After attending a cocktail reception, and hanging out in a Jazz bar in San Francisco I walked around Chinatown to take photos. It was after midnight when I took this shot of the iconic Dragon Gate with the lanterns spanning over Grant Avenue in the back.

I processed a paintery and a balanced HDR photo from three RAW exposures, blended them selectively, carefully adjusted the color balance and curves, and desaturated the image. I welcome and appreciate constructive comments.

Hot Pot Restaurant

It has a surprising decoration. A great Buddha presides over it and fills everything.

Amazing restaurant in Zuoyin district in Kaohsiung.

I celebrated my birthday there last March...

On the border of China and Kyrgyzstan lays the Sary Jaz valley. A valley you can only access with a permit. From there you will see the insane Tian Shan mountain range with peaks over 7000m+. These are just the small ones.

The wonder of the Big Buddha @ Po Lin Monastery, Lantau Island, Hong Kong

Apart from being a popular gathering place for tourists and kite flyers, it is still often used for any big celebration and for the government leaders to address the people. If you go during the day you can often buy a ticket to go up to the balcony from which the leaders address the people. This gives a very impressive view of the square and you can pretend to be the government figure of your choice. If at all possible, you must go check out the square at night as well as during the day. The atmosphere at night is different again and the square is beautifully lit.

At sunrise and sunset the flag to the front of the square is raised or lowered by a squad of army personnel. This in itself is an interesting thing to watch. All the traffic on the busy Chang An Avenue is halted, around 30 soldiers march very ceremoniously across the road and the flag is hoisted up, or down the poll. Many people come to watch this, so get there an hour or so before if you want a good view.

At night, this time...

(Here's the day view)

Tian'anmen (天安门), or the Gate of Heavenly Peace. It was first built during the Ming Dynasty in 1420.

Tian'anmen is often referred to as the front entrance to the Forbidden City. Actually the Meridian Gate (午门) is the first entrance to the Forbidden City proper, while Tian'anmen was the entrance to the Imperial City, within which the Forbidden City was located. Tian'anmen is widely used as a Chinese national symbol.

The gate itself was rebuilt several times, getting the current shape and appearance with a reconstruction beginning in 1645. It was given its present name in 1651 when the construction completed.

The Tian'anmen gate was reconstructed once again between 1969-1970. The gate as it stood was by then 300 years old, and badly deteriorated. As the gate was a national symbol, then-Premier Zhou Enlai ordered that the rebuilding was to be kept secret. The whole gate was covered in scaffolding, and the project was officially called a "renovation". The rebuilding aimed to leave the gate's external appearance unchanged while making it more resistant to earthquakes and featuring modern facilities such as an elevator, water supply and heating system.

Mao Zedong Portrait: On July 7, 1949 for the first time the pictures of Zhu De and Mao Zedong were hung to commemorate the Second Sino-Japanese War. Since then, from the official founding date (October 1st) of the People's Republic of China, a portrait of Mao Zedong has been hung above the gate. Each year the old portrait is replaced before October 1, the national day of the PRC.

Tian Chang He (IMO: 9300324) is a container ship registered and sailing under the flag of the China People's Republic. Her gross tonnage is 66,800, and her deadweight is 67,209 tonnes. Her overall length (loa) is 278.94 m, her beam is 40 m and her maximum draught is 14.02 m. Her container capacity is 4632 teu. She was built in 2005 by Koyo Dockyard, Mihara and is operated by Cosco Shipping Lines Limited.

I photographed Tian Chang He as she passed through the mouth of the Swan River heading into the Fremantle Inner Harbour on 23 March 2022. Her last port of call was Port Lang.

Whilst in Fremantle she was attended to by Gulf Agency Company (Australia) Pty Ltd.

The other interesting aspect of the Tian Chang He is she has a 2,000 W tunnel thruster. Not something I can recall featuring on other container ships I have photographed visiting Fremantle.
