fifth and final day of the Festival of Light which is called Diwali in India and 'Tihar' or 'Panchak Yama' in Nepal. As Bhai Tika is celebrated as a part of the Tihar celebrations the festival is also famously known as 'Bhai Tihar'. Brothers and sisters desperately wait for the arrival of this joyous festival. Sister's apply sacred tika on brother's forehead and pray to Lord Yama, the God of Death, for his long life and prosperity.
Legend of Bhai Tika
Popular legend behind Bhai-Tika narrates the story of Lord Yamaraj and his twin sister Yamuna. When after a gap of several years Yamaraj visited his sister on the auspicious 'Dooj' Day he was received warmly by Yami. She applied tilak on his forehead, performed arti of him and gave a sumptuous meal to eat. Delighted with sister's warmth and affection Yamaraj announced that anyone who visits his sister on Dooj day and eats a meal with her will never be hurled to hell.
People of Nepal also believe a popular tale that says a sister saved his brother's life from the clutches of Yamraj by applying a sacred tilak on her brother's forehead. Since then the festival is being religiously celebrated in Nepal.
Rituals of Bhai Tika
On this day sisters invite brother and his family to her house. Following the rituals of Bhai Tika sister draws three mandaps or boundaries at a selected place. These boundaries symbolize Lord Ganesh, Janmaraj (the God of Birth) and Yamaraj respectively. She then performs Puja of the deities and makes the brother sit on a mat. In Nepal, a unique 'Paanch Rangi Tika' i.e. a tika consisting of five colours (red, green, blue, yellow and white) is lovingly applied by sister on the forehead of brother. Sister prays for brother's long life and draws a boundary (mandap) around her brothers with oil using doob grass. This means that no one including Yamaraj can cross the boundary guarded by sister's love. Sister gives a 'shagun' of fruits, sweets and some gifts to brother and after the ceremonies are over brother blesses sister and pamper her with loads of Bhai Tika Gifts.
Bhai Tika Celebrations
Bhai Tika festival is celebrated with lot of joy in Nepal. Propitious time for celebrations is declared a day before the festival by the royal astrologer. On the festival day, just as King of Nepal received tika from his sister a thirty-one gun salute was given by royal soldiers. Exactly at this time brothers and sisters in Nepal would be performing the ceremonies of Bhai Tika with joy and enthusiasm. Best of festive food is relished and the mood of the people is upbeat. People have all the time to make the best of the festival as the day is marked as a national holiday in Nepal. Those staying away from their siblings send Bhai Tika Gifts and Greetings by courier or post. The latest trend is to send E-Tika as internet access is available to most brothers and sisters"

Step Well of Adalaj is a water well which is five floors deep with steps leading to the floor of the well, it was built in the 14th/15th century, each floor is architecturally decorated with finest stone carvings, an Architectural Wonder less known to the tourists.
Mahatma Gandhi delivered his first speech in Bhuleshwar at Hira Baug in the presence of Bal Gangadhar Tilak after returning to India in 1912. This event marked the beginning of the 'Satyagraha' movement, a three-and-a-half-decade-long struggle for Indian freedom that earned him the title "Father of the Nation." In many ways, it all began right here.
Mumbai holds a lasting connection to Gandhi, not only because of the places he frequented during his lifetime but also because a part of him remains here—his ashes are preserved at the Asiatic Society Town Hall. Sadly, many landmarks in the city tied to this iconic freedom fighter are slowly fading away.
