Thermostat read -18 F when I hit the shutter

If my house gets toasty-hot during the weekday while I'm at work, it must be summertime.

(Yes, it's a fancy thermostat, but it controls an old-school wall heater, whose gas is turned off for the summer. I got it for its scheduling functions.)

This is my thermostat in my 100 year old house at the worst of it yesterday ... my air conditioner just can't keep up with the temperatures lately. I turn it up to the best temp it reaches to give it a rest. Supposed to be the last day (God please) of this heat wave here.

OBTW, the thermostat was soooooo dirty I had to texturize my stupid shot. This was a Rustic Grunge texture ... that's me of late ... rustic and grungy.

I have been lost in Photoshop. I was having ideas in Lightroom and they led to edits and on to Photoshop CS and from there they are stretching out towards some notion of motion pictures. I have not used this Film Temperature Control System. I have been calling a film cooker. It looks superb and it comes with a three pin U.K. Plug fitted ready for accurate simmering film into tender toner and sharpish shadows and might fine highlights.

I have used two fonts to give °CineStill a look as it has in the packaging.

I forget to mention the soundtrack. Two tracks from those provided by my editing service with no composers and players listed. I have edited tracks individually and together. All errors on me and all praise to unknown originators of music. I wish that I had some names to praise.

Someone raised the temperature on the thermostat and everyone is too hot.

a detail of a 10'x6' metal sign that would greet you near the guard shack of the visitor lot. Someone pried out the clock that was in the opposite corner, but I think the thermometer might still work, because it was just about 50 degrees that day. I took a photo of this five years ago, and remember thinking "this would look so great taking up the entire wall of a kitchen as a giant magnetic memo board" but feeling like stripping sites of their charm ruins it for everyone else, but now when I see it shot to hell and tagged and rusting away, I kind of wish it had been installed somewhere else.

It's all hocus-pocus to me... I just followed the directions. "RTFM" and all that... (yes, it's working fine and is a big improvement over the old one)

When new, this thermostat enclosure was white in color like the wall it was mounted on. About twenty years of exposure to UV light has caused this discoloration. I am not a plastics engineer and wouldn't know if UV light has caused any structural damage to the plastic enclosure of the thermostat. I have replaced it with the latest I could fit in my budget. Most likely the new one will also suffer discoloration in the next twenty years...if I am still around to see it.

Changing the setting of the thermostat on "Automatic Cooling" mode. Fan at normal speed only at first, then the compressor starts, and as I turn the thermostat to cooler, the fan switches to higher speed for maximum cooling. Then, I set it back to a warmer setting and the fan switches back to normal speed. The compressor is still operating at the end of the video.

Trivia and Jane replace a thermostat on a hot water heater.

Of course, as it turns out, the problem is not with the thermostat, but with the actual electrical breaker switch in the main electrical box.

None of the Troubleshooting Guides I looked at suggested Main Breaker Panel Failure as a likely culprit in a water heater not working.

The question now is: is the issue with the breaker itself, which looks worn and water damaged, or with the entire electrical panel, which looks worn and water damaged?

It's supposed to be 90's here in the Portland the next few days, maybe even touch 100. Don't get me wrong, I look forward to summer as much as any other season here in the PNW, but those kind of temps are a little warm for me.

For what is often described as "one of the worst winters" around these parts, I did come away with some nice images. Including this one from a rare snow storm that hit Portland. With unplowed streets filled with snowshoers and cross country skiers, we threw on the four-wheel drive and headed to St. Johns. People were sledding, tubing and tromping around under the bridge having all sorts of fun.

I had just lined up this shot of a snow bent tree and the iconic arches when two ladies and their pup strolled through. All bundled up, I couldn't tell that they were actually friends of ours we were hanging out with the previous night. We chatted about snow day off work, the incredible snow, and the photo I had just made of them.

But I digress.....point is, when I am sitting in PDX this weekend sweating my you know whats off, I will be doing my best to put myself back to this day, in this spot, making this photo.

O.k. ... So my heater has been acting up for a couple weeks. Some days the thermostat won't kick it on. I fiddle with it...and eventually it comes on. Well today...nothing. I went to work, came home for lunch and realized it was out of whack. I tried to fix it to no avail. I bundled the dogs up with blankies on the couch and went back to work. Came home, it's still not working. Snoopy is in a bit of a panic when he's cold. He likes to burrow and heat up his surroundings. I had his sweater on but sometimes his little front leg gets tweaked. It's 68 degrees in the house and I usually keep it like 72-74. (I know, we're wussies! ) ; ) Everybody has their pleasure...ours at my house is being cool in the summer, and warm in the winter/spring. I pay my SMUD utility bill, so "I do what I want." They're coming tomorrow to fix the unit.

Moob: man-boob, Snoopy has one big one. hee hee

3/29/06 It's fixed! Yeah, It's rainy and cold, but we're all warm and toasty.

My thermostat seized on my car on Monday, but waited until today to fix it. This resulted in my pulling over 30 seconds from my house to let my car cool down, because it started to overheat.

Coincidentally, it happened at an area that gets incredible afternoon light. I drive by this scene every day. The light igniting the edges of the cat tails from behind. This is also the opposite side of the road of here: www.flickr.com/photos/robbie_v/6656294417/in/photostream

Makes sense now, doesn't it? Tons of light coming through and blowing up colours and contrast.

Anyways, while I waited for my car to cool, I grabbed my camera and crossed the road. I stood in the ditch, composed and waited for the sun to position itself directly behind a cat tail. After a couple missed shots, and a couple dead on shots, I eventually chose this to post. It almost does justice to the scene I see every day.
