Maybe this image I saw on New Years Day 2020 was a foretelling of the year to come. On a blustery cold morning, in an inhospitable environment, isolated from all other forms of life and exposed to the elements of freezing temperatures, snow and howling winds, this lone juniper not only survives, it thrives.

With no eyes to appreciate its view of the West Temple, nor grow fearful over its precarious perch 1000' over the tunnel entry below, this lone tree grows tenaciously reaching toward the heavens, even though that exposes it to the dangers even more.

Isn't that what life is really all about?

This is Mumsy and her five babies who are now almost as big as she is. We are so happy to see all five are still alive and doing so well which is a testament to how well she takes care of them. She's a strict mum and enforces her rules which no doubt has kept them all alive and thriving. That little one in the front with the blonde tail is the scamp of the group. They usually arrive at dusk when the light has faded which presents a challenge to get a crisp and clear shot of them but I keep trying.

We are pretty sure Mumsy is the offspring of Mama who has her own album. She invites you to stop by and visit her photos.

Slough adjacent to the salt ponds and marshes of Don Edwards Refuge has a periodic uptick in Halobacterium and microscopic algae that thrives in briny water. As the salt level goes up, they get stressed and produce this red color.

The bird picking it's meal at the confluence of blue and the pink salty water makes for a very mesmeric and hypnotic scene.

I did capture a few and will post it later. I hope to have more such encounters and capture a few more of these under such circumstances.

When the monkey rushed at us, we turned and faced him and barked loudly and made ourselves look threatening. He got within about 15 feet before he stopped and turned. My heart was beating very fast!!

The monkeys were brought to the Ocala park by a tour boat operator in the 1930s. The monkeys, bought from a New York wildlife dealer, initially were brought to an island on the Silver River, but they promptly swam across the water and thrived in nearby woods.

Third instalment of the series. Fallen trees are often difficult to ignore when looking for images in woodland but getting a decent image not so easy. The conditions being what they were did help to give me something I thought worthwhile sharing this time.

This species is North Americas' largest and most widespread plover. It is the one member of the "Shorebirds" family that can adapt to a drier habitat so can thrive on gravely or sandy shorelines, edges of creeks or ponds or in open agricultural fields, lawns, golf courses or old abandoned industrial sites.

Being a plover they employ the typical run-and-stop foraging technique. Their diet consists of insects including spiders and grasshoppers, earthworms, snails and crayfish. They are noted to be very proficient swimmers even in fast moving water for a species that appears to favor a dry habitat.

They are also noted for their very loud alarm calls as well as their injured wing act while bobbing up and down in an effort to lure predators away from their nest sites.

This pair of young chicks are two of a litter of four feeding in a barnyard where the recent rains have created puddling for them to play and forage in.

So often I've found good conditions forecast, only to make the wrong choice on where to go. I thought the promised hoar frost was going to elude me as there wasn’t much evidence (Other than fog) on the journey. Fear not though... turned out to be spot on when I arrived at my chosen location. A quick minimal bit of refinement on this one. More to come...

Ezekiel 17:9 “Say, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: “Will it thrive? Will he not pull up its roots and cut off its fruit, so that it withers—so that all its sprouting shoots wither? And neither by great strength nor by many people can it be raised from its roots again.”’”

The West Rim is located on the Native American reservation, owned and operated by the Hualapai Nation. The West Rim is most famous for its natural landscape and the Skywalk (…more on that later). At the West Rim, visitors can walk right up to the rim and peer 4,000 feet down the canyon to the Colorado River. The West Rim, while not as wide as the South Rim, is still extremely impressive and the drop to the canyon floor is almost completely vertical.

Joshua Tree

Yucca brevifolia (also known as the Joshua tree, yucca palm, tree yucca, and palm tree yucca) is a plant species belonging to the genus Yucca. It is tree-like in habit, which is reflected in its common names.

This monocotyledonous tree is native to the arid Southwestern United States, specifically California, Arizona, Utah, and Nevada, and northwestern Mexico. It is confined mostly to the Mojave Desert between 400 and 1,800 m (1,300 and 5,900 ft) elevation. It thrives in the open grasslands of Queen Valley and Lost Horse Valley in Joshua Tree National Park. Other regions with large populations of the tree can be found northeast of Kingman, Arizona, in Mohave County; and along U.S. 93 between the towns of Wickenburg and Wikieup, a route which has been designated the Joshua Tree Parkway of Arizona. The trees are abundant in Saddleback Butte State Park only 85 miles north of Downtown Los Angeles in Los Angeles County's Antelope Valley.[10] The common name Joshua tree apparently comes from Christian iconography.

Whinnyfold (locally pronounced finnyfa) is a clifftop hamlet of fisher cottages built in the 1860s, replacing an older settlement one mile inland. Whinnyfold has no harbour, and fisherfolk had to scramble up and down a steep grass slope to access their boats and catches. Nevertheless, in the nineteenth century and the first decades of the twentieth century it was a thriving fishing community, supporting as many as 190 fishermen operating 24 boats and exporting fish as far afield as Manchester.

During the herring boom the fishers abandoned the village for the summer season, seeking more lucrative employment in Peterhead. Enterprisingly, those left behind temporarily converted a few of the cottages into a series of tearooms serving the moneyed holidaymakers visiting Cruden Bay. Among the visitors was Bram Stoker, author of Dracula.

Judging from how many successful fishing episodes this one-eyed eagle had, it’s likely she was feeding young. An eagle blind in her right eye, presumably this one, has been reported for a number of years at Conowingo Dam. I’m guessing she is a year-round resident with a nest nearby.

Poodle dog bush

This plant is found in the mountainous areas around Los Angeles from 3,300 to 7,500 ft. It thrives in pine forests that have been recently disturbed by fire where it helps to prevent erosion and can cover burned hillsides.. Its seeds can remain dormant inthe soil for long periods, with the plant springing back up quickly at the next disturbance.

Like many species in the forget-me-not family, poodle-dog bush causes severe irritation if touched, akin to poison oak. It can raise blisters lasting as long as several weeks. There may be a delay of several days before the reaction starts. The hairs stick to skin and clothing. Once the immune system has been sensitized to the irritant, later exposure can cause a memory response, in which previously exposed areas erupt even though they were not exposed a second time. Because of this there are warning signs posted in areas where it grows to prevent people from touching it.

Porthgwarra is a relatively unknown Cornish Cove, largely owned by Lord St Levan (of St. Michael’s Mount). It is located just under 3 miles southeast of Land’s End. Once a thriving fishing cove, it now enjoys a peaceful existence surrounded by local wildlife.

Porthgwarra Beach is a popular spot for birdwatching, with a variety of seabirds and raptors visible from the cliffs. Dolphins or seals can sometimes be seen in the sea too. At low tide there is a very small beach, with an array of interesting rock pools and caves. Swimming is relatively safe within the confines of the Cove.

One of Porthgwarra's most interesting features is the cave running through part of the cliff; there is a rope to hang on to as it is treacherously slippery. Sometimes in the evening, bats may be seen flying in and out of the cave.

Porthgwarra Beach has a rich history, and visitors can explore the cove's network of tunnels which were once used for smuggling. There are also lots of reminders of Porthgwarra's fishing heritage, although today only one boat regularly works crab pots from there. However, its appearance in the hit TV series, Poldark, has gone some way to preserving memories of the harsh realities of fishing for pilchards in the eighteenth century.
