Numbers control people's lives, whether you like it or not.
Think of money - the price of things, your mortgage, debt, income etc.
Think of things like popularity - how many friends you have, how many of the latest to-have item you own, and so on.
How many sales you make, how many people you make smile, how much time it takes to do something, what speed you drive at. Quantities speak, statistics can manipulate and convince, they are their own language. Numbers.
It's not pathetic, it's human.
Some numbers are just far more destructive than others.
