heading back up to the Marlborough sounds for an extended weekend and an opportunity to stretch the legs again in our stunning backcountry.. The weather is suggesting we might be in a for a bit more drama and a bit less sunbathing this trip :)

This shot was made over new year back at the start of 2019, it's a view looking out from Mt Stokes

Hiding under a brolly to keep the rain off the polariser..

One of the last opportunities for me this year to get out for an astro shoot. This time with an enthusiastic bunch from Greymouth Photography Club and pretty much perfect conditions :)

The seven deadly Flickr sins!

This is a very 'Dave' image in the truest sense of the word. It's not about the image, it's about what the image means to me. As I rocked up at the Vero centre, I was greeted by their security and buildings guy and asked to sign the forms etc. I was asked if I'd like to go on the roof, which was a bit of a surprise as it certainly wasn't ever outlined as being on the agenda. I seem to remember saying something along the lines of "Well I've come all the way from Wellington it'd be rude not to take a look!" And so the indemnity was signed...

By the time I'd finished shooting inside a new guy was in charge, shifts having moved over etc, who was an ex South African military chap. If you look closely in the photo, you'll see him hovering in the corner. What came to be as I was introduced and made idle chit chat, as we ascended the lifts and dark stair cases was a sense of understanding. Here was he, escorting me onto the roof of one of Auckland's most infamous buildings so I could take photos. No viewing gallery, no gloss or drama, just a wall and a long drop, and some very gusty winds. I was confronted with an awesome view, one not unlike that from the Sky tower, as it's about the same height, but one which was infinitely more exclusive. My new friend explained how recently he'd been up there and seen nothing but the spike of the tower as it poked through the cloud, and he could look down on Auckland under its blanket. How they came up here to see the fireworks at New Years from the best seat in the house. How essentially, through being part of the team behind this building, he got so many perks and so much satisfaction.

I stood there, wide eyed, soul wide open, thanking whoever it may be for being quite so god-damned-lucky to have been given the chance to see this. The string of events that came to be in order for me to end up photographing the building are a novel in itself, but I just felt hugely lucky and grateful to those events. Life sometimes, amongst all the crap, can deal you a good hand you know.

And so we went back downstairs, and we chatted. We talked about how we found life in New Zealand after living elsewhere, and why we came to be here. It's a common thing amongst non-Kiwis, to have this sense of utter gratitude for what we have in being granted access to this place. I couldn't have felt any more grateful to have met anyone than I did in meeting my South African friend that day. We read each other's comments and faces and knew we understood. We are so lucky to be here.
