A big thank you to all for your visits, your comments, and your favorites too, which are always very much appreciated.
I publish an archive photo of this butterfly because for the past two years I have seen a marked decrease in insects in my region.
I live in an area of intensive cultivation with pesticides for its crops and tractors that crush weeds and therefore insects ...
I am worried about nature and the future.
The Sylvaine or Ochlodes sylvanus is the most common species of small short-winged butterflies (Family Hesperiidae) in France.
This butterfly has the particularity of having very developed thoracic muscles allowing a beating of wings up to 20 beats per second.
Hybos culiciformis can reach a size of 3.5 to 5.5 mm. It has large yellowish thoracic setae, row of setae on the mid femur and strong setae on mid tibiae. Mesonotum is finely dusted. It flies from June to September and feeds on small insects.

The eastern lubber grasshopper is limited to the southeastern and south central portion of the United States The northern boundary is central North Carolina west through southern Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas, to Texas. It occurs throughout Florida.
The lubber is surely the most distinctive grasshopper species within the southeastern United States. It is well known both for its size and its unique coloration. The wings offer little help with mobility for they are rarely more than half the length of the abdomen. This species is incapable of flight and can jump only short distances. Mostly the lubber is quite clumsy and slow in movement and travels by walking and crawling feebly over the substrate.
Eastern lubber grasshoppers possess a variety of abilities to defend themselves. Their bright color pattern is a warning to predators that the lubber contains toxic substances. Indeed, there are several records attributing the demise of individual birds to failure to exercise caution when selecting prey items. Also small mammals such as opossums have been known to vomit violently after ingesting a lubber, and to remain ill for several hours. If the red, yellow, and black coloration fails to keep a predator at bay, then the lubber may secrete a foamy spray from the thoracic region (the portion of the body where the legs and wings are attached.) This spray consists of a number of compounds, some of which, are irritants. This bubbly froth is accompanied by a relatively loud, frightful hissing sound. The insect contracts the abdomen to force air out of the spiracles along with the defensive secretion. The sound is produced as the spray is being forced out of these tiny holes in the thorax called spiracles. Eastern lubbers, like most all grasshoppers, can also regurgitate recently consumed plant material. This regurgitant is mostly liquid and has a dark brown color. This is commonly referred to as 'tobacco spit.' The tobacco spit is partially digested food material along with some semi-toxic compounds from the insect's crop region. This substance can easily stain clothing.
I found this nasty but colorful beast at Coleman Landing County Park, in Polk County, Florida.

Panorpa communis can reach a body length of about 30 millimetres (1.2 in). The common scorpionfly has a black and yellow body, with a reddish head and tail. The male has a pair of claspers at the end of its tail (for holding the female during mating), giving it a scorpion-like appearance, although it is not a stinger.
The adult insect has a wingspan of about 35 millimetres (1.4 in), with wings that are mostly clear, but have many dark spots or patches. Its head, mounted with large eyes, is drawn into a prominent, downward pointing beak, which opens at the tip of its head.
In the female, the eighth abdominal segment is the shortest, almost twice shorter than the seventh; the sixth is narrowed towards the back. The larva resembles a caterpillar and grows up to 20 millimetres (0.79 in) long. It has three pairs of thoracic legs and eight pairs of prolegs.
The adult is seen between May and September. They eat dead insects (although they sometimes eat live aphids), sometimes taking them from spider webs and plant sap.
Although fully winged, the adults rarely fly very far and spend much of their time crawling on vegetation in damp, shaded places near water and along hedgerows. Panorpa communis is a univoltine species. Eggs are laid in soil annually and the larvae both scavenge and pupate there.
Sabellidae, or feather duster worms, are a family of marine polychaete tube worms characterized by protruding feathery branchiae. Sabellids build tubes out of a tough, parchment-like exudate, strengthened with sand and bits of shell. Unlike the other sabellids, the genus Glomerula secretes a tube of calcium carbonate instead. Sabellidae can be found in subtidal habitats around the world. Their oldest fossils are known from the Early Jurassic. Feather-duster worms have a crown of feeding appendages or radioles in two fan-shaped clusters projecting from their tubes when under water. Each radiole has paired side branches making a two-edged comb for filter feeding. Most species have a narrow collar below the head. The body segments are smooth and lack parapodia. The usually eight thoracic segments bear capillaries dorsally and hooked chaetae (bristles) ventrally. The abdominal segments are similar, but with the position of the capillaries and chaetae reversed. The posterior few abdominal segments may form a spoon-shaped hollow on the ventral side. Size varies between tiny and over 10 cm (2.5 in) long. Some small species can bend over and extend their tentacles to the sea floor to collect detritus. (Wikipedia) Mabini, South Luzon, Philippines.
Sympetrum vulgatum
Vagrant Darter Dragonfly.
Adults. Adult body about 33–36–39 mm long. Average wingspan 60 mm; hindwings 26–28 mm long.
The eyes dorsally narrowly apposed to dorsally broadly contiguous; brown, or red (or reddish brown). The narrow black band at the base of the frons conspicuously continued for some distance down the inner sides of the eyes.
Thoracic antehumeral stripes present to absent (if detectable, less conspicuous than in some other dragonflies); brown (somewhat paler against the brown thorax). The wings spread more or less horizontally in repose; dissimilar in shape and venation; sessile; very briefly suffused with colour at their bases only. The tinting amber (or saffron). The inner wing venation (reddish-) brown. Discoidal cell divided longitudinally into a conspicuous triangle and supra-triangle. Antenodal veins in the forewings 6–8 (fewer in the hindwings). Pterostigma reddish brown, or red (ruddy, and black edged).

This large and colorful dragonfly has several close cousins in the darner family. Their thoracic stripes are often key to ID. On this one, its front thoracic stripe constricts a wee bit at the center. These dragonflies are ferocious predators and like to attack small moths such as the spear-marked black.

Shot 4 days ago @ the wetlands, North Georgia. The front yellow (not green) thoracic stripes were the first thing I noticed before I approached.
First, I thought I encountered Deutonura conjuncta, because we are quite far from the Pyrenees.
But I see two setae on the dorso-internal tubercles of the 1st thoracic segment.
I believe there are only 2 bristles on the dorso-lateral tubercles of the 1st to 3rd abdominal segment (but an indication of their position on my photo would help me because I am not sure of their location).
So it would rather be a somewhat nordic monticola?

I collected some springtails in the garden from my sister Annie in Kaulille. Thanks Annie :-) She has a lot of Entomobrya nivalis in her garden.
I gave the springtail a tulip to discover...
In this dorsal shot you can see that in nivalis the U-ornamentation never touches the posterior segment margin.
Forma dorsalis of nivalis: note thoracic dorsal pigmentation is absent/indistinct.
This I learned from Frans Janssens :-) Thanks Frans !
I never expected to see a Yellow-sided skimmer in September since they are usually an early Spring sighting - if at all. She had an odd appearance from my first view here and I wondered if she was an old Spangled skimmer at first with faded "spangles". But then those yellow wings and the thoracic markings.

A proleg is a small, fleshy, stub structure found on the ventral surface of the abdomen of most larval forms of insects of the order Lepidoptera, though they can also be found on other larval insects such as sawflies and a few other types of insects. In all the orders in which they appear, mainly Hymenoptera and Lepidoptera, prolegs of any form evolved independently of each other by convergent evolution.[1]
Prolegs of lepidopteran larvae have a small circle of gripping hooks, called "crochets". The arrangement of the crochets can be helpful in identification to family level.[2] Although the point has been debated, prolegs are not widely regarded as true legs, derived from the primitive uniramous limbs. Certainly in their morphology they are not jointed, and so lack the five segments (coxa, trochanter, femur, tibia, tarsus) of thoracic insect legs. Prolegs do have limited musculature, but much of their movement is hydraulically powered.

Early on a cold winter morning, this beautiful silver-striped hawk moth was a sight to behold.
I stayed with it for 25 minutes watching it alternate between being at rest, then vibrating its wings - and what was really great to see was the increased speed by which it did that, as the minutes passed and it gradually became warmer. This pre-flight thermoregulation involves the muscles being contracted to create only a minimal amount of wing movement, which produces as much heat as possible to elevate thoracic temperatures to flight-levels. Eventually, it flew off.
Larvae of Hippotion celerio enjoy grapevine (Vitis sp.) hence the other common name of vine moth. I read that other host plants include Epilobium (willowherb), Fuchsia, Parthenocissus (Virginia creeper) and other related vines such as Cissus.
Seen here on native prostrate Hibbertia sp.

I had to go up to a reservoir to see this species - I've seen 2 fresh ones up there recently and they were the first in 2 years. They do fly at the wetlands & hopefully will show up there soon. I'm posting a view that shows her intensely green eyes, unique thoracic pattern and club - though males have a much larger club. A big clubtail: at least 2 1/2 inches long.
Some years I see these at several locations; other years I see none.
Our endless downpours continue. Happy Dragonfly Thursday!
A large spinyleg that I used to see more often but have thinned out in recent years. I've seen 2 in the last couple of weeks at two different locations. They have unique club & thoracic markings. Arrowhead WMA near Rome, Georgia

I have not seen green lateral and frontal thoracic stripes like this before on a Darner with such a blue and black abdomen.
Those were the sheep on April 24. They have so much wool, it must be their Ouessant heritage. The heavy wool makes them lazy. They prefer to lie around. But today, May 1, I sheared them. My ribs on the right side of the back at the height of the thoracic spine hurt so much, I can barely sit. Will lie down early.
THANKS FOR YOUR VISIT AND FAVES

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The word "giraffe" or "giraffe" comes from the Italian word giraffa.
The Romans called the giraffe camelopardalis, which literally means "camel leopard".
The giraffe has an extremely long neck, growing up to 2 m in length. A giraffe's neck can weigh up to 230 pounds. Just like humans and all other mammals, a giraffe has seven cervical vertebrae, only they are much longer. Each vertebra is then about 28 cm long. This comprises 52-54 percent of the spine, unlike other large ungulates, such as the giraffe's closest relative, the okapi, whose cervical vertebrae only comprise 27-33 percent of the spine. The lengthening of the neck largely takes place after birth, because otherwise giraffe mothers would have difficulty giving birth to a young that has a neck as long as an adult giraffe. The head and neck are held up by large muscles and the nuchae ligament, which are connected by dorsal spines to the thoracic vertebra, which then forms a hump. The cervical vertebrae have ball joints. The animal can tilt its head vertically through the atlas and axis vertebrae and reach more branches with the tongue.
Norman Bethune (1890-1939) was a Canadian thoracic surgeon, early advocate of socialized medicine, and member of the Communist Party of Canada. Bethune came to international prominence first for his service throughout the Spanish Civil War, and later supporting the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) during the Sino-Japanese war. Bethune helped bring modern medicine to rural China, treating both sick villagers and wounded soldiers. The People's Republic of China offered the statue of Norman Bethune to the city of Montreal in 1976.

I considered Piedmont Clubtail (Gomphus parvidens) but decided on Banner Clubtail (Gomphus apomyius) because of the thicker dark lateral thoracic stripe. Ref. Beaton p.196 and p.192.
This is a fairly small dragonfly - I’d say larger than an Eastern Amberwing but not by very much.

Dictyophorus spumans, the koppie foam grasshopper or rooibaadjie, is a species of grasshopper in the family Pyrgomorphidae indigenous to Africa. The name "foaming grasshopper" derives from the insect's ability to produce a toxic foam from its thoracic glands. It is closely related to Phymateus.
It grows up to a length of 80 millimetres (3.1 in). The neck shield has a warty surface, and their color is highly variable. It is toxic due to the poisons that it sequesters from its diet, which includes a large number of toxic and distasteful plants such as milkweed.
The other creature that it may be is
Phymateus is a genus of grasshoppers belonging to the Pyrgomorphidae family.
This species of the genus Phymateus are African locusts about 70 millimetres (2.8 in) long. Some species at maturity are capable of long migratory flights. They raise and rustle wings when disturbed and may secrete a noxious fluid from the thoracic joint.
These locusts feed on highly toxic plants and usually congregate in large numbers on trees and shrubs, arranged in such a way as to resemble foliage. Females of the species Phymateus morbillosus are unable to fly, despite fully developed wings.
I am not sure which species this is, but am inclined to think that it is a Common Milweed Locust. The only problem is that the creature was much, much larger than the 70 or 80 millimetres mentioned in relation to the above 2 creatures.

My heart aches. Doesn't it?
When the ribs stop moving, it causes considerable pain.
I know this well from my experience with thoracic vertebral blockages. The vertebra blocks and the ribs freeze.
The game also works the other way round. If the ribs don't move, then the vertebrae block.... And now?
The accident with the nasty thorax bruises has led to an 'armouring' of my ribcage. A self-playing system, a vicious circle.
The muscles harden more and more, the fasciae stick together..., the thoracic vertebrae block, etc.
So now the main pain is at the level of the heart, TH 3 and TH 4, mainly.
In fact, the whole thoracic spine was blocked, was treated extensively again yesterday by chiropractic.
I broke TH 3 and TH 4 in 2005 (and a bit more: C7 and TH 7 +8, the last two 'only' microfractured). So I have a predisposition.
A disturbance of TH 3 and 4 can lead to considerable pain in the heart area, some misinterpret this pain as a heart attack.
Prolonged problems in this area can lead to heart rhythm disorders.
I know all about it, I have experienced it.
And now?
Now I have what feels like a knife sitting in my heart area, stabbing again and again, deep.
But what if not only muscular, fascial and bony reasons have an influence on the interaction between ribs and vertebrae and this pain?
What if old wounds are torn open, things that went and go hard to the heart? And maybe not just one?
Then this vicious circle of the 3 sources playing off each other is fed.
My heart aches.
____
I'm very glad at the moment that my lower back decided to stay 'silent'.
All the therapy and pain - killers the last days are helping step by step. But most important is to escape from the circle. Otherwise it is a self feeding progress.
Name "click beetle" refers to the clicking sound which these beetles produce. They have flexible connection (that acts like elastic device) between the first and second thoracic segment.
Foam Grasshopper / Cavalletta Spumosa
Foam Grasshoppers (Dictyophorus spumans pulchra) are distinguished by their bright colors. The name "foam grasshopper" derives from the insect's ability to produce a toxic foam from its thoracic glands.
Le Cavallette Spumose si distinguono per i loro colori vivaci. Il nome "cavalletta spumosa" deriva della capacità dell'insetto di produrre una schiuma tossica dalle ghiandole toraciche.

The wheel bug, Arilus cristatus (Linnaeus), is a moderately common, widely distributed, beneficial assassin bug that preys on pest insects. However, its bite can be more severe than a bee sting, and both nymphs and adults should be avoided or handled with caution. The wheel bug adult usually measures from 1 to 1.25 inches long. This assassin bug is a dark, robust creature with long legs and antennae, a stout beak, large eyes on a slim head, and a prominent thoracic, semicircular crest that resembles a cogwheel or chicken's comb. This is the only insect species in the United States with such a crest.
