I visited with my college choir (men and women) to entertain the troops at Christmas. We sang sacred Christmas classics and carols at the midnight service in the chapel. We stayed 3 days, helping to serve Christmas Dinner to the boys, among other activities. It was pitch black (mid-winter), and everyone was so nice to us! They presented each of us with a souvenir charm (low-grade silver, the size of a half dollar)--seen here. We flew up and back on a C-54 troop transport, making stops and singing at bases in Goose Bay, Gander, and Prince Edward Island. We were each issued a duffel bag of "Arctic gear"--a huge parka, mukluks, etc. Such a FOND MEMORY of a wonderful trip!

I know I had a much more joyful time than did the Vances--and I looked better, too!!

Historic Thule village site with rock and turf winter houses and sunken entrance, Danmark Ø, Fonfjord, Scoresby Sund, East Greenland. A village consisted of around 4 to 6 subterranean winter houses that could be quite large underground with several rooms and connected to each other with tunnels. Summer dwellings consisted of skin tents supported by whale bone ribs, with the edges held down with stones.

Subterranean pre-Inuit Thule dwellings constructed of whale skulls and bones have been discovered on a plain on Radstock Bay, Devon Island, Nunavut, Canada. The Thule people arrived in the Arctic Archipelago from Alaska a thousand years ago.

It was the wildest, strangest music you ever heard, full of the sound of birds and the cries of animals and the wind and the rain, and the thunder and the lightning, and the dashing of huge waves against the shores of a great cold ocean that was formed from ice that had made its way slowly down from Ultima Thule. (Robertson Davies)

The entrance to this Thule house next to a pond in Mallikjuaq Territorial Park on Mallik Island near Kinngait, Nunavut, Canada, was under a low stone lintel. Animal hides would have covered the whale bone rafters of the roof.

The Thule (/ˈtuːli/ or /ˈθjuːl/) or proto-Inuit were the ancestors of all modern Inuit. They developed in coastal Alaska by A.D. 1000 and expanded eastwards across Canada, reaching Greenland by the 13th century. In the process, they replaced people of the earlier Dorset culture that had previously inhabited the region. The appellation "Thule" originates from the location of Thule (relocated and renamed Qaanaaq in 1953) in northwest Greenland, facing Canada, where the archaeological remains of the people were first found at Comer's Midden. The links between the Thule and the Inuit are biological, cultural, and linguistic.

Evidence supports the idea that the Thule (and also the Dorset, but to a lesser degree) were in contact with the Vikings, who had reached the shores of Canada in the 11th century. In Viking sources, these peoples are called the Skræling. Some Thule migrated southward, in the "Second Expansion" or "Second Phase". By the 13th or 14th century, the Thule had occupied an area currently inhabited by the Central Inuit, and by the 15th century, the Thule replaced the Dorset culture. Intensified contacts with Europeans began in the 18th century. Compounded by the already disruptive effects of the "Little Ice Age" (1650–1850), the Thule communities broke apart, and the people were henceforward known as the Eskimo, and later, Inuit.

This being day 300 of the project, I had plan for a grandiose image. Unfortunately I wasn't feeling well, so this is all you get. A great meal cooked by my wife. It was delicious! We did go for a long walk afterwards.

Steak, sweet potatoes, carrots, mushrooms, asparagus, and kale salad. Oh, yeah, some Layer Cake wine!
