Burchell's (or Plains) Zebra (Equus quagga burchellii). Burchell's are a southern subspecies of the plains zebra with a characteristic shadow stripe that runs between the thicker black and white stripes. South Africa. Conservation status: Near Threatened
Along with the red knobbed coot it is among the most threatened aquatic species in the Iberian Peninsula.
Globally it´s considerated Vulnerable , its range being the Mediterranean and part of Asia. In Europe its greatest representation is in Spain, especially in the marshes of Guadalquivir and the Hondo (where I made the photo). In Spain it is critically endangered, with multiple efforts to save its populations from extinction.
Its favorite habitats are Mediterranean marshes and shallow wetlands and its diet consists of seeds of plants or aquatic insects.

En España se encuentra en peligro crÃtico de extinción, realizándose múltiples esfuerzos para salvar sus poblaciones de la extinción.
Sus hábitats predilectos son las marismas y humedales someros mediterráneos y su dieta se compone de semillas de plantas e insectos acuáticos.

Today marks the 1 month anniversary since my mother passed away. Amazing how fast time flies. It feels like I lost her yesterday. I just wish I could get her back. Since I can’t I am trying to take comfort in nature. I know she would of loved to see this beautiful Barn Owl that flew by. Barn Owls are threatened here in their northern range so to see one is always a special treat.

Dippers are members of the genus Cinclus in the bird family Cinclidae, named for their bobbing or dipping movements. They are unique among passerines for their ability to dive and swim underwater.
They have a characteristic bobbing motion when perched beside the water, giving them their name. While under water, they are covered by a thin, silvery film of air, due to small bubbles being trapped on the surface of the plumage.
Dippers are found in suitable freshwater habitats in the highlands of the Americas, Europe and Asia. In Africa they are only found in the Atlas Mountains of Morocco. They inhabit the banks of fast-moving upland rivers with cold, clear waters, though, outside the breeding season, they may visit lake shores and sea coasts.
The high haemoglobin concentration in their blood gives them a capacity to store oxygen greater than that of other birds, allowing them to remain underwater for thirty seconds or more, whilst their basal metabolic rate is approximately one-third slower than typical terrestrial passerines of similar mass. One small population wintering at a hot spring in Suntar-Khayata Mountains of Siberia feeds underwater when air temperatures drop below −55 °C (−67 °F).
Dippers are completely dependent on fast-flowing rivers with clear water, accessible food and secure nest-sites. They may be threatened by anything that affects these needs such as water pollution, acidification and turbidity caused by erosion. River regulation through the creation of dams and reservoirs, as well as channelization, can degrade and destroy dipper habitat.
Dippers are also sometimes hunted or otherwise persecuted by humans for various reasons. The Cyprus race of the white-throated dipper is extinct. In the Atlas Mountains dippers are claimed to have aphrodisiacal properties. In parts of Scotland and Germany, until the beginning of the 20th century, bounties were paid for killing dippers because of a misguided perception that they were detrimental to fish stocks through predation on the eggs and fry of salmonids.

Kranich (Grus grus) - common crane
Der Kranich (Grus grus), auch Grauer Kranich oder Eurasischer Kranich, ist ein Vertreter der Familie der Kraniche (Gruidae). In Europa kommt er weitgehend als einzige Kranichart vor; erst ab der Schwarzmeerregion beginnt das Verbreitungsgebiet des Jungfernkranichs. Kraniche bewohnen Sumpf- und Moorlandschaften in weiten Teilen des nördlichen und östlichen Europas, aber auch einige Gebiete im Norden Asiens. Sie nehmen das ganze Jahr über sowohl tierische als auch pflanzliche Nahrung auf. Der Bestand hat in den letzten Jahrzehnten stark zugenommen, so dass die Art zurzeit nicht gefährdet ist.
Die Schönheit der Kraniche, ihre spektakulären Balztänze und ihr gut zu beobachtender Zug haben schon in früher Zeit die Menschen fasziniert. In der griechischen Mythologie war der Kranich Apollon, Demeter und Hermes zugeordnet. Er war ein Symbol der Wachsamkeit und Klugheit und galt als „Vogel des Glücks“. In der Heraldik ist der Kranich das Symbol der Vorsicht und der schlaflosen Wachsamkeit. In der Dichtung steht der Kranich symbolisch für das Erhabene in der Natur.

The common crane (Grus grus), also known as the Eurasian crane, is a bird of the family Gruidae, the cranes. A medium-sized species, it is the only crane commonly found in Europe besides the demoiselle crane (Anthropoides virgo). Along with the sandhill (Grus canadensis) and demoiselle cranes and the brolga (Grus rubicunda), it is one of only four crane species not currently classified as threatened with extinction or conservation dependent on the species level. Despite the species' large numbers, local extinctions and extirpations have taken place in part of its range, and an ongoing reintroduction project is underway in the United Kingdom.
The sky looked promising for something like out of "The Wizard of Oz", nope; just a big tease! 10 day forecast hot and dry, triple digit temps possible for the weekend. Very disappointed.
I recently lost my cat after 12 wonderful years to cancer. His death has hit me hard. So I wanted to upload some happy memories. Here is a few photos of threatened Lesser Prairie -Chickens from Kansas. Seeing them dance on the lek was one of my happiest memories. I hope that future generations will continue to be able to see this spectacle. Their numbers are severely declining due to habitat loss, agriculture and hunting. It is imperative we do all we can to save and conserve the precious grasslands.
They're threatened when the camera jumps ahead of me. Todd Kovich was pissed when I brought my Nikon to the prom, but I'd missed too many transcendent shots over the years to ever take a chance of missing one again. A prom, I told him, had a boundless supply of photogenic bozos who could be counted on to do something base :-)

The Dalmatian pelican can grow up to 1.8 metres in length – that’s 5ft 9. They have a wingspan of almost three metres and weigh more than 10kg.
The avian influenza wave of 2022 affected the Near Threatened Dalmatian pelican (Pelecanus crispus) in most of its European range, but the effect on the Lesser (Mikri) Prespa Lake colony, in north-west Greece, the largest colony of the species, was devastating.
The first deaths were recorded in mid February, a week after the first Dalmatian pelicans arrived at Prespa. In the following weeks, the mortality rate peaked, then slowed down after mid March and ceased by the end of April. All dead pelicans were adults in breeding plumage. Laboratory results indicated the highly pathogenic H5N1 strain, clade 2.3.4.4b. By the end of April, 1,734 Dalmatian pelicans had died, c. 60% of the colony.
On January 3, 2023 I was out with my camera in Logan County when notification was received on my phone that a tornado warning had just been issued. The warning ended my shoot and I called my wife to let her know I was heading home. As I approached an overpass I noticed this scene with a very threatening sky to the east, but the fields in front of me were still brightly lit from the golden hour sunshine coming from the southwest. I pulled my SUV to the side of the road and got out to photograph the scene.
When all was said and done, there were eight confirmed tornados to the east and northeast of Springfield that afternoon landing in Sangamon, Logan, Macon, and McLean counties in central Illinois. Three were determined by the NWS to be EF-1, two were EF-0, and three were unknown. Fortunately, there were no reports of injuries and the most visible damage was to farm outbuildings.
