The scientific calculator and pocket computer SHARP PC-1403H was introduced in 1986 and could be programmed in BASIC (and machine language) and had an impressive RAM of 32KB. The SHARP CE-126P thermal matrix printer for 58mm roll paper also served as an analog interface for connecting a cassette recorder for data and program storage.
Kid's toy camera that prints on thermal paper. Scanned and added contrast. Experimenting with the possibilities of this little gem.
I was looking around for a suitable test image to try out on the Citizen CBM 1000 thermal receipt printer. It has to be a pure black and white bit-map, and 432 pixels wide. I realised that one of my PCB designs, suitably scaled, would be ideal. The paper I'm using is only 58mm wide, with blue thermal ink, and at least 20 years old. It'll work even better when I have an 80mm roll of new thermal paper with black ink.
The screenless and keyboardless Raspberry Pi & thermal printer are in the kitchen - I'm connected to the Pi by SSH from a laptop upstairs... which means we can send printed orders down to the kitchen :)

It took a butchered old camera power supply and my netbook charger coincidentally died somehow in the process, and I had the paper back to front, but my thermal printer prints!
Going to be a bit of a pain to program the Arduino without my netbook, though.
another idea for a thermal printer doo-dad - as well as tweets, weather and so on - maybe a daily poem delivered to your little printer? Or a box that prints random poems on demand?
Ideas, please, for short poems or haikus!

A Citizen CBM 1000 thermal till receipt printer connected (via RS-232) to the PC. The thermal paper must be 20 years old at least; it's from a junk-box and was probably intended for use with HP calculator printers. It has blue thermal ink instead of the more usual black, and is 57mm wide. The printer can accept either 57mm or 80mm paper rolls.
UPDATE: I now have some end-of-roll paper that I got from FreeCycle; it's 80mm wide and prints black, so I'll do some more tests and photos.
