Wandering the back alleys of Vancouver's Mount Pleasant community checking out Vancouver Mural Festival (VMF) works.

This mural from the 2018 VMF "No Rain, No Flowers" is by Jamie Smith, Tara Lee Bennett, and Crissy Arseneau.

“No Rain No Flowers” is a group mural painted by members of Thrive Art Studio, a Vancouver mastermind group supporting female visual artists from around the world by providing the community and accountability necessary to help them achieve their personal and professional goals.

Thrive’s motto is to make art, meet your people and do the work.

The mural is located at 127 E. 8th Avenue.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

Crissy Arseneau:

Arseneau is a Canadian artist living and working in Vancouver primarily in hand-painted and hand-cut paper.

Her watercolour paper sculpture and collage work explores memory and place, attention and contemplation, and order and repetition, with a focus on the spaces where the natural and built environments meet.

Jamie Smith:

Jamie Smith creates artwork that layers her memories of traveling, family stories and lost places. She began her artistic career by completing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the University of Victoria and later receiving her Bachelor of Arts Education from the University of British Columbia.

Her work is heavily influenced by her years abroad in Latin America, living in the Middle East and backpacking around Eastern Europe. Smith settled in Vancouver in 2012 to focus on her art practice.

In 2014, She started an annual community art walk in Mount Pleasant called ROVE that connects locals with the artists around them.

In 2015 Jamie founded THRIVE, a studio to support female artists.

Tara Lee Bennett:

Tara Lee Bennett is a paper artist living and working in Vancouver.

Originally from Africa, Bennett lived in Australia for several years where she attended the Enmore Design Center in Sydney. Her popular mini plant series led to projects with Urban Outfitters, Tide and Today’s Parent. After moving to Canada, Bennett co-founded THRIVE Art Studio, a global membership community of visual artists.

Her current series Lush is infused with images of growth and renewal reflecting both the personal and professional journeys of her life. These monochromatic works are hand cut out of paper.

Artists' Statement:

Without the rain in Vancouver we would not have the green mountains, trees and plants we love. Just like all great things in life you don't get the reward without the work. You don't get the flowers without the rain.
