Bow Building

Wonderland by Jaume Plensa

The Bow is the most recognizable building in the Calgary skyline. You can see it from almost anywhere in Calgary and it is an impressive skyscraper. All pictures and postcards of the Calgary skyline had to be updated once the Bow was completed in 2012. It is that impressive.

Spanish artist Jaume Plensa created a giant sculpture called Wonderland at the base of The Bow. The wire mesh piece stands 39 feet high and resembles a young girl’s head. (It was actually inspired by a real girl in Spain.)

Architects: Prack and Prack / Bernard H. Prack

Date: 1927

Pier 27 Condos Phase 1+2, 39 Queens Quay E.

From the harbour, this waterfront condo development, designed by Peter Clewes of architectsAlliance and located between Sugar Beach and the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal, gives the illusion of a balancing act. A glass box appears to teeter over the edge of one building, with a 35-storey white tower resembling a tall stack of square plates next to it.

With slightly skewed top levels, to increase lake views, the four shorter rectangular buildings, representative of piers, are connected in pairs, by cantilevered “bridges,” appearing to be balanced on top, which architectsAlliance’s likens to “the gantries used to load cargo on and off freighters in Toronto Harbour.” The bridges actually contain condo units, which at 2,500 square feet — plus outdoor decks — feature more space than many local houses.

Japanese festivals are traditional festive occasions. Some festivals have their roots in Chinese festivals but have undergone dramatic changes as they mixed with local customs.

There are also various local festivals that are mostly unknown outside a given prefecture. It is commonly said that you will always find a festival somewhere in Japan.

Visitors to Burlington’s downtown area after Aug. 21 might have noticed an impressive new piece of art just off the corner of Lakeshore Road and John Street. The colourful piece covers a full wall in a central part of the city.

The main mural is the work of artist Kane and Steam and more of their work can be found on Instagram @kane.ism and @steampaints.

The piece was unveiled on Aug. 21 as part of an event hosted by BUDSSMOKE – a new cannabis retailer.

Sian Thusyanth, the COO with BUDSSMOKE, said the company prides itself on its connection to art. “It's our way to say thank you for all the love and support that we've gotten from the Burlington community. And we're definitely wanting everyone to come out here, take pictures, check it out and check us out.”

Toronto is the most populous city in Canada and the provincial capital of Ontario. It is located in Southern Ontario on the northwestern shore of Lake Ontario. With over 2.5 million residents, it is the fifth most populous municipality in North America. Toronto is at the heart of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), and is part of a densely populated region in Southern Ontario known as the Golden Horseshoe, which is home to 8.1 million residents and has approximately 25% of Canada's population.[3][4][5] The census metropolitan area (CMA) had a population of 5,113,149,[1] and the Greater Toronto Area had a population of 5,555,912 in the 2006 Census.[4]

As Canada's economic capital, Toronto is considered a global city[6] and is one of the top financial centres in the world.[7][8] Toronto's leading economic sectors include finance, business services, telecommunications, aerospace, transportation, media, arts, film, television production, publishing, software production, medical research, education, tourism and sports industries.[9][10] The Toronto Stock Exchange, the world's seventh largest, is headquartered in the city, along with a majority of Canada's corporations.

Illustrator and artist Alanna Cavanagh has put her drawings on just about everything over the last 20 years, from her own silkscreen to tea towels, temporary tattoos, magazine stories and postage stamps. Then, during the pandemic, real estate companies starting calling her to create murals, often to perk up sad-looking, empty storefronts.

That work got big this summer, literally, with Cavanagh creating five murals called Big City Blooms for QuadReal Property Group.

“They wanted me to create really colourful pieces that would counteract all the grey of the last two years,” says Cavanagh, noting that the company also wanted to welcome employees and visitors back this summer.

The biggest mural, at nine metres by 37 metres, soars at Commerce Court, brightening up Bay Street with red, pink and orange flowers. Cavanagh created the mural on her iPad and printed it onto vinyl stickers. It took a work crew using a crane five days to install it.

They’re coming down in mid-September, a sad fact for Cavanagh, who’s been getting lots of message from observers via social.

I have been studying Canadian Photographers, and stumbled upon a book by Boris Spremo. He was a Canadian Photojournalist, won several awards. One of his images in the book was our very own Town clock. I tried to recreate the image, but have not found the correct perspective just yet. BUT I like this view of the town clock with the old building behind it and Dartmouth in the distance. This clock is a very popular spot for photographers.

The first 'big' snow storm hit Toronto last night. I came across this article:

Storm Lashes GTA

The first storm of winter lashed the Toronto area overnight and it’s going to get worse before it gets better.

The snow will become rain, heavy at times and then as temperatures drop overnight turn to snow again, making it a struggle to get to work on Monday.

Up to 10 cm of wind-whipped snow fell in outlying parts of the GTA overnight with about half that falling in communities near the lake.

Environment Canada is calling for periods of freezing rain with winds up to 50 km per hour to hit the area throughout the day as the temperature is expected to rise to a high of 2 degrees. And after all the rain falls, the mercury is expected to dip down to a low of 1 degree this evening as more snow moves into the area.

The Pietra bridge is a bridge of Verona on the Adige river, the only one left from the Roman era. The bridge is located in a point that since prehistoric times had to present a ford, a crucial meeting point between different ways of communication to which we owe the birth of the city of Verona.

“Enemy of Justice is Ignorance”

Created by Elicser Elliott in 2020. Located at 975 Danforth Ave.

“In the middle of painting another mural on an adjacent wall, the verdict for Breonna Taylor was released. I felt the door got more justice than Breonna Taylor. So I thought we, my friends and I, should illustrate how we felt.

“So right behind the main mural that we were commissioned to create, there is this wall, which we painted around the same time, just talking about how similar things still are to 1955, when Emmett Till’s mother decided to leave his casket open, so everyone could see the atrocities these men did to him. And then in 2020, kind of the same things happen. There’s no justice for the family.

“The mural is a sombre piece and it illustrates the facts right in front of the audience. So I think that provokes a great deal of conversation. I feel it’s my duty as a Black artist to shine a light on some of these ideas. Then a conversation can happen.”

MaRS Phase 2 building, University Avenue, Toronto. "MaRS"? The organization was originally named for its role in developing new business initiatives in "Medical and Related Sciences". But the name stuck even after MaRS broadened its reach as an innovation hub, as a high tech entrepreneurial incubator aimed at commercializing discoveries in Canadian medicine, science, engineering, info tech, communications, and fields of social development .
