Here is some awesome video I shot at the same time as the stills with the Sony Alpha NEX 6 camera with the 16-50 mm power zoom kit lens for nex6 e mount cameras bracketed to my Nikon D800:

Combine the shallow-depth-of-field with Sony NEX-6 latest face-tracking auto focus, and you can see how the moving video keeps the model's pretty blue eyes in focus, while blurring the background! The Sony Alpha NEX 6 has much better bokeh than the cameras I have been using! :)

The ice is just about gone off some of the lakes in our area. This must definately be a record for the snow to be gone from the woods, and the majority of waterways opening up.
I think this photo is worth a view in large size. You can make out the thin ice that refroze over the bay during the previous evening. I was happy to get this photo before my dog dove in the water and disturbed the thin ice.
Lyrics from Pink Floyd's "The Thin Ice".....not the happiest of songs, but they certainly get the point across.

My oh my, it is a mylonite
This fault contact of the Pre-Cambrian gneiss and the late Tertiary to early Quaternary Death Valley sediments is located at the head of the little side canyon shown in the last photograph.
Ignoring the paltry 3 or 4 million years since the sediments on the right were deposited, this contact represents a difference of about 1.7 billion years often written as 1,700 my. It also contains lots of faults besides my own photographic shortcomings. It is the Badwater Turtleback fault surface.
The young sediments on the right have been moving to the right in rotated fault blocks toward the deep Badwater basin. These normal faults all sole out and merge along the contact and the Badwater Turtle fault.
The gneiss here is special with the recrystalized rock showing ductile flowing deformation. We call this kind of gneiss a myolinite.
The deformation is also special here because it abrubtly changes at the lower right hand of the banded black and white rock (the myolinitic gneiss). To the left, the white pegmatites have been squeezed horizontally while in the lower right they are squeezed vertically. If you look very closely at this area, you can see a thin meandering white line that marks the boundary between these two zones. This could be a fault that was later deformed or it may just be an irregularity in the mylonite.
A current theory has some of the deformation in these rocks occuring late, only about 10 million years ago when these rocks were buried more than ten miles deep. The first phase of extension was occuring then and this deformation may represent the deep strain of the extension where the brittle deformation of the overlying fault slowly merges with ductile deformation of the myolinite due to the depth of burial of the rocks.
I took this hike to try and see the gneiss close up. I had no idea that this side canyon contained so many interesting outcrops. It was my own one day exploration complete with unexpected surprises which often accompany exploration.
