When you have finished sewing down the plastic pocket then sew on the binding. I used the same method I would use for putting binding on a quilt, but you could use bias binding or even just satin stitch around the edge of the fabric sandwhich - it's really up to you. Don't forget to sew on the ribbon which will tie the thread holder together when it's rolled up.

They are about 3 inches, 7.5 cm.
The hooks are free of nickel.

Handmade brass and embroidery thread charm with beads for a swap in Fiber Art Traders group. I had grand plans of making at least 4 for the swap, but I took forever to cut and file this one, and beat my hands up. I decided to just trade this one, and do some sewing for a while.

Some of this thread is sooooo old, it is from Grant's Department Store from 1967 and it cost 20 cents!
Every year, citizen scientists assist park staff with butterfly counts across the North Rim. This year, participants worked with NPS staff and Grand Canyon Conservancy Field Institute to help monitor the pollinators. This was an excellent opportunity to be part of the scientific work that the park does to understand the butterflies of the Kaibab Plateau.
Comparisons of the results across the years are used to monitor changes in butterfly populations and study the effects of weather and habitat change on butterflies. This research aims to catalog species richness and abundance of butterflies in the Grand Canyon National Park region. This cataloging effort supplements and compares data from previous butterfly counts conducted and specimen data collected from the 1930s–1950s by John Garth.

I saw Chinese thread books online and fell in love. I was doing a zentangle project…and decided to combine the two. Origami and I are not the best of friends…yet…so I had to make SO many boxes to get what I wanted…and ended up with 3 books. The boxes open in different ways and are stacked on top of each other to hold thread, pattern pieces, small scissors, buttons…etc. SO much fun!

Views of the pincushion and needles used in the project. indigo dyed hemp cloth, machine and hand sewn, hand forged sterling silver needles, handspun 2-ply silk thread.
The pincushion is stuffed with lead fishing weights and fiberfill. It is shaped like a barrel indigo vat, and it's actual heavy weight is symbolic for me of the weight of the 20 gallon vat, in the sense that the vat is not often moved; one must go to it. The place where the vat is, is like roots, or home, which grad school was for three years. Then like a child leaving the nest when it's time, I "moved" this vat with me, in the form of this pincushion, to a new home, where I then made my own 25 gallon vat in 2002, which is my vat today.
