ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet landed on the steppe of Kazakhstan on 2 June 2017 with Russian commander Oleg Novitsky in their Soyuz MS-03 spacecraft after six months in space. Touchdown was at 14:10 GMT after a four-hour flight from the International Space Station.
Thomas spent six months on the International Space Station as part of his Proxima mission. During Proxima, Thomas took part in 60 scientific experiments for ESA and France’s space agency CNES and the international Station partners.
The mission is part of ESA’s vision to use Earth-orbiting spacecraft as a place to live and work for the benefit of European society while using the experience to prepare for future voyages of exploration further into the Solar System.

Schloss Dyck, located in Jüchen, Germany, is one of the Rhineland's most significant moated castles. Dating back to the 11th century, the complex as it stands today is a beautiful example of Baroque architecture, featuring a grand four-winged main building surrounded by a network of defensive stone walls and deep, water-filled moats. For over 900 years, it served as the ancestral seat of the Salm-Reifferscheidt-Dyck family before transitioning into a public cultural foundation focused on garden art and historical preservation.
The castle is internationally renowned for its spectacular English landscape garden, which was redesigned in the early 19th century by the famous Scottish garden architect Thomas Blaikie. An actor impersonates Thomas Alva Edison. Just to inform you, this actor looks very much like the young Edison. He was nicknamed "The Wizard of Menlo Park" because of his many inventions. Edison was not the first to "invent" the light bulb, but he was the first to make the light bulb "practical." He had the philosophy that one should never give up and that every failure brought a person closer to the success he desired.

Touchdown was at 14:10 GMT after a four-hour flight from the International Space Station. Afterwards Thomas and Oleg returned to Karaganda airport for a welcoming ceremony. Thomas then returned to Cologne, in Germany, where he will stay for a short while for post-flight testing and recovery.

St. Thomas the Apostle, one of the 12 disciples of Jesus Christ is believed to have travelled to India around 52 AD. Though there is no irrefutable ‘evidence’ of his visit, literature as early as Third Century AD refers to St. Thomas’s work in India. He is supposed to have visited Gujarat and then traveled to Kerala, where he spent most of his apostolic work. From Kerala where he converted high caste Hindus and established seven and a half Churches, he moved to Mylapore near Chennai. He is said to have converted the sister of the local ruler to Christianity, leading to much palace intrigues and conspiracies. While Thomas was meditating on a small hillock near the present day Chennai International Airport, he was killed by an arrow of assassin, said to be the opponents of the Princess’s conversion. This hillock is today known as St. Thomas Mount.
When the Portuguese who arrived in India in 1498, they were surprised to see people worshiping Jesus Christ. However, the Roman Catholic Church refused to acknowledge the visit of St. Thomas to India and his conversion of local people to Christianity. It was only in the 20th Century that the Roman Catholic Church, grudgingly accepted the fact that the Indian Christian Church was established by St.Thomas, the Apostle. The Portuguese who occupied the hill in the early 16th Century, built a small church there in 1523 and dedicated it to “Our Lady of Expectation”, Mother Mary, in all probability to obliterate the St. Thomas legacy. Locally, this hill was referred to as ‘Parangi Malai’, meaning the hill of the parangi (derived from firangi) meaning the white man.

Human spaceflight and operations image of the week: ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet testing Skinsuit in weightlessness
Astronauts have been known to grow by up to 7 cm as their spines lengthen in weightlessness. As a result, many suffer from backache during their missions. ESA is supporting the development of a suit designed to combat the lack of gravity effects by squeezing the body from the shoulders to the feet with a similar force to that felt on Earth.
Each Skinsuit is tailor-made for its wearer with a bidirectional weave. The suits need to fit tightly but comfortable, while creating the right amount of force in the right places.
ESA astronaut Thomas Pesquet tested his Skinsuit on a parabolic flight in March. Tilted at 45°, an Airbus offers up to 20 seconds of weightlessness at each apex of its rollercoaster ride.
ESA astronaut Andreas Mogensen will be the first astronaut to evaluate the Skinsuit in space when he leaves for the International Space Station next year. Thomas will follow Andreas to the orbiting laboratory in 2016.
ESA’s Space Medicine Office is working with the universities of Kings College and University College in London, England, and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA, to test the suit prototypes.
